The Congress party slammed BJP MP Kangana Ranaut and said her comments on the flood situation in Himachal Pradesh were "insensitive". The Congress party on Sunday slammed BJP Lok Sabha MP from Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, after she paid a visit to her rain-ravaged constituency and said that she does not have any official Cabinet to provide disaster relief. Terming the remarks by the actor-politician 'insensitive", the Congress opined that Kangana should show sensitivity to the situation in Himachal Pradesh and those affected by floods and landslides. In an X post, the Congress shared a byte by Kangana and wrote, 'In Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, a cloudburst has caused massive destruction. People are distressed, their everything has been ruined." 'Mandi's MP Kangana arrived there after several days and, laughing, said- 'What can I do, I don't have a cabinet position'. 'The relief and restoration works have to be done by the state government, and as an MP, I can only apprise the Prime Minister and the Home Minister about the situation and seek liberal assistance," Ranaut told reporters. 'We are the link between the state and the central government, instrumental in getting projects from the centre to the state and raising issues and grievances of our constituencies with the centre," she said. 'How the state government is functioning, I can say that Congress will not come to power in the state for the next 20 years," she added. Earlier, in an X post, Kangana wrote, 'It is heartbreaking to see massive flood devastation in Himachal almost every year now. I tried reaching the flood-affected areas in Seraj and other areas in Mandi, but was advised by the respected Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur to wait until the connectivity to the affected areas is restored." Kangana took stock of the situation in Mandi on Sunday and asserted that the way relief work is being undertaken, the Congress will not return to power in the state in even 20 years. She also said that as an MP, she could only apprise the prime minister of the situation. 'I am deeply pained to see the plight of the people. They have lost family members, houses have been washed away, several people are still missing, but we can only console the families who have lost their kin, and now it is time to provide relief." RAIN WREAKS HAVOC IN HIMACHAL Fourteen people have died, and a search is on for 31 missing, as cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides caused massive destruction. More than 150 houses, 106 cattle sheds, 31 vehicles, 14 bridges, and several roads suffered damage in the disaster. A total of 164 cattle have perished. About 200 roads have been rendered out of bounds for traffic, while 236 transformers and 278 supply schemes have been disrupted in Mandi district as of Sunday morning, according to the state emergency operation centre.

Fare hike report: Tejasvi moves Karnataka High Court against BMRCL
BENGALURU: Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has moved the Karnataka High Court against the state government and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), accusing them of 'suppressing' the Metro Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) report that recommended a significant fare increase. Surya stated on Sunday that his writ petition is scheduled for hearing on Monday. Calling the government's actions 'arbitrary and opaque', Surya questioned the decision to keep the FFC report confidential. He criticised the committee for making broad recommendations and going on international study tours funded by taxpayers, while failing to ensure transparency. 'Every other Metro system in the country, including Delhi, has made its FFC reports public. Why is Bengaluru the exception? What is the government trying to hide?' he asked. He also noted that the fare hike has led to a significant drop in ridership, pushing Namma Metro into the ranks of the most expensive public transport systems in India. 'This fare structure is unaffordable for many middle-class commuters,' Surya stated. Taking a direct swipe at the Congress-led state government, the BJP MP demanded to know why Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is withholding the report despite no legal or security-related reasons for doing so. 'Public transport must be affordable, reliable, and above all accountable to the public, who fund and use it,' Surya said. He described his legal move as a battle for transparency and fairness in governance. 'I will not rest until Namma Bengaluru becomes a model in public transport for all of India,' he concluded. Even during the protest on Saturday against the delay in operataionalising the Yellow Line, Surya had demanded BMRCL to immediately release the FFC report as the public has the right to transparency and to know the rationale behind the fare hike.

Sangrur (Punjab) [India], July 7 (ANI): After Punjab 'topped' the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2024 rankings, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has credited the 'achievement to the dedication of government school teachers and principals.' Addressing a state-level celebration in Sangrur on Sunday, Kejriwal declared that Punjab's 'transformation' has only just begun. 'Our three major goals are to eliminate drugs, ensure every child gets world-class education, and guarantee employment for every youth.' Slamming previous governments, the AAP Chief said they failed to create the right environment, but when the AAP government did, Punjab's educators performed miracles, turning the state into a national leader in education. 'There's a new confidence in government school students. People are saying--work against drugs is visible, and a revolution is underway in education,' he asserted. Addressing a gathering, Kejriwal stated, 'Today's face-to-face interaction--where the Chief Minister of Punjab, senior Cabinet Ministers, top government officers, and teachers from across Punjab sit together--is nothing short of a revolution. Never before, under Congress, BJP, or Akali Dal governments prior to 2022, have teachers had such a direct dialogue with their Chief Minister and Cabinet Ministers. Many of you have served 20 to 30 years, yet no previous government ever created such a platform.' Recalling the state of affairs before AAP came to power, Kejriwal highlighted, 'Before we won the 2022 elections with your overwhelming support, CM Bhagwant Mann and I used to campaign across Punjab. Back then, we met teachers on top of water towers protesting, many teachers he had to convince to come down. Teachers--who should have been in classrooms building the future of children--were instead protesting on water towers. But today, those same teachers are in dialogue with the Chief Minister. This is a transformation.' Celebrating Punjab's top performance in a national survey, the AAP Chief added, 'I have come from Delhi to congratulate you on the NAS (National Achievement Survey) report, where Punjab has ranked number one. In 2017, Punjab was in the 29th position. This leap to the top is entirely because of the hard work of the teachers and principals.' Acknowledging the enabling role of the government, he further added, 'Of course, this would not have been possible without the environment provided by the new Punjab government. We are the ground staff. The system previously lacked this kind of support. We improved infrastructure, sent teachers for training, even abroad and to IIMs, and launched several programs that made it clear: this government is serious about education.' Reflecting on the 'old stigma' against government school teachers, Kejriwal recounted, 'There was a time when teachers in government schools were insulted, accused of being lazy and unwilling to work. People used to say government teachers don't teach, that lady teachers just sat under trees sewing clothes. But in Delhi, those same teachers delivered exceptional results. And here in Punjab, we didn't import new teachers from the moon--these are the same teachers who have served for decades. The fault wasn't yours, it was the fault of previous governments that exploited you, denied your rights, and forced you to protest when you only wanted to teach.' (ANI)
