Backward class quota in med, engg admission from this year: CM

Time of India10-06-2025
Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday asserted his govt will implement quota for backward classes for admission in medical and engineering courses from this academic year.
The govt had earlier faced opposition criticism for not including medical and engineering courses under the 11.25% quota in higher education announced last month for socially and educationally backward classes (SEBC)s.
Responding to media queries during a press conference, Majhi said his govt is committed to ensuring social justice. "For SEBC quota in technical education, there were some issues. Consultations are ongoing.
A decision will be taken soon. It will be implemented from this academic year itself," Majhi said.
Since advertisement for admission under the earlier rule of no quota for SEBCs had already been issued, the govt consulted various departments involved about possible complications, resulting in the delay behind taking decisions, a govt officer explained.
Sources said the govt is working on increasing quota for SC/STs from the current 20% to 38.75%, apart from introducing reservation for SEBCs in technical and professional education.

When asked to rate himself on a scale of 10, Majhi left it to the people to do so. "It would be unfair to mark myself first class. However, we implemented most major promises we had made to the people," he said.
Regarding the govt's stand against alleged corruption during BJD rule, Majhi said the govt is committed to taking action against those involved in mining and chit fund scams. "Officers have been empowered. But such things take time... to collect all information. We will take action at the appropriate time," he said.
Majhi also said the govt has begun the process to appoint a new Lokayukta soon and revive the anti-corruption authority.

US-Iran deal on cards? Donald Trump meets Saudi defence minister; Tehran sets terms for dialogue

Saudi defence minister Prince Khalid bin Salman (left) (Image: X) and US President Donald Trump (right) (Image: AP) US President Donald Trump met Saudi defence minister Prince Khalid bin Salman at the White House on Thursday to discuss de-escalation efforts with Iran, according to Fox News. Prince Khalid, who is the younger brother of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman , also held talks with White House envoy Steve Witkoff and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth . The meeting took place ahead of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 's Monday meeting with Trump at the White House. Focus on de-escalation and peace: The meeting is crucial for Saudi Arabia as it wants to ease tensions in the region after the recent 12-day war between Israel and Iran. Talks also reportedly covered broader issues of ending the war in Gaza, negotiating the release of remaining hostages and working toward Middle East peace. The Trump administration wants to push for a historic peace deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel in the coming months. Fox news quoting their sources suggested that the meeting was not only about normalizing ties of Saudi Arabia with Israel but also about necessary steps required to reach it. The meeting comes just days after Trump said other countries have expressed interest in joining the Abraham Accords. The recent Middle East conflict dubbed the '12-Day War' saw Israel and the US target Iran's nuclear sites. Strengthening the Abraham Accords: The Abraham Accords, signed at the White House in September 2020 during Trump's first term are a set of agreements that aimed to normalize relations between United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff said on June 25 that expanding the accords is one of the president's 'key objectives' and predicted 'big announcements' about new countries joining soon. Last week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt named Syria as one of the nations Trump is eager to bring into the accords, noting their historic meeting in Saudi Arabia earlier this year during the US President's visit to the Middle East. Saudi-Iran dialogue: The Saudi defence minister spoke on the phone with Iran's Chief of the General Staff, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi on June 29. 'We discussed developments in the region and the efforts being made to maintain security and stability,' Bin Salman wrote on X. . Witkoff is also planning to meet Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi in Oslo next week to restart nuclear talks, according to Axios. The Iranian foreign ministry said Araghchi spoke on the phone Thursday with Norwegian foreign minister Espen Eide to discuss efforts to ease regional tensions. Trump on Iran talks: Speaking to local media on Thursday, Trump said Iran wants to initiate talks with the US and 'it is time that they do.' He added that the US does not want to hurt Iran. 'I know they want to meet and if it is necessary I will do it,' Trump said. Iran's conditions for talks: In an email interview with ANI, Iran's Ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi, said any negotiations with the US are meaningless unless Washington offers a 'credible guarantee' to prevent future acts of aggression by Israel and the US. 'As for negotiations with the United States, considering their betrayal of diplomacy and complicity with the Zionist regime in launching illegal attacks on Iran, while a diplomatic process was still ongoing, there will be no meaning or value in any talks unless a credible guarantee is provided to prevent the recurrence of such acts of aggression,' he said. Elahi was referring to two major military operations last month. On June 13, Israel launched 'Operation Rising Lion,' carrying out widespread airstrikes on Iranian soil that targeted nuclear sites at Natanz and Fordow and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) command bases. Several senior IRGC commanders and nuclear scientists were reportedly killed. This was followed by US strikes on June 21–22 under 'Operation Midnight Hammer,' which also targeted Iranian nuclear infrastructure. Iran has strongly condemned both operations as blatant violations of international law and the UN Charter.

Public seethe as OAS strike cripples essential services

BHUBANESWAR: As the state grapples with floods and the government faces mounting pressure over ensuring smooth and incident-free completion of Rath Yatra rituals along with paddy procurement across districts, the mass leave and pen-down strike by OAS and ORS officers to protest the assault on additional commissioner of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation Ratnakar Sahoo has pushed the administration to the brink. Despite the assurances of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and senior ministers of taking strictest of action against those involved in the incident, the OAS Association has been unrelenting, and continued its strike in different districts. The Association on Thursday issued a three-day ultimatum to the state government to arrest BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan, whom it accused of being the kingpin behind the assault. It also demanded provision of adequate security for all field-level executive officers including tehsildars, sub-collectors, BDOs and executive officers, and public condemnation of the incident by the government. Notwithstanding the serious problems faced by common citizens in availing public services, around 1,500 OAS and ORS officers working in more than 20 districts, including Cuttack, Khurda, Ganjam, Balangir, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Kendrapara, Sambalpur and Koraput continued their indefinite mass leave, disrupting day-to-day government work. The protest also hampered administrative services in Lok Seva Bhawan here and other government establishments in the capital city. Apart from the OAS and ORS bodies at the state and district-level, a dozen of other employees associations including Odisha Engineers' Service Association have also extended their support to the agitation. The protest has left thousands of citizens to grapple with delays in availing a wide range of critical services - from caste and income certificates to filing grievance for land mutation.

Sabari Bhavan to preserve tribal pride, says CM Mohan Majhi

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday sought whole-hearted participation of tribal communities in the state to achieve the goal of Viksit Odisha by 2036. Inaugurating the Sabari Sanskrutika Bhavan, a centre for short-term stay and cultural activities for the people of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur and Rayagada districts, at IRC Village here, the chief minister said the government has prepared a vision document which envisages Viksit Odisha through all-round development, holistic growth and tribal empowerment. Exuding confidence that state's 24 per cent tribal population will play a crucial role in the onward journey, Majhi said 36 specific programmes have been outlined under the initiative '36 for 36' to achieve the goal by 2036 when Odisha will celebrate its 100 years of formation. 'The state government, having completed a successful year, is continuing its efforts with renewed vigour and commitment. In the coming days, the development journey will gain further momentum,' he added. Majhi said the government is committed to ensure balanced development of the state. The Sabari Bhavan will symbolise the pride of the people of Odisha and serve as an inspiration for the new generation, he said.
