Johor immigration sweep nets 35 undocumented migrants
JOHOR BARU: The Johor Immigration Department detained 35 foreigners in a series of raids on business premises here on Tuesday. The multi-pronged operation, codenamed Op Minyak, Op Kutip, Op Selera, Op Belanja and Op Jaja, were carried out following public tip-offs on undocumented workers. State Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the detainees, aged between 18 and 55, included 29 men and six women from Indonesia (14), Myanmar (8), Bangladesh (6), Pakistan (3), Thailand (2), India (1) and Afghanistan (1). "They had committed various immigration offences including entering and staying in the country without valid documents, overstaying expired permits, and abusing social visit passes," he said today. Five Malaysians business owners were issued with notices to assist investigations for harbouring the illegal foreigners. The detainees were placed at the Setia Tropika Immigration Detention Depot for processing. Rusdi urged the public to keep reporting suspicious activities involving illegal immigrants. "Enforcement will be ramped up to weed out those flouting immigration laws. "There will be no compromise. We are committed to cracking down on undocumented migrants and employers who exploit them," he said.

Two men jump from second floor in failed bid to escape immigration raid
KUALA LUMPUR: Two men jumped from the second floor of a shophouse in an attempt to evade arrest, while others faked unconsciousness during an Immigration Department raid here last night. Kuala Lumpur Immigration director Wan Mohammed Saupee Wan Yusoff said their tactics proved futile as 60 immigrants were rounded up in the operation. One of the two Bangladeshis who leapt from the building pretended to have broken his leg, while others claimed to have applied for a card from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), he said. He said 28 officers were involved in the "Op Selera" and "Op Kutip" operations from 10pm to 2am, at a food court and two shophouses. "A total of 137 individuals were screened, and 60 were detained, comprising 17 Indonesian men, 20 Indonesian women, 18 Myanmar men, one Myanmar woman, three Bangladeshi men and one Pakistani man. "In the first raid at a food court on Jalan Cheras, 16 foreigners were detained; 30 in the second raid in Pudu; and 14 in the final raid at a shophouse on Jalan Raja Laut in Chow Kit," he added. All the suspects were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Depot for further action under Section 6(1)(c) or Section 15(1)(c).
