Post Malone joins reunited Nirvana at Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary concert

Independent15-02-2025
Nirvana surprised fans by reuniting with Post Malone as singer as part of Saturday Night Live 's 50th anniversary concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall.
It marked the first time the grunge pioneers - drummer Dave Grohl, guitarist Pat Smear and bassist Krist Novoselic - have played a major televised performance with a male singer since the death of frontman Kurt Cobain in 1994.
Earlier this month, they played the charity FireAid concert in Los Angeles with a rotating cast of female singers. St Vincent sang 'Breed', Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon performed 'School', Joan Jett led 'Territorial Pissings' while Grohl's own daughter, Violet, fronted 'All Apologies'.
This time, 29-year-old rapper Malone lent his vocals to the band's classic 1991 single 'Smells Like Teen Spirit.'
While Grohl has expressed his preference for female singers fronting any reunion, the band have played with male singers before. They were joined by Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis and Deer Tick's John J. McCauley at a Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame after-party in 2014. McCauley joined them again at the Cal Jam festival in 2018.
In 2012, they released a song, 'Cut Me Some Slack', with former Beatle Paul McCartney on lead vocals.
Post Malone is a longtime Nirvana fan. During the pandemic lockdown in 2020, he performed a Nirvana tribute set via livestream to raise funds for coronavirus relief efforts.
He recently announced that he will release that 14-song set on vinyl for Record Store Day on April 12.
At the Saturday Night Live concert, Adam Sandler recalled Nirvana's first appearance on the sketch comedy show while he was a cast member in 1992, calling it 'an explosive moment for all of us.' He then introduced the reunited group as: 'Post Nirvana.'
The performance was well received on social media, with one X user saying: 'Post Malone just stole the show at #SNL50 with that Nirvana cover. Holy s***'
Another added: 'He's mastered every genre of music but Post Malone was born to play Nirvana songs.'
While a third wrote: 'Post Malone fronting Nirvana wasn't something I realized how badly I needed to see.'
The concert, which was hosted by Jimmy Fallon, also saw appearances from Jack White, Miley Cyrus and Robyn.
Arcade Fire were joined by David Byrne and St Vincent for a cover of David Bowie's 'Heroes', Devo played with former Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen on drums, while Lady Gaga sang 'Dick in the Box.'

'The most beautiful rock star in history'

Of course it was all a bit gushy, but Harry deserves the kudos. My favourite contribution came, almost inevitably, from Courtney Love, who suggested, tongue in cheek, that Harry was a 'huge influence on all of us natural blondes out here.' She also called Harry 'the most beautiful rock star in history,' before having second thoughts. 'Actually, Debbie, you've got to share it with Kurt,' she said, a nod to Nirvana's late frontman and her own husband. 'Kurt and Debbie. Can you really honestly think of anybody in rock and roll history …?' Love began. And then found out she could. 'Stevie!' (I'm presuming Stevie Nicks, not Little Stevie, though it could be Stevie Wonder, I suppose.) 'OK,' she concluded, 'Stevie, Debbie, Kurt.' It's a decent shout, you have to say. But back to the politics. After the horror show that was the last Tory government (a malign bunch of utter incompetents, and that's me being kind) I'm pulling for Sir Keir, but, let's face it, he's not making it easy. To be fair he didn't have his troubles to seek. The economy is a mess, the world's at war. There are easier paper rounds. And he has been under the cosh from the get-go. The left pilloried him for not being Corbyn. The right - and most of the media are in this camp - didn't like him because, well, he wasn't Tory. And because he wasn't their favourite current thing in politics; what we might call the 'charismatic a***ehole' as in Farage and Trump. Read More: But even so, he's hardly knocking it out of the park, is he? As Starmer's Stormy Year (Radio 4, Monday) reminded us, the last year has been one of U-turns, rebellions (currently ongoing), alienating your core voters, and shockingly poor public messaging. The programme saw the BBC's chief political correspondent Henry Zeffman talk to some in the Starmer government, union leaders, civil servants and Moneybox's Martin Lewis to compile a report card on the Prime Minister's first year in office. 'Must do better,' was the main takeaway. In the plus column were the Prime Minister's authoritative handling of the Southport riots just weeks after coming into power, as well as his deft handling of President Trump and his support for Ukraine. As for negatives, well, where do you start? The winter fuel debacle, the sacking of Sue Gray, the ongoing arguments over benefit cuts … The list goes on. As the Unite union's Sharon Graham pointed out, people voting for a Labour government were looking for change not managerialism. That change has been slow in coming. Or maybe it's just not getting reported. There was a progressive story to tell here: higher taxes to fund public services, workers' rights, renters' reform, clean energy investment. 'This is Starmerite social democracy,' Zeffman suggested. Read More: But it wasn't something he seemed that keen to explore himself. Instead, the programme cut to Rain Newton-Smith, the director of the CBI, to have a pop at it. Ah well. Still, this was a solid recounting of the first year of this Labour government; inevitably a bit Westminster bubbly and as much about personality as policy. But I can think of a few bigger BBC names who would have made a worse job of it. So far Starmer's report card is a bit C+. Maybe B minus on a good day. Not great, but then again not Truss levels of awfulness. That said, any government of whatever salt has to be a bit more ambitious than just being better than Liz Truss. Liz Truss Over on Radio 3 Erik Satie was composer of the week. On Sunday Feature, music journalist Jude Rogers explored Satie's influence on 1970s and 1980s pop - from Kate Bush to Ultravox and Gary Numan - and his pioneering role in ambient music, via his furniture music. Satie's work is familiar to all of us - even if you didn't realise it - through their use in cinema and advertising. His almost evanescent music is now everywhere. This was a lovely documentary full of gorgeous minimalist music from Satie and others. It felt like sinking into a warm bath of sound. Kate Bush But there was a bit of gravitas in there too. At one point Numan summed up the challenge that faced all creative people: 'The problem is you create something that becomes popular and then the world expects you to just stop then and just carry on regurgitating that. 'If you think about it, that's the very opposite of what creative people want to do. They want to create another thing and they hope it's as good or as successful as that one. But in a way it doesn't really matter as you are moving forward. You are forever trying to move forward.' A lesson for Sir Keir perhaps? She starts off by dropping in on the singer Charlotte Church who now runs a healing retreat in a valley in Powys.

Newly-single Post Malone suffers beer-fueled onstage blunder after tough split from girlfriend

Post Malone gave fans a serious scare when he suddenly took a nasty tumble off the stage during a recent concert — just days after calling it quits with girlfriend Christy Lee. The 29-year-old Circles hitmaker, who's currently embroiled in a custody battle with ex-fiancée Hee Sung 'Jamie' Park over their 3-year-old daughter, had only just ended his whirlwind romance with the younger stylist on Sunday. Post began dating Christy shortly after splitting from Jamie last November, making the sudden breakup all the more jarring for fans. Now, with the emotional drama seemingly weighing on him, the Grammy winner lost his footing mid-performance in Arizona — and it was all caught on video. In the viral clip, Post is performing his and Blake Shelton 's duet Pour Me A Drink with a red solo cup in hand. As he walks toward a fan near the front who's holding up a clear cup of what looks like beer, he crouches down to toast them — but things quickly go south. In the viral clip, Post is performing his and Blake Shelton 's duet Pour Me A Drink with a red solo cup in hand A section of the stage suddenly gives way beneath him, sending Post tumbling off as fans scream in shock. The stunned fan who filmed the moment later posted the footage online with the caption, 'I didn't mean to almost break your back.' Luckily, Post wasn't seriously hurt and powered through like a pro, going on to perform five more songs. On Sunday, sources told TMZ that Post Malone — real name Austin Post — quietly split from his girlfriend Christy just under a month ago. Whether the breakup was amicable remains a mystery. The pair first sparked romance rumors back in January when they were spotted on a cozy dinner date in Rome. In March they appeared in a TikTok video shared by a fan who spotted them at a bar. The pair put on a loved-up display, with Christy's hand was wrapped around the singer's arm as they sat at upper level of the venue. The White Iverson hitmaker is in a custody battle with his ex Jamie over their three-year-old daughter, who is referred to in legal documents as 'DDP.' In May he petitioned a court to hold the proceedings in Utah, with legal documents submitted by his attorney Laura Wasser stating that he is raising the child there. Park filed a similar request in Los Angeles County court, petitioning the court for primary custody, with the pop star getting nominal time. However, Post told the court that she strategically filed in Los Angeles for perceived advantages in the court battle. Wasser pointed out to the court that the exes' daughter has a number of essential ties to Utah. Listed among them was her nanny, pediatrician, music classes, physical education, and swimming. The Texas-bred musician announced the birth of his child in June 2022 without disclosing her name. At the same time, he revealed he was engaged to the baby's mother but kept his fiancée's identity private, with fans taking to calling her 'Jamie.' Throughout his short-lived romance with Christy, the performer and his then-girlfriend were spotted on multiple lavish outings in Europe and the states. In Park's court filing, she asked that her ex cover her legal costs. She also revealed that their daughter was born in May 2022. Sources previously told TMZ that Post filed for custody in Utah because he and Park had previously been splitting custody down the middle in the state. However, the insider added that it's also to his financial benefit, as Utah is less generous with child-support payments than California.
