Reveal value of airbase calibration job, says MP

Former deputy defence minister Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz also urged the defence ministry to disclose if any penalty had been imposed on the company that failed to deliver four Black Hawk helicopters. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A former deputy defence minister has called on the government to reveal the value of a new contract awarded to a firm which failed to supply four Black Hawk helicopters for the military last year. Tanah Merah MP Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz said the defence ministry should explain the rationale for awarding the contract involving three military air bases to Aerotree Defence and Services Sdn Bhd. Ikmal said, if true, it would be an 'unhealthy' culture in terms of defence asset procurement. 'The government must reveal the value of the contract in line with the principle of transparency. All the more since this is the same company that failed to supply the much-needed Black Hawk helicopters,' the Bersatu MP told FMT. On Wednesday, FMT reported that Aerotree had been awarded a contract to calibrate the instrument landing system equipment for fixed-wing aircraft at three military air bases. This came eight months after the defence ministry cancelled a RM187 million Black Hawk lease contract it signed with the firm after it failed to deliver the aircraft despite three date revisions. The four helicopters, leased for five years, were intended to serve as a platform for the army's Air Team Nucleus, supporting both training and operational flight missions. Ikmal, who chairs Perikatan Nasional's defence bureau, urged the defence ministry to disclose if any penalty had been imposed on the company for failing to deliver the helicopters. He said the public deserved to know the company's track record in military procurement and defence facility development, especially in light of its failure in the previous deal. FMT has reached out to the defence ministry for comment.

Man dies after suspected beating over motorcycle noise dispute in Tanah Merah, say police

TANAH MERAH, June 20 — A 60-year-old local man has been confirmed dead, believed to have been beaten in Kampung Buloh Ipoh, here, yesterday. Tanah Merah district police chief, Supt Mohd Haki Hasbullah confirmed the incident and said further investigations were still underway and details of the incident would follow. 'The victim's body has been taken to Tanah Merah Hospital for a post-mortem,' he told Bernama today. Meanwhile, a villager who only wanted to be known as Solah, 40, said the incident occurred following a fight between the victim and the suspect. 'Before the incident, I had a chance to chat with the victim because his house was right in front of mine. He looked normal and managed to reprimand several villagers. 'I only became aware of the incident when I saw the presence of many police officers and residents at the scene of the incident which was about 100 metres from his house,' he told Bernama at the scene of the incident. According to him, he rushed to the location and was shocked to see the victim dead with facial injuries. Solah also said the victim lived with his 78-year-old mother and has never caused any problems with villagers. 'I understand the incident stemmed from the victim's reprimand over the noise of the suspect's motorcycle. They were said to have a fight before the victim is believed to have been beaten with a stick,' he said. — Bernama

Singapore police probe MRT track trespass after clip emerges online (VIDEO)

SINGAPORE, June 12 — A police investigation is under way in Singapore after a video emerged online showing a person walking along an MRT track between Simei and Tanah Merah stations, raising serious safety concerns. The footage, which appears to have been taken by the individual himself, shows an oncoming train carrying passengers before the man crosses the tracks after it passes. The area is near construction works for viaducts connected to the upcoming East Coast Integrated Depot. Responding to Channel News Asia's queries yesterday, SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai confirmed the rail operator was aware of the incident and had lodged a police report. 'We take a serious view of this incident, as track trespassing poses severe safety risks,' said Lam. 'Such reckless actions not only endanger the individual but can also cause service disruptions, affecting many commuters. When emergency brakes are applied, there is also a risk of causing injury to commuters onboard the train.' Lam added that SMRT is cooperating fully with the police in the ongoing investigation.
