New Top Oversight Democrat: Stephen Miller ‘biggest piece of s—‘ in US
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the newly elected top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, laid into White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller Thursday over his support for President Trump's robust immigration crackdown. 'Stephen Miller is doing what he loves to do, which is be essentially the biggest piece of s— in this country,' Garcia said in an appearance on the Pod Save America podcast. 'Stephen Miller should be ashamed for the way he's acting. I can't even believe he's from our state, which actually makes me more, uh, more, more sick,' he told host Jon Favreau. The California lawmaker went further, warning the American dream is being 'ripped away' from immigrants through continued raids and deportations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as well as large-scale arrests and subsequent protests. In response to the initiative, hundreds in California, Texas, New York and beyond have taken to the streets to demonstrate against Trump's mass deportation agenda. Garcia encouraged individuals to attend the non-violent demonstrations while lawmakers continue to fight what he called injustices in court. 'We've got to continue winning in the courts, and that's going to continue,' the lawmaker said. 'And the other piece of it, people's reaction, the protesting, the anger, the rising up against these actions also is having an effect. And you're seeing that, I mean, what's happening in LA, which was widely, as you know, mostly peaceful.' The president and White House have contended that the demonstrations, primarily those in Los Angeles earlier this month, could put ICE agents in danger. In response, the president authorized the deployment of National Guard soldiers and Marines to California to quell the unrest. 'Yes, there were some incidents of violence we denounced as we get that, but widely peaceful,' Garcia continued on the podcast. 'The protests are energizing the population and the public to stand up against us, and we are seeing the impact it's having on the Republicans electorally.' He added, 'I mean, Trump's immigration numbers have never been as low as they are right now because they're seeing what he wants to do implemented across the country.' The administration has also touted record low border encounters in recent weeks, citing border security policies implemented when Trump returned to the Oval Office. 'In the last 24 hours the Border Patrol encountered a total of 95 illegal aliens across the entire southern border. That is the lowest number EVER recorded,' border czar Tom Homan wrote in a statement on social platform X. 'To continue this great work and make it more permanent, we need the Big Beautiful Bill passed so we can finish the job, to include the biggest deportation operation the American people voted for,' he added, citing the massive reconciliation package currently making its way through the Senate. Republicans have just a week to get the tax and spending bill to Trump's desk before a self-imposed July 4 deadline — but that timeline has faced some road bumps due to internal divisions over cuts and the Senate parliamentarian's latest decisions.

US migrant detention hits record 59,000 as Trump ramps up arrests
The United States is holding a record number of migrants in immigration detention, as President Donald Trump's second administration accelerates mass arrests across the country. By June 23, 2025, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was detaining around 59,000 people—far above the 41,500-bed limit set by Congress and the highest figure in US immigration history, according to internal data obtained by CBS News. Just under half of those currently held—about 47%—have no criminal record at all, and fewer than 30% have been convicted of crimes. In June so far, ICE has averaged 1,200 arrests per day, peaking above 2,000 on two occasions. That's nearly double the average during the early months of Trump's second term, but still short of the 3,000 daily target reportedly set by White House adviser Stephen Miller. The current detainee count surpasses the previous high of around 55,000 recorded in 2019, during Trump's first term. Two former ICE officials told CBS they had never seen the agency detain so many people at once. Who is being detained? According to government figures: 47% of detainees have no criminal record Fewer than 30% have criminal convictions Many were arrested in workplace raids or during targeted operations across major cities While ICE has the authority to detain anyone suspected of immigration violations, the broadening scope of arrests now includes individuals with no prior offences. Official messaging stresses violent crime Despite these numbers, Trump administration officials continue to link the detention drive with public safety. 'In LA, what we have been going after is the worst of the worst,' said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in an interview with Fox News. 'They are murderers. They are people who have been perpetuating assault and trafficking human beings.' DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said, 'ICE targets the worst of the worst—including gang members, murderers, and rapists. In President Trump's first 100 days, 75 per cent of ICE arrests were criminal illegal aliens with convictions or pending charges.' A recent press release from DHS highlighted 11 individuals arrested in Los Angeles—10 of whom had records involving violent or drug-related crimes. Pressure from the White House for mass arrests Internal discussions suggest that the White House is pushing for a sharp increase in arrests. Top adviser Stephen Miller and Secretary Noem have reportedly asked ICE to arrest 3,000 individuals a day—three times the average daily arrest rate in Trump's early second term, according to a cable made public earlier this month. To support this surge, the administration is seeking $147 billion in immigration-related funding over the next decade and has signed contracts to expand detention centre capacity. It has also revived the 287(G) programme, which allows state and local police to enforce immigration laws. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said at a press conference, 'We are committed to aggressively and efficiently removing illegal aliens from the United States, and ensuring our law enforcement officers have the resources necessary to do so. The safety of the American people depends upon it.' Interior arrests replacing border detentions With border crossings at historic lows, the focus has shifted from the border to the interior. Data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) shows that ICE made around 65,000 deportations in the first 100 days of Trump's second term, up from a daily average of 759 during President Biden's final year. The administration has also petitioned the US Supreme Court to overturn a Massachusetts court ruling that requires a 10-day notice before deporting migrants to third countries. The filing follows a dispute over attempts to deport individuals convicted of crimes to South Sudan. What to do if approached by ICE Abhisha Parikh, a US-based immigration attorney, posted a list of precautions on Instagram for people approached by ICE: • Stay calm and don't run • Ask if you are free to leave—if yes, walk away • Ask to see badges; ICE officers often wear 'Police' on uniforms • Remain silent if questioned • Don't resist or reach for items suddenly • You can refuse searches of your car, phone or home unless there's a judge's warrant • Never present false documents or lie • If undocumented, say you wish to remain silent and want a lawyer • Don't sign anything before speaking with a legal adviser Few legal pathways for undocumented Legal recourse is limited for undocumented Indians in the US, especially those with criminal convictions. Ajay Sharma, founder of Abhinav Immigration Services told Business Standard, 'There are not many legal pathways for those on illegal status, especially the ones with criminal records. Even those without criminal records who try to file in any permitted category must leave the country once to get new status validated, and the probability of being denied re-entry is still very high.'

Most Americans think undocumented immigrants should stay
Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills Bloomberg Bloomberg Bloomberg For more than a decade, President Donald Trump has been scapegoating immigrants, decrying them as criminals and vermin and vowing to deport them by the American people, by and large, aren't buying it, nor should they.A new Pew Charitable Trust poll shows that 65% of Americans support having undocumented immigrants stay legally if certain requirements are met. About half of those say a green card should be possible, and the rest say a path to citizenship should be available. The poll also showed that majorities oppose suspending most asylum applications, curtailing the Temporary Protected Status program, and conducting workplace raids — all actions the Trump administration has reality is that Trump is out of step with Americans on this issue. After years of pounding away at immigrants, he has failed to persuade Americans that they are an invading force threatening their jobs and safety. When asked whether there should be a national effort to deport undocumented immigrants, only 31% of Americans replied Shah, who leads the American Civil Liberties Union's immigration policy work, told me that 'people are questioning the disconnect between Trump's rhetoric on public safety and what's happening on the ground.''You're seeing ordinary communities subjected to these violent, scary ICE operations,' she said. 'This is not what people signed up for and it's starting to show up in poll numbers.' ACLU polling shows 56% of Americans oppose deploying troops to quell protests, as Trump has done in Los although Americans want strong border security, they have little taste for an indiscriminate approach that sweeps up legal immigrants and citizens border czar Tom Homan, enforcement in the early months of Trump's second term focused heavily on immigrants with criminal records and pre-existing deportation orders. Homan, who had performed a similar duty for the Obama administration, knew that while the numbers would not be huge, the impact would meet with public was openly dissatisfied with the results. There just aren't enough criminals to come anywhere close to the numbers Trump wants. For that, you need to go after everyday workers — the line cooks, construction workers, farmhands and landscapers that fill myriad jobs across the late May, Stephen Miller, the architect of Trump's immigration policies, dressed down ICE's top field directors. One official told the Washington Examiner that 'Stephen Miller wants everybody arrested. 'Why aren't you at Home Depot? Why aren't you at 7-Eleven?'' the official said. Instead of the 660 arrests they'd been averaging daily, the new goal was 3, broader, far more brutal enforcement that followed has exposed to Americans the ugly reality of mass deportations. They don't like what they see: A recent Fox News poll shows that 53% now disapprove of Trump's immigration approach just doesn't work in an age of social media, which now is flooded daily with up-close videos of what on-the-street enforcement looks like. One recent video shows the middle-aged father of three Marines arrested at his landscaping job and beaten about the head and neck by masked agents. One of his sons, Marine veteran Alejandro Barranco, said his father, Narciso Barranco, 56, had lived in California since the '90s without legal status, but also without any criminal record. 'He always taught us to respect, to love our country, to always give back,' the younger Barranco said, adding that he feels 'betrayed.'Polls also have some tough realities for Democratic leaders. The number of voters who support a border wall has been ticking up, the Pew survey found. Trump introduced the notion of a border wall (that Mexico would pay for) in his first campaign and has continued to extol it. Now, 56% of Americans favor it — a 10 percentage point increase from are not the same as votes and should not dictate public policy, but they can reveal some elements of a long-needed overhaul of immigration practices. That would require both sides to look past their talking having succeeded at dramatically lowering border crossings, should shift his focus back to criminal removals. It would also serve him well — particularly among his modest but growing support among Hispanic voters — to create a limited path to legal status for those who have worked in the US and stayed on the right side of the should acknowledge the legitimate strains imposed on border states and ports of entry during the Biden years, the public's growing desire for a wall, and the need to find effective ways of dealing with visa overstays, which are responsible for a significant share of those here of failure to hammer out a functional immigration policy have led to where we are today: masked agents snatching anyone suspected of being here illegally, National Guard soldiers putting down protests, fields empty of workers, and raids that can leave lasting wounds in a community left wondering who will be taken next. That's bad enough; our elected leaders shouldn't wait to see what's next.

As a Mamdani Victory Looms, Anti-Muslim Attacks Roll In From the Right
Even before Zohran Mamdani claimed victory in New York City's Democratic mayoral primary, he had become a target of racist attacks from the far right. Those attacks have only intensified in the wake of his commanding performance on Tuesday, with Republican elected officials and right-wing media figures accusing him of promoting Islamic law, supporting terrorism and posing a threat to the safety of New Yorkers, especially Jews. There has been nothing subtle about it: Stephen Miller, the architect of the Trump administration's immigration policy, called Mr. Mamdani's apparent win 'the clearest warning yet of what happens to a society when it fails to control migration.' Representative Andy Ogles, Republican of Tennessee, accused Mr. Mamdani of supporting terrorists and asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to strip him of his citizenship and deport him. Representative Nancy Mace, Republican of South Carolina, shared a photo of Mr. Mamdani preparing for an Eid service while dressed in a kurta, writing, 'we sadly have forgotten' the Sept. 11 attacks, which occurred when Mr. Mamdani was 9 years old and living in Manhattan. And Charlie Kirk, the head of Turning Point USA, a leading group for conservative youth, sought to connect him to those attacks even more directly. '24 years ago a group of Muslims killed 2,753 people on 9/11,' he wrote. 'Now a Muslim Socialist is on pace to run New York City.' The attacks on Mr. Mamdani, who would be the first Muslim mayor of New York City if elected, deal in well-worn Islamophobic and anti-immigrant tropes. To some, they carry echoes of the 'birther' conspiracy theory Donald J. Trump stoked for years before he was elected president, when he falsely claimed that President Barack Obama was Muslim and born in Kenya. Mr. Obama is Christian and was born in Hawaii; Mr. Mamdani is Muslim and was born to Indian parents in Uganda. But like the 'birther' attacks, the vitriolic barbs being aimed at Mr. Mamdani seek to paint him as a shadowy, dangerous figure who bears no resemblance to the candidate himself.
