After recent superstitious mob, Kedah Religious Dept to monitor graves of Sg Korok victims over fears of un-Islamic practices
JERLUN, July 10 — The Kedah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAIK) will monitor the graves of the six family members who died in the tragedy at Sungai Korok last Saturday to prevent any activities that are contrary to Islamic teachings. JHEAIK director Datuk Dr Abd Ghani Zainuddin said that although no activities contrary to Islamic teachings had been detected at the cemetery so far, the department was taking precautionary measures. 'The Kubang Pasu district religious office has received a complaint regarding the possibility of suspicious activities at the cemetery,' he said. 'We have mobilised personnel to carry out monitoring, and so far, there has been no need to install barrier ropes to cordon off the site,' he said when contacted today. He added that monitoring would continue from time to time, and appropriate action would be taken if any activities were found to be against Islamic teachings. He also reminded the public not to engage in any superstitious practices that go against religious teachings. Meanwhile, the secretary of the At-Taqwa Mosque, Mhd Shukri Hassan, said many visitors had been seen stopping by and reciting prayers at the graves. 'There were people stopped outside the mosque's fence and offered prayers for the deceased, as the graves of the six family members are located next to the village road,' he said when met today. He added that the mosque committee would continue monitoring the situation. 'We have contacted the police and religious authorities. If we observe any suspicious activities, we will report them for further action,' he said. In last Saturday's tragedy, husband and wife Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, and Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31, along with their four children, died after the Proton Iswara car they were travelling in is believed to have skidded and plunged into Sungai Korok in Kampung Kemboja near here. — Bernama

Deadly stretch: Sungai Korok claims eight lives in three years, safety concerns mount after latest tragedy
ALOR SETAR, July 8 — Sungai Korok near Jitra, the location where a family of six were found dead after their car veered off the road and plunged into the river, has claimed a total of eight lives since 2021. Kubang Pasu district police chief Supt Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim said the figure included casualties from the latest incident yesterday. 'In Dec 2021, a four-year-old boy died after the car he was in skidded and plunged into the river. Then, in Dec 2022, a 12-year-old boy was found dead after the car driven by his father veered off and sank into the riverbed. 'However, no accident was reported in the Sungai Korok area in 2023 and last year,' he told reporters today. Mohd Radzi added that in May this year, a car carrying four university students plunged into the river, but all four victims managed to escape through the right rear window. 'The most heartbreaking incident was yesterday's tragedy, where six family members died after their car was believed to have veered off the road and slid into the river,' he said. He said accidents at Sungai Korok are believed to be caused by drivers losing control, skidding, or human error, which led to vehicles plunging into the river. At the same time, he noted that members of the public have also suggested that safety barriers be installed along the high-risk stretches of the road, as there have been previous cases of drowning and fatal accidents. 'There is also a need to enhance road safety awareness campaigns, especially for those driving alone or with family members along narrow roads near rivers, to prevent such tragedies from recurring,' he said. — Bernama

Missing Malaysian family of 6 found dead in submerged car
A family of six in Malaysia , including four children aged between six months and nine years, were found dead on Monday in a car submerged in a river. A couple aged 32 and 31 and their children were found in the back seat of the Proton Iswara car in Sungai Korok in Kedah two days after they were reported missing, according to reports by the local newspaper The Star. Rescue personnel cut open the car's roof and broke its windows to retrieve the bodies. Family members at the scene were seen crying while the recovery process was taking place. 'We have been searching along the Korok River road since the day my brother disappeared, but there are no clues because the river is wide and deep, and the water is murky,' said Nor Syafiqah Ishak, the younger brother of one of the victims, who is believed to be the father. 'Until this morning, when the water in the river receded a little, someone saw the end of the bonnet of the car, and we all went straight here,' he told reporters at the scene on Monday. On Monday morning, local fire and rescue authorities received an emergency call about a car seen floating in the river.
