What It Takes to Keep Those Family Reunions, Picnics and Funfetti Cupcakes Going

The Walker family gathers on a hilltop family farm in West Virginia every July, sleeping in tents and trailers. Cousins sit beside the campfire, eat biscuits and gravy and French toast in the morning and roast marshmallows in the evening. The kids run around. The parents talk. Ginger Walker Lilly's dad started the tradition more than 50 years ago, and she and her 36 first cousins kept it going after her parents died. Now that she is 78, her sons and the second and third generation of cousins are taking over more roles to make sure it continues for their kids and grandkids.

Brother of former MLB pitcher Tyler Walker missing along with other family members following Texas floods

Several family members of former MLB relief pitcher Tyler Walker remain missing on Tuesday as the death toll surpassed 100 following the devastating flooding that took place in central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend. Mark Walker, 51, his wife Sara, 50, and their 14-year-old son, Johnny, have been reported missing after vacationing at a river house in Hunt, Texas, along the Guadalupe River, which was devastated by the Kerr County flood on Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported, citing family. Mark is the older brother of former San Francisco Giants reliever Tyler Walker. "I'm sick to my stomach," Kathy Walker, the mother of Mark and Tyler, told the outlet. "It's a terrible feeling, because you're helpless here." Kathy told the San Francisco Chronicle that she last spoke to Mark on Thursday. The couple's 16-year-old daughter, Ellie, was attending camp at Camp Waldemar and has since been found safe. According to the report, Tyler and his wife traveled to Texas to be with their niece. Tyler Walker played eight seasons in the major leagues, spending the majority of that time with the Giants. He compiled a 23-18 record, 4.23 ERA, 34 saves and 243 strikeouts. As the search for the Walker family continues, officials in Texas confirmed on Monday that the death toll reached 109. Deaths have been reported in six Texas counties — Kerr, Burnet, Travis, Kendall, Williamson and Tom Green — FOX Weather reported. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said Tuesday, "As of 8 a.m. central time, 87 deceased have been recovered in Kerr County, including 56 adults and 30 children." He added that identification is still pending for 19 adults and seven children. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Footy star reveals his young son confronted rival who body-slammed him at halftime in one of the craziest acts the NRL has seen

Footy superstar Cody Walker has revealed his young son once confronted Lachlan Lewis over one of the NRL 's most bizarre and controversial moments. Back in 2021, Lewis escaped with just a fine after he opted to strangely body slam Canterbury playmaker Walker at half-time during his side's 32-24 defeat by the Bunnies in Round 18. The half-time buzzer had already gone and players were beginning to leave the pitch, when Lewis approached his opponent from behind, grabbed him and spun him into the ground. A brawl ensued, with Walker's team-mates flying in to back up their halfback. Several Canterbury players stood around looking perplexed at Lewis' antics, while Doggies coach Trent Barrett shook his head in disbelief as he watched on from the coaching box. But in another very funny and bizarre twist to the tale, Walker, 35, revealed on The Unfiltered Show that his young son had confronted Lewis in the team hotel after the match. 'The funny thing, after that, was we were all staying at the same hotel. Bulldogs, Souths, Parra, Warriors and Canberra,' Walker told the podcast. 'And my son, right... he's got no filter. He talks to anyone and he is a maniac. He actually questioned him [Lewis]. 'He goes: "Why'd you tackle my dad for?"' Walker, who was in hysterics, couldn't remember the full exchange but revealed that Lewis had approached him about it afterwards. 'He goes: "Your son actually came up and questioned me..."' Walker said, giggling with laughter. Walker and his partner Nellie have two sons together, Kian and Kade. 'It just sort of simmered the whole thing down, we just had a bit of a laugh about it,' he added. 'It was quite a funny experience when you think about it,' he added on the body slam. 'It sort of gave us an edge a bit because he got sin-binned after that and then we ran 'em over then.' 'It was strange.' At the time, Walker was reluctant to reveal what had been said between the pair, but when pressed again on their exchange on the podcast, he revealed their conversation was actually quite mundane. 'I'm not sure if you remember correctly but I made a bit of a break down the sideline to finish the half,' Walker said, recounting the moment. 'I sort of stepped back in and Will Hopoate tackled me and I think Lachlan Lewis was on top. 'Something happened, I can't remember. 'He grabbed me or touched me or something and I was just said: "Don't f***ing touch me!" 'It was when we were all getting off each other and I can't remember what happened. Then he just said: "What did you say?" Walker then repeated himself, before adding: 'Then he just grabs me! 'That was it. If you hear that story, it wasn't anything in particular. 'I held onto the ball,' he added laughing. 'I tried to grab him and I'm holding onto the ball, I don't know why I'm holding onto the ball.' At the age of 35, Walker is now one of the oldest players in the NRL, behind Daly Cherry-Evans and Mark Nicholls, and is showing no signs of slowing down. The Rabbitohs club legend began his professional NRL career with the Bunnies back in 2016 and has since gone on to return 100 tries over 220 games. Lewis, the nephew of NRL legend Wally Lewis, went on to play 43 times for the Bulldogs between 2018 and 2021 before being delisted by the club. His contract was torn up by the club after he had attempted to sell a sound speaker on eBay that was gifted to clubs by the NRL during COVID. No NRL clubs subsequently enquired on his availability, meaning Lewis is not made an appearance in the NRL since. Despite that, Lewis went viral back in 2022 after sharing a heartwarming clip of himself and his daughter Halli on his TikTok account.

Castle Rock approves controversial Pine Canyon development, annexes Colorado land into town

Hundreds of homes will be coming to Castle Rock as part of a controversial development called Pine Canyon Ranch. Up until now, the proposed Pine Canyon development was in unincorporated Douglas County but was surrounded by the town of Castle Rock. For decades, it has been a cattle ranch belonging to the Scott and now Walker family. CBS The land is located on both the east and west sides of Interstate 25. To the east, it is north of Scott Boulevard, south of Black Feather Trail, west of Founders Parkway and east of Front Street. West of I-25, the property is east of Prairie Hawk Drive, south of Highway 85 and bisected by Liggett Road. At a Tuesday night meeting, the Castle Rock Town Council voted to annex the land into the town of Castle Rock and approve its development plan and zoning. This has been a controversial development, with neighbors saying they worry about its impact on traffic and town resources. But the public was notably absent from Tuesday night's meeting, as originally there was no public comment scheduled. CBS After the vote, landowner Kurt Walker spoke to CBS Colorado on camera for the first time. "What's the next step for you guys now?" CBS Colorado's Olivia Young asked Kurt Walker, Pine Canyon project manager and sixth-generation landowner. "Take a breath!" Walker replied. It's the yes Walker and his family have been waiting 20 years for. "It's been a very, very long lead-up, multiple decades. We're excited and relieved to have this chapter closed," Walker said. Most recently, Walker sought approval for the development through Douglas County, which drew outcry from neighbors and the town of Castle Rock itself, citing concerns that the development would develop solely off nonrenewable groundwater and would tax town resources without supporting them. Ultimately, county commissioners directed the applicant to meet with the town of Castle Rock, and after months of moving through the town's process, the land Walker's family has ranched for the last 150 years will soon be officially a part of Castle Rock. It has also been greenlit for development. "As of today, we get to be part of the fabric of the town itself and we are darn excited about integrating into the town," Walker said. The proposed Pine Canyon Ranch will include 800 single-family homes, 1,000 multifamily homes, open space and commercial space, which could include a hotel and spa. Many community members have said it's too much. "I'm worried about the traffic on Founders," said Laura Cavey, Castle Rock mayor pro tem. "I would love to see a little less density and some real focus on the traffic." "Nobody wants a hotel there. Everybody I talk to thinks it's a bad idea," said Castle Rock Town Councilmember Mark Davis. Echoing those concerns, three town councilors voted against the development plan. "I cannot vote yes," said Castle Rock Town Councilmember Tim Deitz. "We have one shot to do this right. Basically, I don't like the fact that we would piece-meal it." CBS But with four councilmembers voting yes, the development plan and zoning regulations passed. The annexation passed unanimously, and a final motion to approve annexation, a vested property rights agreement, and vesting site development plans passed 6-1. The only no vote was Councilmember Deitz, who said at times he felt the town was being "held hostage" in this process. "They're giving us all of our groundwater and we'll be able to keep our sanitation process safe going forward," said Kevin Bracken, Castle Rock town councilmember. Bracken voted yes on the development plan, saying he was not willing to risk having the development move through the county. He and other councilmembers said it would be a "bait and switch" to reject the proposal now. "We've worked really hard and done our due diligence to make sure it's done in the town of Castle Rock," said Jason Gray, Castle Rock mayor. "There are some things we don't love about this. At the same time, we do love that it's in the town of Castle Rock and not the county." Walker, pledging to listen to those concerns, as development begins: "We very much appreciate those comments and we look forward to working to do exactly what was said, which was work together to find the solution that works for the entire community," Walker said. While the project has been greenlit, the approval won't be formally official for 30 days. A town spokesperson said: "The annexation and zoning for Pine Canyon was approved by Town Council. There is a 30-day referendum period that starts now. Following that, the applicant will provide all of their signed mylars and agreements to the town for recording. Every project is different on when final documents are signed and submitted to the town. This typically ranges from one to six months from when the annexation and zoning was approved. The annexation and zoning are effective once all final documents are signed and recorded with the Douglas County Clerk and Recorder's Office." This approval is just the first step of a long development process. Next, site development plans will be submitted for approval. The developers say they will look at doing an updated traffic study as part of this process.
