Post Malone joins reunited Nirvana at Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary concert

Nirvana surprised fans by reuniting with Post Malone as singer as part of Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall. It marked the first time the grunge pioneers - drummer Dave Grohl, guitarist Pat Smear and bassist Krist Novoselic - have played a major televised performance with a male singer since the death of frontman Kurt Cobain in 1994. Earlier this month, they played the charity FireAid concert in Los Angeles with a rotating cast of female singers. St Vincent sang 'Breed', Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon performed 'School', Joan Jett led 'Territorial Pissings' while Grohl's own daughter, Violet, fronted 'All Apologies'. This time, 29-year-old rapper Malone lent his vocals to the band's classic 1991 single 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.' While Grohl has expressed his preference for female singers fronting any reunion, the band have played with male singers before. They were joined by Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis and Deer Tick's John J. McCauley at a Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame after-party in 2014. McCauley joined them again at the Cal Jam festival in 2018. In 2012, they released a song, 'Cut Me Some Slack', with former Beatle Paul McCartney on lead vocals. Post Malone is a longtime Nirvana fan. During the pandemic lockdown in 2020, he performed a Nirvana tribute set via livestream to raise funds for coronavirus relief efforts. He recently announced that he will release that 14-song set on vinyl for Record Store Day on April 12. At the Saturday Night Live concert, Adam Sandler recalled Nirvana's first appearance on the sketch comedy show while he was a cast member in 1992, calling it 'an explosive moment for all of us.' He then introduced the reunited group as: 'Post Nirvana.' The performance was well received on social media, with one X user saying: 'Post Malone just stole the show at #SNL50 with that Nirvana cover. Holy s***' Another added: 'He's mastered every genre of music but Post Malone was born to play Nirvana songs.' While a third wrote: 'Post Malone fronting Nirvana wasn't something I realized how badly I needed to see.' The concert, which was hosted by Jimmy Fallon, also saw appearances from Jack White, Miley Cyrus and Robyn. Arcade Fire were joined by David Byrne and St Vincent for a cover of David Bowie's 'Heroes', Devo played with former Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen on drums, while Lady Gaga sang 'Dick in the Box.'

Why Dave Grohl only wants female singers to front Nirvana reunions

The charity FireAid concert played host to the closest thing the world will see to a Nirvana reunion, as the band's surviving members teamed up with a rotating cast of female rock artists for a set of songs such as 'Breed' and 'Territorial Pissings'. Held at the Inuit Dome in Inglewood, California, the event was put together in aid of those affected by the devastating California wildfires, with performances from Billie Eilish, Green Day, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dr Dre, Joni Mitchell, Katy Perry, Stevie Wonder, Olivia Rodrigo, Pink and Stevie Nicks. For rock fans, the biggest surprise of the night was the unexpected reunion of Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic, with guest vocalists stepping in for the late Kurt Cobain. St Vincent growled her way through Nevermind classic 'Breed', complete with some serious guitar shredding, while Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, a longtime friend of the band, took on lead vocals for 'School'. Meanwhile, Joan Jett led a raucous rendition of 'Territorial Pissings' while Grohl's own daughter, Violet, sang 'All Apologies' from the group's final album, In Utero. St Vincent, Jett and Gordon previously fronted the band when Nirvana were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, leading to the unofficial name 'Hervana'. Nearly every time, a female singer (or several) has been brought on to perform the late artist's words, an idea Grohl said came to them around the Rock Hall of Fame ceremony. 'We thought, 'Wait, it has to be all women,' he told Rolling Stone at the time. 'Don't even ask anyone else. If we can fill the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performance with these incredible women singing Nirvana songs, then we'll have achieved our own revolution.'' He added: 'It also added a whole other dimension to the show. It added substance and depth, so it didn't turn into a eulogy. It was more about the future.' 'Wait this is the coolest thing I've seen today,' one person wrote on X/Twitter, quote-tweeting footage of Violet Grohl's appearance. 'Beautiful moment in rock history I just stumbled upon on TV,' another fan wrote, adding a crying emoji. Many more said they had been given 'goosebumps' while watching the show.

Three-Fourths of Nirvana Reunite for Bruising FireAid Set With St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett and Violet Grohl

Fans in the Intuit Dome wondering what hit them may have belatedly realized they were witnessing the closest thing to a Nirvana reunion we'll get: The band's three surviving members — Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear — blazing through bruising versions of 'Breed' with St. Vincent on vocals, 'School' with longtime friend and patron Kim Gordon and 'Territorial Pissings' with Joan Jett, all filling the lead vocal slot vacated by Kurt Cobain's death almost 31 years ago. Each singer brought the full gravel out of their voices while channeling Cobain, but St. Vincent in particular showed a rare ferocity. For the final track, Grohl's daughter Violet took the mic for a much more chill song — a version of 'All Apologies,' the beautiful lament that closes the band's third and final studio album, 'In Utero.' The set was actually a reprise of the four-song showcase that the surviving members — and most of the above singers — played at the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, although Lorde performed there instead of Violet Grohl. After that evening's long ceremony (ended after 1 a.m.), friends and associates of the band decamped for an ultra-late blast through even more songs from the Nirvana canon featuring all of the evening's singers.
