Russell Wilson has received rave reviews since setting foot on the field for the New York Giants. Still, that doesn't erase the fact that there is a first-round rookie waiting in the wings.
Jaxson Dart was drafted early enough for the Giants to be eager to get him out on the field. He's the quarterback of the future, and everybody knows it.
Since the Giants have the mentality of a contender, they don't seem interested in getting Dart on the field so soon. They signed Russell Wilson to take advantage of the 36-year-old's experience, but the NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah isn't buying the idea that Wilson will be a full-time starter in 2025.
"Everything I've read about Dart seems to be pretty positive," Jeremiah said during his appearance on the Rich Eisen Show. "I think he's got a chance to play pretty darn early here. We'll see how it goes."
In order for Dart to get on the field as early as Week 1, a lot would have to happen. The rookie would need to look like a seasoned veteran, while Wilson would have to struggle. So far, both quarterbacks have earned praise for having a strong offseason. As a result, Dart reportedly began to jump ahead of Jameis Winston on the depth chart.

Leapfrogging Wilson won't be as easy, but Jeremiah believes that putting the redshirt on Dart doesn't seem like a sure path for New York, even after Wilson's praise-worthy spring.

"We'll see how it goes. You just kind of listen to the words of Brian Daboll, and you get the sense that [Dart] was his guy. He's invested in him. He seems to really, really like him. He had Josh Allen, and once they got him in there, they were able to learn through some of the mistakes and get to a really good place. It sounds a little different, the way he's talking about [Dart]."
Whether the Giants had Dart or not, Wilson was sure to have a lot of doubters in front of him when he signed this offseason. While Wilson is one of the most recognizable active players at the quarterback position, he's struggled to live up to his Seattle Seahawks playing days.

During his final season with the Denver Broncos, Wilson achieved a 7-8 record, throwing for 3,070 yards, 16 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Last year, he went 6-5 as the starter of the Pittsburgh Steelers, tossing 16 touchdowns and five interceptions, while tossing for over 2,400 yards in the air.
Only time will tell if Jeremiah's prediction is correct, but one thing is for sure: Wilson would have to thrive in order to keep fans from pounding the table for Dart to start.

Giants Firing Coach Brian Daboll Could Be Up To Jaxson Dart Development
Giants Firing Coach Brian Daboll Could Be Up To Jaxson Dart Development originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Giants had a less-than-stellar season in 2024, finish dead last in the NFC East with a 3-14 record. As a result, head coach Brian Daboll is thought by many to be on the hot seat. Advertisement In a recent article by Gilberto Manzano, he lists some of the biggest winners and losers so far this offseason. For one of his winners, he has the Giants, who he thinks improved enough that Daboll could be in a position to prove the doubters wrong in 2025. "After failing to make it work with Daniel Jones, a quarterback Daboll inherited, this coaching staff will get to develop first-round selection Jaxson Dart, who will start training camp behind Russell Wilson," Manzano wrote. "If Dart shows flashes like Maye did last season with a bad team, that might be enough to keep Daboll around for another season." Or ... if he doesn't? That could determine whether Daboll moves from the hot seat to getting fired. Daboll was named the NFL Coach of the Year in first season with the team in 2022, where he led not the best Giants roster to the NFC Divisional round. They have not made it to the playoffs since then, but not all of it is necessarily Daboll's fault. Advertisement Daniel Jones clearly did not work out at quarterback, but Daboll was not responsible for drafting him. He is, however, responsible for helping draft Malik Nabers, who was one of the best wide receivers in the league in his rookie season. With all of the improvements the team has made around stars like Nabers and Dexter Lawrence II on the defensive side, Daboll will be looking to prove that he should not go anywhere. Giants Trade To Break Up D-Line Urged As Final Offseason Move
Giants Trade To Break Up D-Line Urged As Final Offseason Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Giants used their No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to land premier pass-rushing prospect Abdul Carter from Penn State. Carter rounds out what could be one of the most imposing defensive lines in football alongside Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Advertisement That is ... if that foursome is still together by the time Week 1 rolls around. Thibodeaux has been mentioned in trade rumors for the last couple years, and ESPN believes the Giants should follow through with that idea by trading him to a team in more need of an edge rusher. The Giants' D-line would still be solid minus their 2022 first-round pick, and draft capital in return could help the team's efforts to acquire more youth on offense for a future featuring rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart and star receiver Malik Nabers. "Thibodeaux has two years left on his rookie contract, and he'll need an extension after the 2025 season," Aaron Schatz says. "The team won't want to pay him at the going price for starting edge rushers if he's not going to be starting." Advertisement New York is stuck in a surplus with three starting-caliber edges but just two spots available. That four-man lineup could be used with Thibodeaux sliding inside to form an athletic NASCAR package, but he's most comfortable as a defensive end. Schatz believes a team like the Green Bay Packers or Detroit Lions could be willing to exchange a Day 2 draft pick for Thibodeaux and his pass-rushing prowess. Thibodeaux saw a major drop off in sack totals last year, falling from 11.5 in 2023 to just 5.5 in 2024, however, he did play five less games. Their play on the field will fully dictate future moves, but as it stands now, the Giants' offense needs more work than the defense. Another reliable pass-catcher to put opposite of Nabers should be the team's top target in future drafts or in a trade this year. A Thibodeaux trade could be the medium in which that gets done. Advertisement The defensive line is in an embarrassment of riches situation, and getting rid of Thibodeaux could benefit multiple future plans without sacrificing a major loss in pass-rush depth.
