‘From 26 million passengers to 45 million annually': Kolkata Airport's old domestic terminal to be demolished for new international facility
Officials said this expansion will help future-proof the airport against rising passenger demand in the coming decades and strengthen its position as a major aviation hub in eastern India.
'The current integrated terminal, spread over 222,973 square metres, is a workhorse, presently handling 8,460 peak-hour passengers — 5,500 domestic and 2,960 international. With an annual passenger capacity of 26 million (2.6 crore), this is expected to reach saturation by 2025–26,' said Dr Pravat Ranjan Beuria, Airport Director, NSCBI Airport.
Demolition of the old domestic terminal is expected to be completed by the end of this year or early next year. In its place, a new U-shaped terminal will come up, initially meant exclusively for international operations. Once operational, the new international terminal will add capacity for 2 million passengers annually.
To address growing passenger traffic in the interim, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has also planned an expansion of the existing terminal's international areas. The departure section will be expanded by 3,000 sq m, and the arrival section by 2,600 sq m. This 71,000 sq ft modular addition will increase total capacity from 26 million to 28 million passengers per annum (2.8 crore), with completion targeted for the end of this year.
Sources at the airport said that after the new international terminal becomes operational, the existing integrated terminal, 222,973 sq m in size, will be converted for exclusive domestic use with a revised handling capacity of 34 million passengers annually.
The old domestic terminal, built in 1995 with a capacity of 5 million passengers annually and a built-up area of 2.4 lakh sq ft, has remained unused for regular operations since the current integrated terminal opened in 2013. However, the building continued to serve key functions. During the pandemic, it housed a quarantine facility and later operated an RT-PCR testing centre for international travellers (2020–22). It has also been used for Haj flight operations.
'Upon full completion of these projects, NSCBI Airport's total annual passenger handling capacity — combining both the converted domestic terminal and the new international terminal — is projected to reach 45 million. Of this, 36 million will be for domestic passengers and 9 million for international,' an airport official said.

Epoxy flooring facelift for airport
1 2 3 4 Kolkata: Kolkata airport on Thursday unveiled a glitzy epoxy flooring near gate 25 at the northern-end of the departure terminal's security hold area (SHA), replacing the dull, worn-out dark grey and blue carpets with a white, yellow, and grey floor that added a dash of cheer to the terminal's look and feel. Over the next few months, carpets at the other boarding gates will be removed, and the epoxy flooring will be extended to the other end of the SHA. The cost of the floor facelift is Rs 7 crore. The carpets are now laid across 43,000 sq ft of floor near boarding gates that lead to 18 aerobridges in the facility. In use since the terminal's launch on Jan 23, 2013, the carpets long outlived their utility and were in crying need of an upgrade. Nearly 10 crore flyers who took flights out of the airport in past 11 years walked over this carpeted section, causing them to get frayed. They also gathered dust and stains from constant use. "It has not only enhanced aesthetics of the terminal, it will be more durable, easy to maintain, chemical resistant and cost-effective," said airport director Pravat Ranjan Beuria. Flying out of Delhi Airport? Here's when full-body scanners will be in use
Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has expanded trials of its full-body scanners to include passengers as well, sources said. Originally scheduled to begin in May, the trials started on June 16 and have now been underway for over a month. 'Initially, only airport staff were part of the trials. Now, passengers have also been included,' a source said. The trials will go on for three to four months, after which 'a Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS)-led committee will evaluate the findings and establish a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) for full-scale implementation,' according to an earlier press statement by airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). The airport operator had procured four scanners, with two installed at Terminal 1, and another two set up at Terminal 3. These scanners are designed to improve security while expediting passenger movement. It can detect both metallic as well as non-metallic threats, including explosives. 'To address privacy concerns, the scanners generate a standardised 2D image on a preset human avatar, ensuring no personal images are stored. They are equipped with four touchscreen monitors for image evaluation and passenger guidance, and can scan individuals between 3.3 ft to 6.7 ft in height,' the press statement had stated. Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, DIAL CEO, had earlier said, 'The Delhi Airport remains committed to deploying the latest technology to enhance security while ensuring a seamless passenger experience. The introduction of these body scanners is a game-changer in security screening, allowing for faster and more effective checks without compromising privacy.' Each scan takes approximately three seconds, with a maximum capacity of 1,200 scans per hour. The scanners will use millimeter-wave technology operating between 70 to 80 GHz, DIAL had said. Unlike conventional X-ray scanners, they do not emit radiation, making them safe for all travellers, including pregnant women and those with medical implants.
