Orlando Pirates news: Kaizer Chiefs sniped, R10 million midfielder

Orlando Pirates have yet again beaten Kaizer Chiefs to a prized player. This time it's Polokwane City winger Oswin Appollis. Both clubs tried to sign the 23-year-old in January and last offseason but were met with rejection on both occasions as Appollis continued to prove himself as one of South Africa's best. The second half of last season saw a decline in performance, and it is perhaps because of this why Rise and Shine were willing to let their main man go. According to reports, Orlando Pirates eyeing JS Kabylie midfielder Sadio Kanoute. 'According to Africafoot , the Soweto giants are considering tabling an offer in the region of €500,000 (approximately R10 million) to lure Kanoute, who previously turned out for Simba SC in Tanzania,' a SoccerLaduma report revealed. In other news, there is growing concern that Orlando Pirates may see their golden boy Relebohile Mofokeng leave this winter. 'My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I'm praying every day. I don't want to see him in the Betway Premiership again this season. I know God will answer my prayers,' Sechaba said '[Whether it's in] Spain, England, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Switzerland — Rele can play. I believe that with all my heart. Take him to Barcelona? He can play. PSG? He can play. Any country. I'll be happy — but not Saudi Arabia,' he added. 'Not yet. He's still young. He needs to compete in UEFA competitions. If he goes to Saudi now, he won't experience that. Yes, he'd be rich — but happiness is more important. You can have all the money in the world, but if you're not happy, it's worthless.' Everything you need to know before the ASX opens

Don't miss out on the headlines from Stockhead. Followed categories will be added to My News. Good morning everyone and welcome to Rise and Shine on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. Here's what you should know before the ASX opens today… The ASX looks set to kick Tuesday off on the front foot, with futures up 0.1% by 7am AEST, riding the wave from Wall Street's strong finish to the quarter. Wall Street rockets to record highs Wall Street wrapped up the quarter with record highs. The Dow climbed 0.6%, while both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq rose 0.5%, cementing one of the strongest quarters since 2023. STOCK INDICES Value Change ASX 200 (previous day) 8,542 0.33% S&P 500 6,205 0.52% Dow Jones 44,095 0.63% Nasdaq Comp 20,370 0.47% Euro Stoxx 50 5,303 -0.42% UK FTSE 8,761 -0.43% German DAX 23,910 -0.51% French CAC 7,666 -0.33% The S&P 500 has now surged 25% since its April lows, a rally so sharp it's making even seasoned bulls wonder if the index is getting ahead of itself. Tech was back in the driver's seat. Oracle shot 4% higher on the back of a jaw-dropping US$30 billion annual cloud deal with an unnamed client. This single contract is worth nearly triple the size of its entire cloud business. Microsoft and Meta both touched new highs, with Zuck announcing a bold new pivot into AI 'superintelligence,' tapping Alexandr Wang to lead Meta's newly formed Superintelligence Labs. Apple, meanwhile, is reportedly flirting with OpenAI and Anthropic to power its next-gen Siri, finally admitting its in-house AI efforts might need outside help. And trading platform Robinhood jumped to all-time highs after unveiling tokenised stock trading across the EU. That's right, 24/5 trading of tokenised US equities for 150,000 users. Gold jumps as the greenback wilts Gold perked up by 1% as the US dollar sagged to its weakest point since early 2022. With rate cut whispers growing louder and Trump heckling the Fed like a dad on the sidelines, traders started edging back into safe-haven mode. Investors decided it might be wise to keep a little bullion tucked under the mattress. Powell's chair isn't looking so comfy Donald Trump is now actively auditioning for Fed Chair scout. Trump took a global interest rate chart, signed it, and sent it directly to Jerome Powell with a not-so-subtle note: cut rates, or else. On Truth Social, Trump accused the Fed of costing America 'a fortune' and said Powell 'should be ashamed.' He wants the Fed funds rate slashed to 1%, pronto. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent admitted there's a shortlist of replacements already being discussed - names like Christopher Waller, Kevin Warsh, and David Malpass are doing the rounds. Trump doesn't have to wait until Powell's term ends next May. But for markets, the next big test looms: Thursday's US June jobs report could shift the mood fast. If hiring slows and unemployment ticks up, the 'bad news is good news' crowd might start betting even harder on a Fed cut. Everything you need to know before the ASX opens

Don't miss out on the headlines from Stockhead. Followed categories will be added to My News. Good morning everyone and welcome to Rise and Shine on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Here's what you should know before the ASX opens today… ASX futures were down 0.55% at 7am AEST Thursday, pointing to a sluggish open. Nvidia's still breaking records Overnight, the Dow slipped 0.25%, the S&P 500 closed flat, and the Nasdaq eked out a 0.3% gain. STOCK INDICES Value Change ASX 200 (previous day) 8,559 0.04% S&P 500 6,092 0.00% Dow Jones 42,982 -0.25% Nasdaq Comp 19,974 0.31% Euro Stoxx 50 5,252 -0.85% UK FTSE 8,719 -0.46% German DAX 23,498 -0.61% French CAC 7,558 -0.76% The standout was Nvidia. The AI kingpin jumped 4% to smash its own record, and is now worth US$3.77 trillion. That's pretty much entire-country GDP territory. It's overtaken Microsoft, miles ahead of Apple, and according to Loop Capital, it might be headed for US$6 trillion. Loop reckons Nvidia's not just riding the wave, it is the wave. Monopoly-level pricing power, god-mode margins, and no serious rivals in sight. Alphabet has just rolled out a new AI coding assistant to compete with OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude. And Apple is dealing with a different headache altogether. Brussels slapped them with a €500 million fine, and now EU regulators are twisting their arm to fix the App Store. Meanwhile, the broader market is starting to breathe a bit heavier. Traders reckon we're due for a pause after recent rallies, and as Matt Maley from Miller Tabak put it, 'No market moves in a straight line.' Elsewhere, Trump is circling Fed Chair Jerome Powell like a shark once again. At a press conference in The Hague, Trump called Powell 'very stupid' and 'terrible'. He said he's got 'three or four' names ready to replace Powell, and accused the Fed of keeping US borrowing costs unnecessarily high. Oil chills out After two days of plunging, oil prices finally climbed last night by about 1%. Trump has declared the Middle East conflict 'over' for now after US strikes 'obliterated' key Iranian nuclear sites. He also said talks with Iran will start next week, though he played down the need for any formal nuclear agreement. BP and Shell on mega-merger rumours BP shares spiked 10% in New York after The Wall Street Journal reported early-stage takeover talks. BP's been on the ropes lately, and Shell, reportedly, has been circling for months, waiting for BP's stock and the price of crude to drop enough to make a move. If this goes through, it would be one of the biggest deals in European corporate history, and would create a true heavyweight rival to Exxon and Chevron, especially in LNG. Analysts reckon Shell would have to cough up a 20% premium on BP's already chunky £58 billion valuation. BlackRock eyes up defence sector NATO has just committed to lifting defence spending to 5% of GDP, a big shift that signals the West is rearming for a far more unstable world. No surprise then that BlackRock is betting on bullets and bots. The world's biggest asset manager says the defence sector is gearing up for a fresh surge, and it's not just about tanks and fighter jets anymore. The fundie is talking AI, cyber, surveillance tech, drone warfare ie; the digital armoury of the 21st century. BlackRock's Investment Institute dropped a note last night outlining its bullish case: with geopolitical blocs hardening, China and the US in an AI arms race, and NATO countries jacking up budgets, defence is hot again. For example, DroneShield (ASX:DRO) just landed a $61.6 million contract, sending its stock soaring 20% yesterday. ETF flows into ASX defence and cyber funds are booming too. Betashares' Global Defence ETF (ASX:ARMR) and Cybersecurity ETF (ASX:HACK)have hauled in a combined $136 million in 2025 alone. Commodity/forex/crypto market prices Price (US) Move Gold: $3,331.80 0.26% Silver: $36.26 0.96% Iron ore: $94.52 -0.12% Nickel: $15,075.00 1.14% Copper: $9,847.80 0.71% Zinc: $2,709.35 0.71% Lithium carbonate 99.5% Min China Spot: $8,150.00 0.00% Oil (WTI): $64.89 0.80% Oil (Brent): $67.59 0.68% AUD/USD: $0.6513 0.30% Bitcoin: $107,684 1.60% What got you talking Also in the news… Health Check: UBS turns ultra-bullish on Aussie healthcare leaders The curse has finally lifted after a year nearly devoid of public floats, with what will astonishingly be the first original gold IPO on the ASX coming to market as soon as Friday. Biocurious: CSL's R&D chief says drug development is like falling in love Dengue surges as climate change bites but one Aussie drug trial has slapped symptoms. Everything you need to know before the ASX opens

Don't miss out on the headlines from Stockhead. Followed categories will be added to My News. Good morning everyone and welcome to Rise and Shine on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Here's what you should know before the ASX opens today… The ASX looks set to open in the green on Tuesday, with futures pointing up 0.2% following a relief rally on Wall Street. Wall Street catches its breath The S&P 500 climbed 0.94%, the Nasdaq bounced back 1.52%, and the Dow added 0.75% as investors breathed a little easier with oil prices sliding and fears of a wider Middle East war cooling, at least for now. STOCK INDICES Value Change ASX 200 (previous day) 8,548 0.01% S&P 500 6,033 0.94% Dow Jones 42,515 0.75% Nasdaq Comp 19,701 1.52% Euro Stoxx 50 5,340 0.93% UK FTSE 8,875 0.28% German DAX 23,699 0.78% French CAC 7,742 0.75% Calmer vibes came as Tehran signalled it was open to talks. Traders welcomed the shift to risk-on, and big names did the heavy lifting. AMD led a rebound in chip stocks, Meta jumped as it doubled down on AI (again), and Boeing reminded investors it's still crawling forward on the Air Force One project. All this as investors wait to hear from the Fed Reserve on Wednesday (US time). A cut is off the cards for now, but Chair Powell's tone could shape the outlook for September. Money markets are pricing in a 56% chance of a September trim, but some reckon the 'dot plot' might now point to just one cut this year. Oil cools as Strait of Hormuz stays open Crude oil prices dropped as much as 3% after Iran reportedly used backchannels to tell the world it doesn't want things to get messier. WTI slipped below US$71.50 a barrel after Friday's near 7% jump, with traders calming down on fears of an imminent supply shock. Key pipelines and oil-export infrastructure have so far dodged the fighting. That includes the all-important Strait of Hormuz, the maritime bottleneck where around 20% of global oil moves daily. Any blockage there and prices would go vertical, but for now, shipping lanes are clear. Still, the risk hasn't gone away. Israel hit gas production assets and a TV station in Tehran, while Iran launched another wave of drone and missile attacks. There's plenty of firepower left in this standoff, and any slip-up near Hormuz could send oil soaring, along with inflation expectations. Economists say central banks like the RBA will try to look through any temporary oil price spikes. But if the conflict drags on, energy-driven inflation could handcuff the Fed and others well into 2025. Bitcoin shrugs off war, storms back While the world watches the oil market, Bitcoin just keeps marching higher. It reclaimed the US$108,000 level after a weekend wobble, helped along by fresh ETF inflows and traders betting that even if the Fed stays hawkish, crypto might still be the hedge of choice. Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in over $300 million in fresh money on Friday, and another billion-dollar buy was reported last night. However, some analysts warn that if oil keeps rising, crypto mining costs could climb, making BTC's current momentum harder to sustain. And with the Fed now seen holding rates higher for longer, Bitcoin may need more than just ETF flows to break through resistance at $110k. And finally... It's a quiet one on the data front, but all eyes are on the Bank of Japan this morning, the first of three big central banks to make rate calls this week. No change is expected, but after surprising markets earlier this year by lifting rates for the first time since 2007, investors will be listening closely for tone. Otherwise, the Fed is front and centre midweek, and the ECB looms on Thursday. There's also some price index data from New Zealand today. But in truth, most investors are keeping their powder dry until Powell speaks and the war headlines settle. Commodity/forex/crypto market prices Price (US) Move Gold: $3,384.67 -1.40% Silver: $36.31 0.01% Iron ore: $95.23 -0.16% Nickel: #N/A #N/A Copper: $9,613.00 1.40% Zinc: #N/A #N/A Lithium carbonate 99.5% Min China Spot: $8,150.00 0.00% Oil (WTI): $71.48 -2.06% Oil (Brent): $73.02 -1.63% AUD/USD: $0.6524 0.53% Bitcoin: $108,632 3.90% What got you talking Also in the news… AnteoTech (ASX:ADO) has entered an agreement with Swiss Wyon AG to evaluate its Ultranode tech for medical applications. Health Check: A pancreatic cancer 'cure' has been elusive, but Amplia (ASX:ATX) may have cracked the nut.
