More than 200 Air India plane crash victims identified
Policemen carry the coffin of former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who died in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. (AP pic) AHMEDABAD : More than 200 victims of the Air India jet crash have been identified through DNA testing, Indian authorities said Wednesday, inching towards ending an agonising wait for relatives. There was one survivor out of 242 passengers and crew on board the London-bound plane on Thursday when it slammed into a residential area of Ahmedabad, killing at least 38 people on the ground. Distraught relatives have been providing DNA samples to help identify their loved ones, in a painstakingly slow process. 'As of 2pm, 202 DNA (samples) have been matched,' Harsh Sanghavi, home minister of Ahmedabad's Gujarat state, wrote on X. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner erupted into a fireball when it crashed moments after takeoff, with witnesses reporting seeing badly burnt bodies and scattered remains. Indian authorities are yet to announce the cause of the crash and investigators from Britain and the US have joined the probe. Investigators are aiming to retrieve vital information from both black boxes recovered from the site – the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder. India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau upgraded a laboratory this year where black boxes can be analysed. Following the crash, the civil aviation regulator ordered inspections of Air India's Dreamliners. Initial checks on the fleet 'did not reveal any major safety concerns', the regulator said late Tuesday. 'The aircraft and associated maintenance systems were found to be compliant with existing safety standards,' it said.

Photos and videos circulating on social media show towering plumes of thick black smoke rising from the crash site. The plane, identified as a 12-meter-long Beechcraft Super King Air , reportedly lost control moments after takeoff before crashing and bursting into flames. — sarcastic_us (@sarcastic_us) The London Southend Airport said in a post on X, "We can confirm there has been a serious incident at London Southend Airport this afternoon involving a general aviation aircraft. We are working closely with the local authorities and will be able to provide more information as soon as possible." So far, officials have not disclosed how many people were onboard or the aircraft's intended destination. As a precaution, nearby facilities including a golf club and a rugby club were evacuated. The airport suspended operations following the crash, with at least four Sunday afternoon flights cancelled, according to its website. Air India plane crash On June 12, Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. It struck a hostel building of BJ Medical College, killing 241 of the 242 people on board, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. A 15-page preliminary investigation report into the disaster revealed fuel-control switches of the two engines moved from the "run" to the "cutoff" position, within the space of one second, leading to immediate loss of altitude. In the cockpit voice recording, one pilot is heard asking the other why he cut off the fuel. The other denied having done so. The report by Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AIIB), released early on Saturday, neither concluded any reason for the switches moving nor apportioned explicit blame for the crash.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash Vijay Rupani, 68, was among the 275 people killed when the London-bound Air India flight crashed into a hostel complex in Ahmedabad moments after it took off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12 afternoon. The deceased included 120 men, 124 women, and 16 children. One person survived the tragedy. The lone survivor was identified as Indian-origin British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh who was returning to the UK with his brother Ajay Kumar Rakesh, 45, who was in a different row inside the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Meanwhile, the preliminary report from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on the Air India crash was released on Saturday. While it has answered a critical question on what led to the crash just minutes after the flight took off from Ahmedabad airport—cutting off of fuel supply to the engines—it has left many unanswered questions. A month after his death in Ahmedabad air crash, former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani's ashes immersed in Haridwar
Even as he immersed the ashes of his late father and former Chief Minister of Gujarat Vijay Rupani in Haridwar Friday, Rushabh Rupani said he felt the loss of the rest of the families whose near and dear ones died in the AI 171 crash on June 12. Vijay Rupani was one of the 241 passengers on board the Air India plane who died after the flight crashed on the BJ Medical College hostel mess, minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad airport, killing another 19 people on the ground. Speaking with The Indian Express on phone, Rushabh (29), who is a mechanical engineer and works at a start-up on wireless sensors in the United States, said, 'We are thankful to PM Narendra bhai (Modi) and Home Minister Amit bhai (Shah) for their constant and unwavering support.' Rushabh said the family had already immersed some ashes of his father in Somnath while the remaining was carried to Haridwar in Uttarakhand. 'My father had immense regard for Haridwar and Rushikesh,' he said. Ahead of the former CM's 69th birthday on August 2, his family and friends have launched an initiative to collect memoirs, in written, oral or video format, from various sources and people who came in touch with him and whose lives he touched. Rushabh said that while this collection will enrich their memories of his father, the family is yet to decide on how to put those recollections out on a public platform. 'The accident was heart-wrenching and unimaginable. Our feelings are with the families of all those who have died in the accident. And we pray to God that the families come out of the loss,' Rushabh said. Vijay Rupani was on his way to London where his daughter Radhika lives, to join his wife Anjaliben who had already reached there with the rest of the family, when the tragedy struck. On his personal loss, Rushabh said, 'I cannot express it in words. It is a great loss. He was a mentor and a pillar of support for the family. I always used to get inspiration from him on how to face circumstances firmly without being moved by emotions. He was my idol and a mentor not only in terms of financial aspects or family matters, but spiritually as well. He was a great listener. After his death, we have got support not just from Rajkot, but from across Gujarat and even from Punjab where he was the (BJP's) party in-charge.' Rupani's mortal remains were identified days after the plane crash and he was accorded state honour by the Gujarat government.
