Meet the jewellery designer dazzling the reality TV world – one ring at a time

Eagle-eyed Bravo viewers may know him as the man behind three different Vanderpump Rules engagement rings, or as the beleaguered best friend of disgraced reality television villain Tom Sandoval. But when Kyle Chan started selling handmade jewellery at the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk in 2010, he had no idea that he would one day parlay his small stall into a luxury jewellery business famous for its connection to the world of reality stars. Chan immigrated from Hong Kong to the US when he was 13, and started making jewellery after taking a class in high school. 'I fell in love with it, but I just didn't have the money to continue, so I started all kinds of odd jobs,' Chan said in a phone interview. 'I was a waiter. I was working at an airline. I did hair and makeup.' Eventually, he scored a job at a small jewellery boutique, which he managed for seven years before moving into wholesale. Then, in the early 2010s, he met Kyle Richards, the longtime star of the Bravo reality show The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills . It was then that his career really took off. 'She and her four daughters would always go to the Pasadena Rose Bowl Flea Market, so that's how I met her,' Chan said. 'She was very kind, and she would buy my jewellery, even though I would insist I'd give it to her for free. But she said, 'No, no, no, I'd like to buy it, I want to show support.'' When he graduated from making silver and gold-filled pieces into more luxury fare, she began carrying his designs at her since-shuttered Beverly Hills boutique, Kyle By Alene Too. Miley Cyrus, who Chan said was a frequent visitor at one of the small boutiques where his pieces were sold, also wore some of his designs. 'I told the sales girl, 'Whenever a celebrity comes by, whatever they want, they can take it, right?'' Chan said. 'But they said that Miley insisted on paying for everything.' Since then, Chan's work has been sold at more than 300 retail boutiques worldwide, and he's appeared on two Bravo shows and a Netflix show called Bling Empire . In 2021, he opened his flagship boutique, Kyle Chan Design, in Beverly Grove. Celebrities like Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Beyonce have worn his jewellery, and he designed a pair of earrings and a necklace worn by Emma Stone in La La Land . Much of Chan's initial success can be attributed to his connection to the reality television world. After meeting Richards, he ran into the cast of Vanderpump Rules at the opening of Pump Restaurant in West Hollywood in 2014. The show, which followed a cast of outrageously behaved 20-something servers at Sur, a restaurant owned by Lisa Vanderpump, known for her role in Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills , had just hit the air. 'I told them, 'If you need jewellery for season two, I can help,'' he said. 'So they would wear a few of my pieces. Back then, it was nothing expensive.' When members of the Vanderpump Rules cast started getting engaged, Chan designed custom rings for two of its biggest couples: Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney, and Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright (both couples have since filed for divorce). On a recent episode of the Vanderpump Rules spinoff The Valley , Chan was revealed to be the jeweller behind cast member Kristen Doute's engagement ring. Although they began as professional connections, many Bravo stars have become like family, Chan said. He said he was particularly close with Luke Broderick, Doute's fiance and co-star on The Valley, as well as with Sandoval, a Vanderpump Rules star who, in 2023, was revealed to have cheated on his girlfriend with a mutual friend in what was quickly nicknamed 'Scandoval'. When Sandoval fell out with many of his longtime friends over the affair, Chan was frequently filmed showing up to his parties and playing the role of supportive bestie. 'People will always just go, 'Why is he everywhere?'' Chan said, referring to his reality television ubiquity. 'And I'm like, 'I just happen to be friends with them.'' In addition to his reality television connections, Chan's unique approach to marketing has allowed him to stand out in the old-fashioned world of jewellery sales. 'When I was working at retail and wholesale, I realised that a lot of jewellery stores worked their whole lives struggling and had no identity because they just needed to get by. "Anytime when there's an economic crisis or anything, jewellery stores are always the first to suffer.' Chan did not want his business to endure a similar fate, and saw his celebrity customers as a unique way to grow his empire. His approach to luxury jewellery is loud, as opposed to the quiet luxury trend of recent years, and on his website, you can shop for pieces by which celebrity has worn them, including Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton and Nicki Minaj. His next project, a bedazzled bottle of whiskey he will be releasing in collaboration with the brand Gold Bar, is equally flashy. Despite all of the celebrity connections, Chan believes his success can be largely attributed to not letting Hollywood change him. 'All these years, I just choose to stay true to myself and be genuine and people can feel it and it's contagious,' he said. 'When I see a good person, I collect them, and I keep them in my orbit.' – ©2025 The New York Times Company This article originally appeared in The New York Times.

Anna Faris teases joining Real Housewives cast nearly seven years after Chris Pratt divorce

Anna Faris has considered joining the Real Housewives franchise. The 48-year-old actress - who was previously married to Chris Pratt - revealed that she would 'take the call' if Bravo boss Andy Cohen approached her to join the highly-popular reality franchise. Anna told Us Weekly recently: 'I was thinking the other day if I would make a good Real Housewife. 'I think I'm way too boring. I don't know if I'm too nice. I really think I would wear everything on my sleeve. I think I would blurt out all the time … I don't know if I would put on the whole pretense of 'there's no cameras.' I don't know. I don't know.' As she has acted professionally for nearly 30 years, she questioned if she could actually be herself in front of the camera for the sake of reality television drama. She explained: 'I feel like, fundamentally, I can be pretty quiet and reserved in my own skin. 'But it would be really fun to play a character on a reality show.' But if push comes to shove, she revealed to the weekly that she 'would totally take the phone call' from Cohen if ever asked to join the show and especially if it was for The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills. However, she questioned her ability to hang on-screen with the likes of Kyle Richards, Dorit Kemsley, Denise Richards, and Erika Girardi as she said: 'But they're so advanced. 'That's like going to graduate school when you're a freshman.' This comes just a month after Anna made some rare comments about the 12-year-old son, Jack, whom she shares with ex Pratt. 'He's handled the situation with the fires well,' the Mom alum told Us Weekly last month regarding how her child handled losing their home during the LA fires earlier this year. 'I really appreciate that,' added the star. While speaking during the push to promote her partnership with the bathroom cleaner Scrubbing Bubbles, the actress went on to reveal that she feels 'so lucky' to have Jack at her side. I think I would blurt out all the time … I don't know if I would put on the whole pretense of 'there's no cameras.' I don't know. I don't know' 'He's always had such a solid anchor,' she said in another interview with People. 'I don't know where, being a kid in Hollywood, he got that.' She added, 'I don't know how he got so down-to-earth, but I'm really grateful.' Faris and Pratt, 45, separated in 2017 and eventually finalized their divorce the following year after being married since 2009. Despite ending their romantic relationship the former couple have tried to remain close as co-parents for the benefit of their son, who they welcomed in August 2012. They have both moved on and have gotten married again: Faris tied-the-knot with cinematographer Michael Barrett in 2021, while Pratt wed Katherine Schwarzenegger in 2019, and have since welcomed three children of their own. But, just some two months ago, their blended family lives turned tense and scary when they were forced to evacuate their homes in their respective Pacific Palisades neighborhoods in Los Angeles as the deadly fire tore through the area in January. In the end, Pratt's home with Schwarzenegger was spared, however, Faris' house was left in a pile of rubble. In fact, the Scary Movie star's residence turned out to be one of 18,000 homes and structures that burned in the L.A. wildfires, which mainly comprised of the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire. 'He's always had such a solid anchor,' The Mom alum told People about son Jack, now 12, 'I don't know where, being a kid in Hollywood, he got that'; Jack is pictured with Pratt in 2023 On top of the loss of the home she shares with her son, Jack's school was also destroyed, Pratt reported an Instagram video at the time. 'It's surreal and has been tough, [but] we feel fortunate because we're safe,' Faris explained to Us, before adding, 'I'm really grateful to be working.' In addition to the cleaning campaign with Scrubbing Bubbles, Faris has also been able to focus on her work shooting the upcoming comedy film Spa Weekend, alongside co-stars Leslie Mann, Isla Fisher, and Michelle Buteau. Her other new roles include a voice spot in the animated comedy film Toy Story 5, starring Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, and the live-action animated film I, Object that features Karl Urban, Jemaine Clement, and Skywalker Hughes. Faris, a Baltimore, Maryland native, had her breakout role when she starred in the horror-comedy parody film Scary Movie (2000). She went on to appear in the next three sequels in the film franchise through 2006. Her other notable roles include The Hot Chick (2002, Lost In Translation (2003), Brokeback Mountain (2005), Just Friends (2005, My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006), Smiley Face (2007), The House Bunny (2008), What's Your Number? (2011), The Dictator (2012), and Overboard (2018), along with her eight season run in the hit CBS sitcom Mom (2013-2021).

Teddi Mellencamp's Sister Justice Calls Her 'The Strongest Person' In Update After Brain Tumor Surgery

Teddi Mellencamp's sister, Justice Mellencamp, has provided an update on her well-being after she underwent brain tumor surgery. Justice's update came after Teddi's estranged husband, Edwin Arroyave, updated fans following her surgery, revealing that it went well. Teddi shared devastating news about her health last Wednesday, revealing doctors found multiple tumors on her brain, which required surgery. Justice took to her Instagram Story to post a heart-wrenching update about her sister's surgery. She shared a black-and-white photo of her watching Teddi as she slept on her hospital bed. In the post's caption, Justice described her sister as the "strongest person" she knew. The 40-year-old wrote, "Watching a loved one suffer is horrific. I've tried to get back to everyone who has reached out & I know Teddi will share her journey when she is ready." Justice added, "She is by far the strongest person I know. So many emotions as I travel home today but her village is the best one I've ever seen and I'm grateful for them! Your prayers are everything. Thank you." Justice's update came a few days after Teddi's estranged husband Arroyave eased fans' worries by revealing her surgery "went well." Arroyave posted a brief but positive message on Instagram Stories in response to several concerned fans' inquiries about his estranged wife's well-being. He wrote, "So many people asking for updates. All I will say right now is surgery went well." However, Arroyave shared that he had never seen Teddi "in so much pain." He added, "She's finally getting some needed rest," before concluding, "I know she is so grateful for the outpouring of love." Teddi filed for divorce from Arroyave in November 2024, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason. The estranged couple shares three children: daughters Slate, 12, and Dove, 4, and son Cruz, 10. On February 12, Teddi revealed she would undergo an operation to remove tumors found on her brain. In a post on her Instagram page, "The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills" alum, who has always been open about her health struggles, wrote, "For the last several weeks I've been dealing with severe and debilitating headaches." She added, "Yesterday the pain was unbearable and required hospitalization. After a CT scan and MRI, doctors found multiple tumors on my brain, which they believe have been growing for at least 6 months." The 43-year-old shared that two of the surgeries would be surgically removed on that Wednesday while "the remaining smaller tumors will be dealt with via radiation at a later date." The television personality also wrote, "I am blessed to be surrounded by my children, family, friends, doctors, nurses and surgeons who are doing everything possible to get me back into better health." She concluded, "Thank you to everybody who has reached out, and to everyone who has supported me along this journey." Hours after announcing she would undergo surgery, Teddi Mellencamp shared more updates on her Instagram Story. In one post, she shared a video of her friend shaving off her hair and wrote, "I'm gonna have this look on my bucket list." She added, "My best look. I hate to break it to my brother but once I'm allowed to wash my hair and it's not all spiky, I think I've taken you for a run for your money, Hud." Teddi concluded, "I'll see you tomorrow and we'll see who wore it best." The mother of three shared another Instagram Story update revealing that her friend Kyle Richards was with her as she prepared for surgery. Others who were present included Arroyave and country musician Morgan Wade. Teddi Mellencamp has been open about her skin cancer journey, using social media to raise awareness. After her 2022 melanoma diagnosis, she underwent multiple surgeries. Despite early-stage treatment, she was later diagnosed with stage II melanoma and required further procedures. In 2023, new spots prompted biopsies, and she partnered with the Melanoma Research Foundation to advocate for awareness. While setbacks like failed immunotherapy led to more surgeries, Mellencamp remained determined. Her story emphasizes the importance of early detection, health advocacy, and resilience, inspiring others to take proactive action regarding their well-being.

Former Real Housewives star Teddi Mellencamp reveals she has multiple brain tumours

Teddi Mellencamp, former star of The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills, says doctors have found multiple tumours on her brain. The 43-year-old American, who is the daughter of musician John Mellencamp, wrote on Instagram on Wednesday that she was undergoing immediate surgery to remove two of the tumours. She added the remaining smaller tumours would be dealt with via radiation at a later date. "For the last several weeks I've been dealing with severe and debilitating headaches. Yesterday the pain was unbearable and required hospitalisation," she wrote. "After a CT scan and MRI, doctors found multiple tumours on my brain, which they believe have been growing for at least 6 months." She said was "blessed to be surrounded by my children, family, friends, doctors, nurses and surgeons" and thanked "everybody who has reached out" and "supported me along this journey". The update comes after Mellencamp, who starred on The Real Housewives for three seasons, revealed she'd been diagnosed with stage two melanoma in 2022. She has had regular treatment to remove the skin cancer. After sharing her statement on Wednesday, Mellencamp posted a video of herself having her head shaved ahead of the surgery, saying her dad had told her: "God only gives hard stuff to those of us who can handle it." In another video, she was surrounded by friends and family minutes before she was expected to go into surgery. Kyle Richards, who is still in The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills cast, was among those present.
