DeMarvion Overshown provides positive medical update

Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown tore the ACL, MCL and PCL in his right knee in Week 14, which put his entire 2025 season in jeopardy. Overshown always has had a positive outlook, and it appears the medical staff has given him a positive update. 'Good news from the Doc! We getting active THIS szn,' Overshown wrote on Instagram. It remains to be seen when that will be. Overshown will start training camp on active/physically unable to perform and likely will move to reserve/PUP before the season as he continues his rehab into the season. He tore the ACL in his left knee in the preseason before his rookie season in 2023, missing the season. In 13 games last season, Overshown totaled 90 tackles, an interception, five sacks, four passes defensed and a forced fumble.

NFL execs love elite 3rd-year Cowboy with just 13 games played, makes ESPN Top 10

The Dallas Cowboys' class of 2023 is not a lost cause; not totally. The best draft pick just hasn't been able to find a way to stay on the field. When the club selected Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, it had high hopes and a ton of question marks. Overshown had converted from safety to linebacker at Austin, translating his solid positional speed into elite. The requisite questions about being able to disengage blockers, read plays and handle the wear and tear followed, as they should for a secondary player moving to the front seven. And it's the last concern that has reared its head the most, keeping him from reaching his heights, heights that apparently the entire league is well aware of. Despite losing his rookie season to an ACL, and the last third of his second to another, Overshown appears in the top 10 of the ESPN-led poll of NFL executives for linebackers in 2025. Overshown, despite likely being out until Halloween and implied concerns about just how much he'll be back to normal this coming season, was ranked No. 8 overall. Highest ranking: 4 | Lowest ranking: UnrankedAge: 24 | Last year's ranking: not eligible (rookie) Overshown needed only 12 NFL games to convince a healthy number of voters that he's a high-impact linebacker. "He's absolutely amazing," a personnel exec with an NFL team said. "Ridiculous." "One of the most athletic linebackers I've ever seen," a veteran NFL defensive coach said. "He's the fastest guy out there. Can completely take over a game and was really starting to get it." Added an NFC offensive coach: "He's the second guy you worry about in Dallas, after Micah [Parsons]. Big run-and-hit ability, third-down speed to cover." All that praise comes with a caveat: significant injury concerns. Overshown sat out his rookie season in 2023 because of an ACL tear in his left knee, then sustained a severe injury to his right knee in December 2024, tearing three ligaments (ACL, MCL, PCL). He plans to return at some point in the 2025 season, and that's also Dallas' hope. Multiple voters have serious concerns about whether Overshown can maintain a consistent NFL career because of the damage already done. But his body of work in less than a full NFL season was strong: 90 tackles, 5 sacks, 4 pass deflections, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery. He led the top 10 in average distance run on tackles (18.9 yards). "He can be a stud but has to really improve in zone coverage and when he has to disengage from a block," a veteran NFL defensive coach said. "He can play man-to-man on any RB or TE in the league but zone awareness lacks. He does a great job using his athleticism to slip under blocks but if they get hands on him, it's a problem." The Cowboys have waited a long time for an impact linebacker like Overshown, but fans know they've tried. They spent their 2017 second-round pick on Jaylon Smith, and their 2018 first rounder on Leighton Vander Esch. Both came with injury concerns that bore out in their shortened pro careers. Overshown didn't have those concerns, was drafted in the perfect place to land a linebacker and still the injuries have become an issue. Returning a year after an ACL to play at the level he did offers some hope he can do it again, once he's able to return to the field. The league is certainly aware how much his presence can help the Dallas defense, and that's before the thoughts of new defensive coordinator, noted linebacker-whisperer Matt Eberflus, gets his hands on him.

Did Cowboys waste $7.5 million in acquiring this former 1st-round pick?

Paper is not reality. During the spring and summer months, fans are able to look upon each of their team's offseason moves with optimism. The upside of a player is first and foremost, because the idea of his new coaching staff getting the most out of his talent is the goal. The guy who doesn't play to his potential until in the right environment is a story as old as free agency and the trade market. But oftentimes, the player is who he is, and another man's trash being the new team's treasure never materializes. Dallas hopes this isn't the case for linebacker Kenneth Murray, who will be the best-paid player in his position group heading into 2025. The Cowboys decided to take the financial cost on, hoping Murray's first-round pedigree will shine in the hands of noted linebacker-whisperer Matt Eberflus, the club's new defensive coordinator. The Cowboys had the cap space and the cash to spare, so the gamble seems worth the risk. Rundown Position: Linebacker Age: 26 Height: 6-foot-2 Weight: 241 pounds Hometown: Missouri City, TX High School: Elkins College: Oklahoma (Highlights) Draft: 2020 First-round pick (No. 23 Overall) Acquired: 2025 Trade Contract: Two-year contract (2024), $15.5 million 2025 Base Salary: $5.99 million | Cap Hit: $7.41 million Career Earnings: $20.9 million (per Over The Cap) Profile The Cowboys already have a star linebacker; DeMarvion Overshown just can't stay on the field. The former Texas Longhorn is a heat-seeking missle, capable of sideline-to-sideline pursuit and rushing the QB. But with his 2025 debut date up in the air due to a second ACL injury, the club had to bring in some help. Along with Overshown's injury, the team's leading 2024 tackler Eric Kendricks was seen as a perfect fit for Mike Zimmer's group, but apparently wasn't of interest to Eberflus. Dallas swapped inconsequential Day 3 picks with Tennessee to bring in Murray, who played just one season for the Titans. The cost was more financial, as he's set to count $7.4 million against Dallas' 2025 cap due to $6 million in base salary and $1.5 million in bonus money. Dallas also signed LB Jack Sanborn as a free agent, and there's a strong possibility he is given the authority of starting middle linebacker that will allow Murray to be in more a outside backer role. The Cowboys do have some young talent at the position in second-year pro Marist Liafau and fourth-year player Damone Clark. Liafau showed relatively well in spurts as a rookie, and could be surprise competition for Murray's snaps. And if Overshown shows his remarkable recovery abilities yet again, Murray might really need to step up his game to not be a liability on the field. His play diagnosis is the biggest knock on him, so that will more likely be the area of emphasis for his new coaching staff to improve on. 'We at War?': Cowboys linebacker Demarvion Overshown leaves fans guessing with vague social media post about Donald Trump

Cowboys' DeMarvion Overshown raises question after Donald Trump announces U.S. airstrike on Iran (Getty Images) Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown left fans puzzled after posting a vague message on social media Sunday night. With no context or follow-up, the unexpected post quickly gained traction, fueling speculation across the NFL community. As Overshown continues his recovery from back-to-back knee injuries, his sudden shift in online tone raised more questions than answers about his mindset off the field. NFL fans puzzled by Demarvion Overshown's cryptic message on social media Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown has recently captivated attention for two distinct reasons: an unexpected comment from the public on international affairs and his ongoing struggle with significant knee injuries. In an unexpected turn of events, Overshown weighed in on global events after President Donald Trump confirmed US airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. Taking to social media, the linebacker directly inquired the situation, simply asking, "We at War?" This public query from a professional athlete transiently shifted focus from the sports world to the complexities of international affairs, even as Vice President J.D. Vance clarified that the military action was aimed at Iran's nuclear capabilities rather than a broader conflict with the nation itself. On the field, Overshown has encountered immense physical challenges. His rookie year in 2023 was cut short by a torn ACL, and unfortunately, he went through another season-ending knee injury in Week 14 of the 2024 season. These setbacks are particularly disheartening given that he was enjoying a standout year, having expanded an impressive 90 tackles, five sacks, and a pick-six in just 13 games prior to the latest injury. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brass Krishna Idols For Prosperity & Protection In Life Luxeartisanship Shop Now Undo Despite these formidable obstacles, Overshown has shown astonishing resolve, publicly setting his eyes on a Thanksgiving 2025 return to competitive play. He is reportedly collaborating closely with the Cowboys' rehabilitation specialist, Britt Brown, who has conceived a detailed recovery regimen. Overshown himself has expressed optimism about his progress, noting that his rehabilitation "couldn't be any better. " Overshown's recurring injury issues, however, place the Cowboys in a tough spot regarding his contract, which currently runs until 2026. The team faces a significant decision: should they offer an early extension, betting on his considerable potential, or should they hold off, given that he's suffered two major knee injuries in three years? Their history with similar situations, like those involving Jaylon Smith and Terence Steele, has been a miscellanea, offering no specific blueprint. This would put the Cowboys in a tricky position, potentially forcing them to bid higher than other teams to keep him on the roster. Kenneth Murray calls Matt Eberflus' defense "a great fit" for him

Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown said he's where he needs to be in his rehab. But Overshown, who tore the ACL, MCL and PCL in his right knee in Week 14, will miss most, if not all, of the 2025 season. The Cowboys covered themselves by trading for Titans linebacker Kenneth Murray, a first-round pick of the Chargers in 2020. Murray is working at Overshown's weakside linebacker spot in new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus' scheme. 'I think it's a great fit,' Murray said, via Clarence Hill of All City DLLS. 'I've been enjoying myself, obviously transitioning over from being traded and getting up to speed and stuff like that. Lot of things work to my strengths, coming down hill, playing the coverage, stuff like that. It's been good. It's been great being here during the offseason program, getting around the guys and just trying to come in and establish a culture and get better every day.' The Cowboys have Murray making the defensive calls over middle linebacker Jack Sanborn, who followed Eberflus from Chicago. 'I'm extremely comfortable with it,' Murray said of being the green dot. 'I've done it the majority of my career, getting us in and out of checks, being able to decipher different things, different formation, stuff like that.' Murray vows to help the Cowboys shore up their run defense. They have not ranked in the top-10 in run defense since 2018 under defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli. In the past five seasons, the Cowboys have not ranked higher than 16th in run defense, including 29th last season. 'I think it's just taking a different approach,' Murray said. 'Obviously, it's a new style coming in, and then, you know, got some new players. That's something that I'll take extremely personally. That that's mentality I'm gonna bring to it. It's personal, man. When they just running it down your throat, it's unacceptable.' Murray had 95 tackles and a career-high 3.5 sacks with Tennessee last season when he started 14 games.
