Man gets 14 months' jail for housebreaking in Sibu
Magistrate Oon Kork Chern handed down the sentence on Simon Brown, who resides at the Mile 14 army camp along Jalan Oya, after he pleaded guilty to an amended charge under Section 457 of the Penal Code.
The offence was committed at around 2.28am on June 9 at a house located at Lorong Kemuyang 5F.
According to the facts of the case, the complainant returned home at around 6pm on the same day and found that the gate between her unit and her neighbour's had been cut and a window had been unlocked.
Upon further inspection, she discovered one of the rooms had been ransacked, and a laptop and three smartphones were missing. The total loss was estimated at RM3,700.
Police arrested the accused the same day and seized a laptop and three smartphones in his possession.
Investigations revealed that he was captured on close-circuit television (CCTV) footage around the house of the complainant's neighbour.
The complainant was also able to positively identify her laptop and one of the stolen smartphones among the seized items.
Prosecution was conducted by ASP Siti Mariyah Dahari while the accused was not represented by legal counsel.

Teacher killed by relative with history of mental illness
TUARAN: A teacher was found dead, believed to have been murdered by a close relative who reportedly suffers from mental health issues. The incident happened at an unnumbered house in Tenghilan here yesterday. The body of 41-year-old Celesty Christy Celestina Sili was discovered lying at the back of her family home. District police chief Superintendent Noraidin Ag Maidin said a team from the district police headquarters arrested the suspect on the same day. Freelance preacher dupes two women of RM140,000 in religious school scam
KUALA LUMPUR: Two women lost a total of RM140,000 after they were deceived by a freelance preacher into contributing to the development of a religious school in Selangor. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the state Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) received reports from the two women, both in their 40s and owners of a company. Initial investigations revealed that the victims had become acquainted with the suspect, a local man in his 30s who was known to them as a freelance preacher in 2020, he said. "The suspect deceived the victims by claiming the money was for the development of a religious school, believed to be located in Selangor. "The first victim made three money transfers amounting to RM60,000 between August and September 2020, while the second victim made a payment of RM80,000 in 2019," he said in a statement today. Hussein said the suspect's modus operandi involved using the name of a religious institution to gain the victims' trust, ultimately convincing them to hand over funds for the school's development. He added that two investigation papers have been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. "Police would like to remind the public to always be cautious of donation or investment requests that cannot be properly verified, especially those involving religious or educational institutions.
