Oppn intensifies protests seeking Veena's resignation
T'puram/Kottayam The Congress-led opposition intensified the protests against health minister Veena George following the death of a woman in the building collapse at Kottayam Medical College Hospital. Youth Congress, KSU, Mahila Congress and Youth League organized protests across the state, including Palakkad, Kochi, Kollam, Kannur and Mananthavady, seeking the resignation of the health minister. In the state capital, Youth Congress organized a protest march to the official residence of the health minister, Thycaud House. The march resulted in a face off between the protesters and police for hours as the YC workers refused to disperse even after repeated use of water cannons by police. The YC activists tried to climb the walls of the health minister's residence. However, police, who were present in large numbers, managed to prevent them from entering the building. Police used water cannons several times against their attempt to breach the barricades. Police later arrested and removed the protesters from the scene. The face-off lasted for hours on the busy Thycaud-Vazhuthacaud road. Clashes also occurred during a Congress march to the Sasthamkotta taluk hospital in Kollam, demanding the health minister's resignation, injuring the block president and others. In Palakkad, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, while launching a protest by the Mahila Congress, said that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan ought to have sought the health minister's resignation before going abroad in view of her alleged "inefficiency", "indifference" and "grave mistakes". In Pathanamthitta, Youth Congress and BJP continued their protests. Protest marches were taken out to the residence of the minister at Kumbazha and Angadickal as well as the DMO office and General Hospital. YC workers protested over the dilapidated condition of the E Block at the General Hospital. They staged a symbolic protest by placing pillars to support the walls.

PILs seeking compensation in Sprinklr case: HC seeks State's explanation
The Kerala High Court has sought the State government's explanation within two weeks, on public interest litigations (PILs) filed in 2020 by Congress leader and former Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala and former BJP State president K. Surendran, seeking compensation to COVID-affected people and those under observation whose medical data was allegedly 'leaked' in the Sprinklr case. They had further alleged that there was corruption in the contract that had been inked with Sprinklr, a U.S.-based firm. The government had then contended that the PILs had little relevance, since the period of contract with the firm had expired. The court had subsequently sought amendments to the demands if any in the PILs. Subsequently, the petitioners sought details of people who were affected by the data leak and the payment of compensation for them. The firm had in May 2020 submitted an affidavit before the High Court, stating that the back up data of COVID patients and those who were under observation that was stored in the server of the data analytical firm, had been permanently deleted. In July 2022, Congress leader Jyothikumar Chamakkala had filed a petition before the High Court, demanding that the government clarify the legal status of the agreement with the firm and whether it had facilitated the sale of data for a price.

Central, State governments aligning with corporate interests, sidelining workers: Ramesh Chennithala
The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) will lead strong protest movements against the Central and State governments that are aligning with corporate interests and sidelining workers, said senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala. Speaking at the inauguration of the INTUC Thrissur district leadership conference held at the Regional Theatre here on Sunday Mr. Chennithala criticised both governments for trampling labour laws and neglecting the rights of the working class. He particularly condemned the Pinarayi-led State government for reducing the number of workdays and failing to ensure minimum wages for labourers. Mr. Chennithala emphasised that a strong response would be mobilised by rallying public support against such anti-worker measures. The meeting was presided over by INTUC district president Sundaran Kunnathulli. INTUC State president R. Chandrasekharan delivered the keynote address.
