Bail granted to SANDF twelve embroiled in murderous scandal
On 11 July 2025, the Randburg Magistrate's Court granted R10 000 bail each to twelve South African National Defence Force officials. They are embroiled in a murderous scandal. Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa was gunned down on 6 August 2023. According to law enforcement, the shooting was an alleged plot by the 12 SANDF members. At the time of the incident, Mathipa was driving on the N1 highway near Hammanskraal. According to Hawks spokesperson, Katlego Mogale, the shooting caused Mathipa to lose control of his vehicle. He veered into a ditch and it resulted in his subsequent death. An investigation into Mathipa's death led the Hawks to Sunnybooi Pinny Wambi, Edward Albert van Deventer, David Mogaditswe, Kgosietsile Letsatsi, Samkelo Ngwenya and Jonathan Nteleza. Mogale said Paulos Matlou, Herbert Mashego, Solomon Lechoenyo, Jacob Mokoena, Richard Mpoetsi and Olyn Lenardus were also implicated. Lieutenant Colonel Mathipa was on duty when he was killed. He was a member of the Gauteng Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit of the Hawks. He was tasked with investigating crimes against the state. 'The accused are also allegedly linked to a case of kidnapping of two male foreign nationals at a mall in Midrand on 29 December 202,' Mogale continued. While the twelve celebrate temporary relief, Mogale has warned that it will be only for a week as they are due back in court next Thursday. Following the granting of bail, the Magistrate postponed the case to 17 July 2025, for the state to appeal the bail judgement.

‘He seems to be walking fine': Video contradicts Longwe Twala injury claim in Senzo Meyiwa murder trial

Picture: Gallo Images/Luba Lesolle The lead investigator in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case has refuted claims implicating Longwe Twala, son of prominent music producer Sello 'Chicco' Twala, in the killing of the former Bafana Bafana captain. Brigadier Bongani Gininda returned to the witness stand at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday to testify on new evidence. New evidence in Senzo Meyiwa murder trial During the proceedings, state prosecutor George Baloyi introduced a two-minute video clip sourced from broadcaster eNCA. The footage was brought in response to an earlier claim made by the late defence lawyer Thulani Mngomezulu during his cross-examination of Gininda. Mngomezulu had alleged that Longwe killed Meyiwa using a .38 Special revolver and accidentally shot himself in the foot in the process. According to Mngomezulu, Longwe later sought medical treatment for a septic wound, with the bullet purportedly removed at Rand Hospital. Longwe was among the individuals present at singer Kelly Khumalo's family home in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni, on 26 October 2014, when the former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was fatally shot. 'Are you able to comment regarding the movement or the gait of the person that you've identified as Mr Longwe Twala?' Baloyi asked. 'Well, yes, he seems to be walking fine, contrary to what was put to me that… he was limping and there was a shooting on the ankle.' 'So that's what I see on the footage; it's not an indication of someone who sustained an injury, particularly a bullet wound injury on the ankle,' Gininda responded. Watch the trial below: The police officer further testified that the footage was believed to have been taken the day after Meyiwa's murder, according to state records. 'Although there's no date there, if one follows the sequence of the events, and my understanding of the request that was put to eNCA from the state's side was that it was a request for the video or activities of the 27th of October 2014. 'That is the following day subsequent to the incident took place, the murder of the deceased.' 'Based on that, I will put then the date of the 27th of October 2014 during the day because one can see that was during the day and the incident would have taken place at night, according to the docket.' Five men charged Five men – Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Ntuli – are on trial for Meyiwa's murder. The accused have been charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of ammunition. All five men have pleaded not guilty. According to Sibiya and Ntanzi's confession statements, Khumalo ordered the hit on Meyiwa. Two soldiers from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) are expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday in Gauteng on charges of murder and kidnapping. The soldiers, aged 36 and 51, were arrested on Sunday, June 22, at the OR Tambo International Airport and in Centurion, Pretoria, respectively. The spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (known as Hawks), Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo, stated that the arrests were carried out by members of the Johannesburg-based Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation, the Headquarters' Serious Organised Crime Investigation, and the Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS). 'The arrests are linked to the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa, who was fatally shot while driving on the N1 highway near Hammanskraal on August 6, 2023. Following the shooting, his vehicle lost control and veered into a ditch,' Singo said.

Two SANDF officials arrested for murder of a police officer
Two suspects who are South African National Defence Force (SANDF) officials are expected to appear at the Randburg Magistrate's Court in connection with the murder of a police officer. The two suspects aged 36 and 51, were arrested on Sunday, 22 June, at OR Tambo International Airport and in Centurion, Pretoria. The arrests were effected by members of the Johannesburg-based Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Headquarters Serious Organised Crime Investigation, and Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS). Hawks spokesperson in Gauteng, Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo, said the arrests are linked to the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa, who was fatally shot while driving on the N1 highway near Hammanskraal on 6 August 2023. Following the shooting, his vehicle lost control and veered into a ditch. Singo said Lieutenant Colonel Mathipa, who was attached to the Hawks' Crimes Against the State section within the Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Gauteng, was on duty conducting an investigation at the time of his death. Singo said during the operation, police also seized a vehicle belonging to the 36-year-old suspect. The vehicle is alleged to have been used in the kidnapping of two male foreign nationals at a mall in Midrand on 29 December 2022. 'It has since been impounded for further forensic investigation. The suspects are expected to appear before the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, 23 June, where they will face charges of murder and kidnapping,' he added.
