Willem Dafoe in Talks to Reunite With Robert Eggers for WERWULF — GeekTyrant
Robert Eggers is assembling a killer lineup for his next film, Werwulf , and it looks like Willem Dafoe will be part of it. The Oscar-nominated actor is in talks to star opposite Aaron Taylor-Johnson, with Lily-Rose Depp also circling a role. Eggers will direct and co-write the script with his The Northman collaborator, Sjón. Werwulf is set for a Christmas Day 2026 release in North America through Focus Features, which is also producing and financing the project. Eggers and Sjón will produce alongside Focus, with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title, and Chris and Eleanor Columbus executive producing for Maiden Voyage. As for Werwulf , the term originates from Old English and Germanic folklore, referring to a human who can transform into a wolf or a wolf-like creature. Sources say the story is set in 13th century England. The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English. This would mark the fourth collaboration between Eggers and Dafoe, who previously starred in The Lighthouse , The Northman , and Nosferatu . The two are also eyeing another project together, a new adaptation of A Christmas Carol at Warner Bros., with Eggers directing and Dafoe in early talks to star. Dafoe continues to stay busy as he recently appeared in A24's The Legend of Ochi and is currently filming the Apple Original Films project Tenzing . Up next, he'll appear in The Man in the Basement and The Birthday Party . Werwulf is shaping up to be another haunting, visually stunning entry in the filmmaker's growing body of mythic tales. Mark your calendars for December 25, 2026. Source: Deadline

After creepily mastering vampires with his hit Nosferatu remake, director Robert Eggers will reportedly bring back its stars Aaron Taylor Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp for his new werewolf movie
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Director Robert Eggers is bringing back Aaron Taylor-Johnson, one of the stars of his hit Nosferatu remake, for his new werewolf movie, Werwulf, and Lily-Rose Depp may also be coming along for the ride, according to Variety. Eggers is also bringing back Sjón, his co-writer from The Northman, which again makes sense given the historical origins of the werewolf myth, which takes some cultural inspiration from the concept of the berserker, viking warriors who entered animalistic states of frenzy in battle. The Northman was praised by Viking historians for its accuracy and attention to detail (with some caveats about the larger-than-life action sequences), qualities Eggers also brought to the design and dialogue of his first film The Witch, its follow up The Lighthouse, and of course, Nosferatu. It seems that will also be a priority for Werwulf. Stories of humans that become savage animals through magical means are common throughout many cultures the world over, but the specific concept of the werewolf evolved from the Anglo-Saxon myth of the 'werwulf,' translated from Old English as 'man-wolf,' a term which of course lends itself to the title of Eggers' film. I'm personally extremely excited to see Eggers offer up a historical werewolf movie that taps into the same spirit of The Witch, a personal favorite of mine, and Nosferatu, to create a horror movie soaked in atmospheric terror. A dash of The Norseman's famed historical accuracy also feels like the perfect touch for a werewolf movie which Eggers has said is the "darkest" thing he's ever written. Eggers has just about the best track record of any director going right now in terms of cranking out movies that hit just right, and I have all faith Werwulf will also hit the mark. Following in the tradition of Nosferatu, Werwulf is currently scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2026. It's not gonna be 'till the script is ready. Both of the scripts are being written now, and if they're good, then we'll go to production immediately. So, it really depends on how we can get the scripts done. Because the one thing I'm just not gonna do is go into production without a script I feel is fantastic — especially for those characters, who deserve the best. We just finished shooting the second season. I get to do so much fun, insane stuff in this new season. I'm so excited for fans to see it. I hope that we have several, if not many more, years of wonderful story in store for Bullseye and for the whole Daredevil crew. It's such a great, lovely group of people on that show, in front of and behind the camera. I just feel honored to be part of it. The Dex of Season 2 is a new Dex that we haven't really seen yet. I'm very excited for people to see it, and I'm curious to see how they weigh in on it. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp to reunite with Robert Eggers on Werwulf
Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp are reportedly set to reunite with their Nosferatu director Robert Eggers for his new movie Werwulf. The British actor is set to star in the werewolf horror film, while Rose-Depp is in talks to join him, according to reports. The duo previously worked with Eggers on the 2024 Gothic vampire horror Nosferatu. Rose-Depp had the lead role as Ellen Hutter, a woman with a psychic connection with the vampire, and Taylor-Johnson played Friedrich Harding, the husband of Ellen's best friend. Eggers will direct the upcoming horror from a script he co-wrote with Icelandic novelist and poet Sjón, with whom he wrote his 2022 Viking epic The Northman. Werwulf, which is slated to open in U.S. cinemas on Christmas Day next year, is set in 13th-century England and features Old English dialogue. Earlier this year, Eggers teased the film during a Q&A, saying, "It's a medieval werewolf movie. And it's also the darkest thing I've ever written. By far." That is a big claim, considering Eggers' previous films - including The Witch and The Lighthouse - have all been rather dark. Taylor-Johnson, who remains the frontrunner to take over the coveted role of James Bond from Daniel Craig, was most recently seen in Danny Boyle's zombie horror 28 Years Later. His upcoming projects include the thrillers Fuze and Blood on Snow. Meanwhile, Depp was added to the cast of the alien invasion comedy Alpha Gang alongside Chris Pine and Kelvin Harrison Jr. earlier this week. They join previously announced stars Cate Blanchett, Léa Seydoux, Dave Bautista, and Riley Keough.
