"Social media is just such a false perception of reality" - Caitlin Clark shares the secrets to staying grounded in the era of social media and fame

"Social media is just such a false perception of reality" - Caitlin Clark shares the secrets to staying grounded in the era of social media and fame originally appeared on Basketball Network. In a sports world heavily influenced by social media, professional athletes can easily get lost in what's real and what's not. With people having access to platforms where they can share their thoughts on various sports leagues, including the WNBA, players must find a way to stay grounded and not be affected by the noise. One superstar who has had to navigate this daily since her rise to stardom in the NCAA while playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes is Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. As immensely popular as she has been, especially since she entered the pros, she has been a lightning rod for both praise and criticism. In an interview on the "A Touch More" podcast with WNBA legend Sue Bird and women's football icon Megan Rapinoe, she reflected on what inspires her to keep going, even in the face of sharp criticism from pundits and, occasionally, her own peers. A false reality Social media is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, anyone can get in touch with anyone else in the world and, with a few taps on a smartphone or a keyboard, offer their thoughts and opinions to an audience. On the other hand, people feel empowered to say things they may not have the courage or opportunity to say in person; at times, these things can be hurtful or damaging to others. For Caitlin, this has become an all-too-familiar aspect of her life. With her stature as the most popular woman hooper in the world who has helped elevate the WNBA to new heights since joining the league last year, she receives both praise and criticism on a daily basis. While the praise gives her motivation and drive to continue excelling on the court, the criticism can be taxing. However, she never dwells on such things, reminding herself that the social media world is just that — another world. "You have to remember, like, social media is just such a false perception of reality," Caitlin surmised. "And even for myself, you don't always realize that at times, that it's not the real world." The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year said what helps keep her feet firmly on the ground is what she sees before her when she arrives at the arena. "When you're in a position where people are going to love you and people aren't going to like you, showing up to arenas really reminds me how many people are actually there supporting and loving you," Caitlin shared. "Like, the little boys and little girls — those aren't the people on social media caring about every decision you make or every comment you post." Caitlin tries to be as authentic as possible By now, Caitlin has gotten used to all the attention she receives in the real and digital world. She understands that in this day and age, everyone has a platform to shout their opinions, whether good or bad. But she chooses to focus on the positive and stay true to herself. "I just try to show up every single day and be myself. I approach it that way — just being authentically me," she humbly declared. "Whether that means answering hard questions or facing hard moments, I just try to take it as it goes." Above all, she understands the significance of the position she's earned — a role she has tirelessly worked for, and one that many women in basketball aspire to achieve. "I always try to remind myself how lucky I am to be here and to be in this position. There are so many people who would kill to be in my shoes," Caitlin expressed. "Yeah, there are going to be hard moments. But at the same time, there have been a lot of really good moments, too. So, that's what I try to remind myself, honestly." This season has been a mixed bag for Caitlin as she has endured numerous injuries, including a hamstring strain that kept her out of the WNBA All-Star Game last Saturday. However, with the Fever's stretch run starting on Tuesday, she's determined to push through and help her team improve on their first-round exit last story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 22, 2025, where it first appeared.

The StudBudz WNBA livestream had everything from Megan Rapinoe talking strap-ons to dissing Diplo

The WNBA has been gaining popularity every day, but the All Stars weekend might go down in history as the most viral moment the league has ever had, thanks to the StudBudz , now-infamous livestream. It was wild, chaotic, and extremely sapphic. There were dozens of viral moments that came out of the 72-hour-long livestream, but one that fans will likely never forget featured legendary sports couple Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird talking about strapping. Bet you didn't think you'd see that on your 2025 bingo card. WNBA players from teams across the country gather in Indianapolis for the All-Star Game, Skills Challenge, and 3-point contest, and while the talent on display was impressive, fans we're also glued to a 72-hour-straight livestream by the StudBudz, a Twitch channel hosted by Lynx teammates, besties, and certified studs Courtney Williams and Natisha 'T' Heideman. Not only did the livestream confirm some women's basketball dating conspiracy theories, but while Rapinoe and Bird were at the All-Stars weekend to film a live show for their sports podcast, A Touch More, they had a very lesbian moment with the StudBudz that has since gone viral. 'We have to address the best moment on StudBudz. Never? Never strapped,' Rapinoe asked Williams. Ex-ESPN host blasts Shane Gillis for jokes about female athletes in ESPYs monologue

Shane Gillis 'didn't even try to make clever jokes about women athletes' during his viral ESPYs monologue, former ESPN personality Sarah Spain has fumed. Gillis, 37, was tasked with hosting ESPN's annual sports awards ceremony on Wednesday night, giving him the opportunity to mock a number of sports stars, some of whom were in attendance at Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Among the comedian's victims were Shedeur Sanders, Aaron Rodgers, Bill Belichick, Jake Paul and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, while he also ventured outside of sports by making jokes about Donald Trump and disgraced late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. He also trolled a number of women on the night; taking aim at the likes of Megan Rapinoe, Simone Biles, Caitlin Clark and the WNBA as a whole. 'Megan Rapinoe could not make it tonight... nice,' Gillis said about the former USWNT soccer captain before adding . 'No? We're gonna pretend she's a good time? Alright.' The actor and comic also mocked 4ft 8in Olympic gymnast Biles over her height and the WNBA over its lesser-known players while saying about Clark: 'When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she's going to work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist fighting Black women.' In a year of crazy growth for women's sports choosing an ESPYs host who doesn't even try to make clever jokes about women athletes (he at least *attempted* for the men) he goes with hacky "no one knows the WNBA" bits, "Pinoe is a bad time" & repeatedly insults Black women. COOL. — Sarah Spain (@SarahSpain) July 17, 2025 Yet those gags did not go down well with Spain, who has ripped into Gillis for his 'hacky' punchlines about female sports stars. The sports reported wrote on X: 'In a year of crazy growth for women's sports choosing an ESPYs host who doesn't even try to make clever jokes about women athletes (he at least *attempted* for the men) he goes with hacky "no one knows the WNBA" bits, "Pinoe is a bad time" & repeatedly insults Black women. COOL.' Gillis had mixed success with his jokes on the night after some drew huge laughter from the crowd and others failed to land. His brutal dig at legendary NFL coach Belichick, 73, and his 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson sparked one of the loudest reactions from the audience after he first began a joke about MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani. 'Shohei is a once in a generation talent. No one's been able to do what he's done at so many positions - pitcher, hitter, and bookie,' Gillis said, referring to Ohtani's former interpreter's $17million betting scandal. He then set his sights firmly on Belichick and Hudson. '"Bookie" is what Bill Belichick reads to his girlfriend before bedtime,' he continued, to rapturous laughter. 'They do the "Very horny caterpillar," "The little engine that could but needed a pill first," and of course, "Good night boobs." That's my favorite one.' 'Not trashing Bill Belichick,' Gillis went on. 'He is 73 years old and dating a hot 24-year-old. People are criticizing him. What happened to this country? We used to be a great country. 'He won six Super Bowls. He is dating a hot 24-year-old. Maybe if you guys won six Super Bowls you wouldn't be sitting next to a fat ugly dog wife.' He then slightly backtracked as that harsh quip drew a stunned reaction from the crowd. 'They let me do it. This is Disney. They allowed that... Yeah, we should've taken that out,' Gillis said. 'I had doubts going into that. That didn't work all week.'

Congratulations Are Pouring In For WNBA Legend Sue Bird

Congratulations Are Pouring In For WNBA Legend Sue Bird originally appeared on The Spun. Sue Bird's playing days are long gone, but she's dominating the headlines in the WNBA this Wednesday. Bird spent her entire WNBA career with the Seattle Storm, averaging 11.7 points and 5.6 assists per game. She was a 13-time All-Star, four-time WNBA champion and three-time assists leader. The UConn legend was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame this year. Advertisement With that said, Seattle will honor Bird on Aug. 17 with her very own statue outside Climate Pledge Arena. That day has been dubbed the "Forever Sue" game. "For over two decades, the city of Seattle supported me, both on and off the court," Bird said in a statement. "It's because of this community that Seattle will forever hold a special place in my heart. This statue isn't just for me, it's for anyone out there hoping to one day pursue their passions and live out their dreams. I'm thankful to the Storm and Seattle for this honor, and can't wait to celebrate with my family, friends and our amazing fans in August." Advertisement "The Storm is the first franchise in the W to dedicate a statue to a former player, well done," Niko Tamurian of KOMO News said. "We cannot wait. So deserving. Congrats Sue," one fan wrote. "So deserving! Go Sue," an Instagram user wrote. "She deserves this," another fan commented. Tickets for the Storm's game on Aug. 17 are already available. Hopefully, there'll be a packed crowd in attendance. Regardless, Bird deserves a standing ovation from the fans in Seattle.
