Deadly stretch: Sungai Korok claims eight lives in three years, safety concerns mount after latest tragedy
Kubang Pasu district police chief Supt Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim said the figure included casualties from the latest incident yesterday.
'In Dec 2021, a four-year-old boy died after the car he was in skidded and plunged into the river. Then, in Dec 2022, a 12-year-old boy was found dead after the car driven by his father veered off and sank into the riverbed.
'However, no accident was reported in the Sungai Korok area in 2023 and last year,' he told reporters today.
Mohd Radzi added that in May this year, a car carrying four university students plunged into the river, but all four victims managed to escape through the right rear window.
'The most heartbreaking incident was yesterday's tragedy, where six family members died after their car was believed to have veered off the road and slid into the river,' he said.
He said accidents at Sungai Korok are believed to be caused by drivers losing control, skidding, or human error, which led to vehicles plunging into the river.
At the same time, he noted that members of the public have also suggested that safety barriers be installed along the high-risk stretches of the road, as there have been previous cases of drowning and fatal accidents.
'There is also a need to enhance road safety awareness campaigns, especially for those driving alone or with family members along narrow roads near rivers, to prevent such tragedies from recurring,' he said. — Bernama

JOHOR BARU, July 13 — An individual is feared drowned after falling into a seawater channel following a two-motorcycle accident along Jalan Bazar Karat, near Pos Malaysia, last night. According to the Johor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre, an emergency call was received at 10.49 pm, and the first response team arrived at the scene six minutes later. 'The Operations Response Team found that the accident involved a Yamaha motorcycle and another bike with an unconfirmed registration number, believed to have been flung into the river. 'One victim is suspected to have fallen into the seawater channel, while three others were taken to the hospital before rescuers arrived,' the statement read. Search operations were carried out within a 30-metre radius of the site, including three dives to a depth of 12 feet, but the missing victim has yet to be found. The Yamaha motorcycle was successfully retrieved, and the operation was called off at 1.14 am. The case has been handed over to police for further action. The operation involved 16 personnel from the Larkin and Skudai Fire and Rescue Stations, including members of the Water Rescue Team, supported by various rescue vehicles. — Bernama

‘I heard a baby crying': Sg Petani resident finds newborn left naked by roadside; cops nab secondary schooler for abandoning child, partner in hospital
SUNGAI PETANI, July 13 — A newborn baby boy was found abandoned with no clothing or covering, on rocky ground by the roadside at Taman Cempaka Indah, Bukit Selambau, yesterday morning. Kuala Muda police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said police received a call reporting the matter at 9.55 am. 'A resident who was hanging out clothes heard loud cries and began searching the area. She screamed upon discovering the baby lying by the roadside. 'Neighbours quickly came out to help, moving the baby to a safer spot before contacting the police,' he said in a media statement today. He added that there were no surveillance cameras in the area where the baby was found. 'The baby was taken to the Emergency Unit of Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for further examination. 'Medical checks confirmed the baby was in stable condition, with only minor scratches on the right eye and right side of the body,' said Hanyan. He added that following the discovery, a 17-year-old male secondary school student has been remanded for two days, from yesterday, to assist with the investigation. 'A 19-year-old female, believed to be his partner, has been admitted to the hospital for further examination and treatment. Investigations are ongoing, and the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code,' he said. — Bernama

Leak of alleged Judicial Appointments Commission meeting minutes online triggers calls for probe
KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 — An alleged excerpt of a Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting minutes from May has been leaked on social media. The excerpts, which appear to have originated on Reddit, are now circulating on Facebook and X. The minutes, which are classified, appear to contain allegations similar to those in a leaked police report lodged on behalf of a senior judge in June. 'Madness! If this document is true...' Public Accounts Committee chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said on Facebook. The police report was made after Malaysiakini contacted the judge on June 12 seeking comment on allegations that the judge was accused of judicial interference during a JAC meeting in May. Mas Ermieyati, who is also the Masjid Tanah MP, said while it is unknown whether the leaked document is real or fake, it carries very serious allegations. 'The government must answer and an investigation must be launched,' she urged. The allegations against the senior judge, as well as concerns about alleged interference in the appointment of judges after Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat retired as chief justice, have sparked outrage. Last week, nine PKR lawmakers led by Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli called for a royal commission of inquiry as well as the Parliament Special Select Committee on reforms to probe the allegations. Rafizi claimed that a scandal as bad as the VK Lingam judge-fixing episode may be in the making. The Malaysian Bar will be marching on Monday to hand over a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim calling for an RCI among other demands. Meanwhile, Anwar will meet with Pakatan Harapan MPs regarding the scandal on Monday as well. The Attorney General's Chambers has downplayed concerns about the judiciary, saying a comparison to the Lingam scandal was unwarranted. It also said that the allegations against the senior judge were just pure speculation about 'procedural irregularities'.
