Make sports a career, CM urges youth

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi Monday said the students and youths can now think of making sports a career apart from getting employment in industries by availing various skill training imparted by the State government. Majhi said this while addressing the State-level 'Yuva Shakti Samabesh' (Youth Power Congregation) at Aska where he laid the foundation stone for various development projects valued at Rs 550 crore for Ganjam district. Describing Odisha as a State having endless possibilities, Majhi said his government has been giving much importance to sports and therefore spending a lot for developing sports infrastructure across the State. The State has been constructing stadiums in all 314 blocks of Odisha and for the purpose, Rs 4,124 crore has been earmarked to be spent in four years, he said. With facilities available in blocks and gram panchayat levels, the Chief Minister said the village youths can also get opportunities and exhibit their talent in sports. 'They can easily make sports as a career, earn name, fame along with money,' Majhi said, adding that apart from cricket, hockey and football, the State is also promoting Kabaddi and other games. Encouraging the youth, Majhi said that one should know his or her own talent and work for its development. He said of the 4.5 crore population of Odisha, around 1.70 crore people are in the age group of 15-35 years. 'When more than one and a half crore youth become successful, then Odisha will become the growth engine of India, developed as the best State in the country,' he said. Highlighting the industrialisation of the State, he said 13 lakh employment opportunities will be created when an investment of Rs 17 lakh crore is grounded in the State. The investment intents have come through Make In Odisha Conclave and the State government has not wasted a single moment to implement the proposals, the Chief Minister said. Majhi said his government, during one year, has already provided government jobs to 28,346 youths and committed to give jobs to 1.5 lakh youths in five years. The Chief Minister said the State has set a goal of becoming $500 billion economy by 2036 and $1.5 trillion economy by 2047. Therefore, the youths will have a key role in achieving this goal of Odisha, he said. On this occasion, Majhi laid the foundation stone for various development projects which include those for irrigation and road widening. He asked officials to prepare a revised detailed project report for the development of Maa Tara Tarini temple. The Chief Minister said the State will provide for a world-class industrial training institute at Polsara. Attacking the previous BJD regime, the Chief Minister said the BJP government, within one year, has already provided 11.25 reservations for the students belonging to the Socially and Economically Backward Class (SEBC) category. 'The previous BJD government failed to give justice to SEBCs in 24 years, while we have done it in one year,' Majhi claimed. Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, Sports and Youth Services Minister Suryabanshi Suraj and others attended the programme.

Backward class quota in med, engg admission from this year: CM

Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday asserted his govt will implement quota for backward classes for admission in medical and engineering courses from this academic year. The govt had earlier faced opposition criticism for not including medical and engineering courses under the 11.25% quota in higher education announced last month for socially and educationally backward classes (SEBC)s. Responding to media queries during a press conference, Majhi said his govt is committed to ensuring social justice. "For SEBC quota in technical education, there were some issues. Consultations are ongoing. A decision will be taken soon. It will be implemented from this academic year itself," Majhi said. Since advertisement for admission under the earlier rule of no quota for SEBCs had already been issued, the govt consulted various departments involved about possible complications, resulting in the delay behind taking decisions, a govt officer explained. Sources said the govt is working on increasing quota for SC/STs from the current 20% to 38.75%, apart from introducing reservation for SEBCs in technical and professional education. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Good News: You May Be Richer Than You Think Undo When asked to rate himself on a scale of 10, Majhi left it to the people to do so. "It would be unfair to mark myself first class. However, we implemented most major promises we had made to the people," he said. Regarding the govt's stand against alleged corruption during BJD rule, Majhi said the govt is committed to taking action against those involved in mining and chit fund scams. "Officers have been empowered. But such things take time... to collect all information. We will take action at the appropriate time," he said. Majhi also said the govt has begun the process to appoint a new Lokayukta soon and revive the anti-corruption authority.

SEBC quota in engineering, tech courses soon: Odisha Minister

BHUBANESWAR: In the face of widespread demands, the state government is planning to announce reservation for students belonging to the socially and educationally backward classes (SEBC) in engineering and technical courses, on June 12. Minister of state for Skill Development and Technical Education Sampad Chandra Swain told mediapersons on Friday that the government is examining all aspects of the issue and a formal decision will be taken soon. The announcement in this regard is likely to be made on completion of one year of the BJP government in the state on June 12, he said. The state cabinet had recently approved 11.25 per cent reservation for SEBC students in higher educational institutions from the 2025-26 academic session. Besides 11.25 per cent reservation for SEBCs, the state government now provides 22.5 per cent reservation to STs, 16.25 per cent to SCs, five per cent to persons with disabilities and one per cent to ex-servicemen. The announcement had led to protests from Opposition BJD, Congress and other organisations who demanded implementation of 27 per cent reservation for SEBCs in engineering, medical and technical courses also.

BHUBANESWAR : The Congress on Thursday organised a dharna in front of the official residence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi demanding extension of reservation for socially and educationally backward classes (SEBCs) in private educational institutions and private companies. Besides, the quota should be raised to 27 per cent in all educational institutions and jobs, the party demanded. However, the growing unhappiness among the senior leaders over the list of state office-bearers came to the fore at the dharna as many of them did not participate in it. BJD stages stir in Bhubaneswar, demands 27 per cent reservation for SEBCs

BHUBANESWAR : The BJD on Wednesday staged a demonstration in front of the Raj Bhavan demanding reservation for SEBCs in technical institutions and medical colleges. The party also demanded 27 per cent reservation for SEBCs in all educational institutions. Besides, the reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in medical, engineering and technical institutions should be increased to 38.75 per cent from the present 20 per cent, the party leaders said. A delegation of BJD leaders submitted a memorandum to Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati stating the Centre and several other states have already implemented 27 per cent reservation for the SEBCs across educational institutions including medical and technical colleges. They urged the Governor to intervene in the matter to ensure that the Odisha government upholds the principles of social justice and equity. There should also be revision in the reservation for SCs and STs in medical and technical institutions to align with their actual demographic representation, they added. Meanwhile, senior BJD leader Ranendra Pratap Swain has questioned the state government about the fate of the Bill passed in the Odisha Assembly in 2008 for 27 per cent reservation in jobs for the OBCs. The state government had at that time referred the Bill to be included in the ninth schedule of the Constitution. The present government should now pursue the matter with the Centre to ensure 27 per cent reservation for SEBCs, he said.
