World Environment Day: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta announces 280 electric buses
Speaking to ANI, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the Delhi government plans to add 280 electric buses by 2027.
'We have decided to give 280 electric buses to Delhi. By 2027, the whole fleet of buses provided by the Delhi government will be electric. We are also bringing in a new EV policy,' she said.
CM Gupta praised the new buses, calling them a tremendous asset for Delhi and highlighting their high comfort level and security features.
She said, 'These buses are a tremendous asset for Delhi. This is a highly comfortable bus. Cameras and a panic button have been installed inside the bus. The buses have a low floor and are air-conditioned.'
CM Gupta criticised previous governments, saying, 'The previous governments never paid much attention to the environment. Delhi was deprived of the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign under the last government. Our target is to plant 70 lakh trees this year.'
Meanwhile, Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav praised the central government's efforts to curb vehicular pollution through smart EV and hydrogen buses.
He said, 'The Central government is regularly working on the problem of vehicular pollution... This new campaign for smart EV and hydrogen buses is a huge step in this direction.'
He noted, 'Under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, around 109 crore people planted nearly 140 crore trees yesterday.'
Yadav also highlighted PM Modi's symbolic tree plantings in recent years and called the gift of electric buses a step toward purifying Delhi's air.
Regarding the tree-planting campaign, Yadav noted, 'Under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign, around 109 crore people planted nearly 140 crore trees yesterday. This year, PM Modi planted a Banyan sapling. Last year he planted a Peepal sapling. His gift of electric buses to Delhi will surely work to purify the air in Delhi.'
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off 200 electric buses under the Delhi government's sustainable transport initiative.
He also planted a tree under 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative. Delhi LG VK Saxena, CM Rekha Gupta, Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav and Delhi Cabinet minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa are also present. (ANI)

Kolkata gang-rape: BJP fact-finding team recommends central agency probe
A BJP fact-finding team has recommended a probe by a central agency into the gang rape of a law student in Kolkata, claiming the state police's way of handling the case raises suspicion of attempts being made to save the culprits. The four-member team comprising BJP MP and former Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra, and former Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi, besides Satya Pal Singh, submitted its report to party president J P Nadda here on Tuesday. Sharing with the media the findings of the BJP panel, Singh said there were questions on the registration of the case and its investigation by the Kolkata Police. He alleged that the handwritten complaint submitted by the victim had been tampered with to remove the names of the accused she had mentioned. "Police erased the names of the accused that the victim had given in her handwritten complaint and put in letters J, G, S, M in place of those names. When the police have tampered with the complaint itself, which is the basic document in the case, how can one hope that the victim and her family will get justice?" He said the committee has recommended that either a probe by a central agency be initiated or a high-level independent inquiry by persons of repute be instituted to ensure justice to the victim and her family. Mishra claimed the Kolkata Police Commissioner (Manoj Jha) was evasive in his reply when the enquiry committee asked him to clarify why names were erased and some letters were put in their place. The Kolkata Police's actions, like "tampering with the FIR and swift arrest of four accused", raise a big suspicion, he said. Singh said the BJP committee noted growing atrocities and crimes against women in West Bengal and police inaction in many such cases. "There is a total collapse of law and order in West Bengal," he said. Slamming the ruling Trinamool Congress over the law student's gang-rape, Deb demanded that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee take responsibility for the incident. "She has no right to continue in her post," he said.

Mumbai Police detain MNS workers protesting over language row
Thane (Maharashtra) [India], July 8 (ANI): Mumbai Police on Tuesday detained several Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers who were protesting against traders for allegedly not speaking Marathi. The protest was part of a larger controversy surrounding the use of language in the city. MNS workers had gathered in the Mira-Bhayandar area to protest against traders who they claimed were not speaking Marathi. The police had earlier denied permission for the rally, citing intelligence inputs and potential law and order issues. Despite this, the MNS workers went ahead with their protest, leading to their detention by the police. Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar Police Commissioner Madhukar Pandey stated that the police had detained some people and appealed to the city's residents to cooperate with the police. The police had suggested an alternative route for the rally, which the MNS workers had refused to accept. 'Based on the High Court's instructions, we stated that you can take permission to hold rally, but change the route. We also had some intelligence inputs, based on which we made this decision. We have detained some people, and I appeal to the city's residents to cooperate with the police,' Pandey told ANI. The controversy began when some traders in Mumbai were allegedly attacked by MNS workers for not speaking Marathi. The MNS had been demanding that traders and shopkeepers in the city speak Marathi, leading to tensions between the two groups. The police have been working to maintain law and order in the city and prevent any further escalation of the situation. The MNS has been advocating for the use of Marathi in public places and has been critical of those who do not speak the language. The party's chief, Raj Thackeray, has been vocal about the need for people to learn and speak Marathi, especially in Maharashtra. MNS workers protested in the Mira Bhayandar area at Mira road in Thane earlier today, protesting the now rolled back order of the Maharashtra government mandating Hindi language to be taught in primary schools. MNS leader Avinash Jhadav was also detained by the police for protesting at Mira Road. Notably, Maharashtra Minister Pratap Baburao Sarnaik broke ranks with his government and came to Mira Bhayandar to support the MNS protest against traders over the language row. But instead of a warm welcome, MNS workers called him a traitor and forced the minister to leave the spot. The minister had no choice but to leave as the crowd grew agitated. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the administration asked them to take an alternate route, to which they did not agree. Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis said, 'It would be wrong to say that we did not permit the protest at Mira Road. I have spoken to the commissioner, who told me that the Police did not refuse permission for the protest.' (ANI)
