Does 'Raj' in Yash Raj Films stand for Rajesh Khanna? The partnership that wasn't

Gautam Chintamani's 'Dark Star: The Loneliness of Being Rajesh Khanna', a story told through the actor's cinematic marvels and misses, includes an intriguing anecdote - one that may change how you look at Yash Raj Films (YRF).One of India's biggest film production houses, YRF was founded by Yash Chopra, known for directing classics, and revolutionising Bollywood's idea of romance. And it all began with 'Daag: A Poem of Love' (1973).advertisementStarring Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore and Rakhee in the lead roles, 'Daag' was Chopra's directorial debut under his own production banner. That Khanna and Chopra didn't collaborate again for over a decade despite the roaring success of the film is a well-known fact. What remains lesser known is the depth of their creative bond before the legendary fallout. As mentioned in 'Dark Star', Chopra had already established himself as a promising director but had worked only under his brother Baldev Raj Chopra's banner, BR Films. Yash Chopra wanted a fresh start, and in Rajesh Khanna, he saw that beginning. According to a section of the industry insiders, their rapport during the making of 'Daag' was so strong that they reportedly decided to co-produce the film. An excerpt from the book reads:The film also went on to create an urban legend that remains one of the Hindi film industry's most romanticized myths. According to a cross-section of people from within the industry, especially Khanna's close confidants, Rajesh Khanna and Yash Chopra had an unofficial agreement that 'Daag' would be a co-production between the two. Even though Yash Chopra, like his brother Baldev Raj Chopra, was officially Yash Raj Chopra, the presence of 'Raj' in Yash Raj Films banner is believed by many to stand for 'Rajesh' (sic). Even with Chopra's proven talent, the project may not have taken shape without Khanna's book further states: "If stories are to be believed, the circumstances in which Yash Chopra started his production house were far from rosy. It had been a decade since he started directing, and all his films had been for BR Chopra's production house, and it was Khanna, along with producer Gulshan Rai, who helped Yash in more ways than one when he decided to go independent (sic)."Khanna's presence in the film helped Yash put the project together with less difficulty than it otherwise might have entailed, because when 'Daag' was beginning to be filmed, Khanna was at the peak of his popularity. The falling out between Khanna and Yash Chopra following 'Daag' that resulted in the actor not featuring in any of the director's ventures over the next decade and a half, and Khanna teaming up with BR Chopra, add to the mystery surrounding the whole issue. But the perceived veracity of his tale depends largely on which side one chooses to view the whole affair from, as the bigger the myth, the more sides a story tends to have in the world of Hindi cinema (sic). What led to the rift between them remains a mystery. Chopra, in later interviews, hinted that he didn't want to deal with Khanna's infamous "tantrums," Khanna, on the other hand, claimed Chopra would make him work unnecessarily long hours."Regardless, the success of 'Daag' should have ideally inspired a creative partnership between Rajesh Jhanna and Yash Chopra, who had seen a successful collaboration with 'Ittefaq' too. But that wasn't meant to be (sic)," Chintamani it was not just Chopra's journey that Khanna played a role in. According to the book, Khanna is believed to have discovered the iconic writing duo Salim-Javed. But like Chopra, they too eventually drifted away.'Dark Star' notes:And while Chopra went on to helm 'Deewar' which, in a way, sealed Khanna's fate, Khanna not only had to be content with seeing Yash collaborate with the very man who would take away his crown, but was also at the receiving end of the wrath of Salim-Javed, the writing duo he practically discovered (sic). Rajesh Khanna, the first superstar of the Hindi cinema, died on July 18, 2012 in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife, Dimple Kapadia, and daughters, Twinkle and Rinke Khanna.- EndsMust Watch

Bollywood's ‘Zohra Jabeen' who worked with Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Karan Johar quit industry over disrespect; nobody from industry attended her funeral

For anyone who has watched Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, the image of Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan's affectionate grandmother may come to mind. If not that, then surely the kind-hearted daadi to Kajol's character in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge will strike a chord. And even if those don't ring a bell, fans of Yash Chopra's timeless classic Waqt will remember the elegant woman who played Balraj Sahni's wife, the one for whom the iconic song 'Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen' was picturised. That woman was none other than veteran actress Achala Sachdev, a stalwart of Indian cinema whose career spanned decades and who shared the screen with some of the biggest names in the industry. Born on May 3, 1920, in Peshawar, Achala's life was marred by the loss of her father when she was just six years old. Achala grew up watching her single mother struggle to educate and marry off her three elder sisters in trying circumstances. However, Achala made a vow: she would marry only when she becomes independent and self-reliant. Her journey into the world of performance began with All India Radio in Lahore, where she participated in radio dramas. After the Partition, she relocated to Delhi with her relatives and joined AIR Delhi. At the age of 20, she was offered a role in the film Fashionable Wife, in which, coincidentally, she played the role of a mother. Despite her youth, she accepted the part, making it her debut in cinema. Achala's first performance was well received, but it came with a caveat, she was quickly typecast in motherly roles. Reluctant but committed to her craft, she continued taking on such roles while maintaining her job at All India Radio. The 1950s saw her work in critically acclaimed films like Mother, Rahi, Footpath, Chandni Chowk, Naukri, Azad, Miss Mary, and Adalat. But it was in 1965, with Yash Chopra's Waqt, that her career reached a defining moment. The song 'Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen', picturised on her, became a cultural touchstone, immortalising her presence in the annals of Indian cinema. Over the years, she collaborated with legendary filmmakers and co-stars: Raj Kapoor in Sangam and Mera Naam Joker, Rajesh Khanna in Andaaz and Daag, and later Sridevi in Chandni. While she found success professionally, Achala's personal life was far from smooth. She married Gyan Sachdev, an assistant director, and they had a son, Jyotin. But the marriage was troubled, marked by frequent fights. Eventually, the couple divorced, and Jyotin later moved abroad, leaving Achala to face solitude. She was also said to share a deep bond with actress Meena Kumari. However, when rumours surfaced accusing her of being interested in Meena Kumari's wealth, Achala distanced herself. Reports also suggest she grew uncomfortable with aspects of Meena Kumari's personal life, which became a topic of gossip, prompting her to end the friendship. Years later, during the shoot of a Yash Chopra film, Achala met Clifford Douglas Peters, a foreigner who had lost his wife. The two bonded over shared loneliness and eventually got married. Achala moved to Pune, where Clifford ran a factory. Later, they settled in Hadapsar. Sadly, Clifford passed away a few years into their marriage, once again leaving Achala alone. One of last notable appearances was as Kajol's grandmother in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. But behind the scenes, Achala was growing increasingly frustrated with the film industry. Despite her punctuality, she often had to wait long hours for lead actors to arrive. Tired of the lack of professionalism and respect, she made the decision to quit acting. As her health declined, Achala took a final step toward securing her future. She donated her flat to the Janseva Foundation, with the condition that they care for her until her last breath. In 2011, she suffered a fall in her kitchen, fracturing her leg and sustaining head trauma. A CT scan revealed multiple blood clots in her brain. She was left paralyzed and blind. On April 30, 2012, just days before her 92nd birthday, Achala Sachdev passed away. Despite her decades-long contribution to Indian cinema, not a single film industry personality attended her last rites. Only her son flew in from the US to bid her farewell, accompanied by around 40 people, including a few relatives and friends. Amitabh Bachchan and Ekta Kapoor paid tribute to her publicly, but beyond that, her departure was met with an unsettling silence from the industry she had devoted her life to.

THIS blockbuster earned ₹27 crore, starred 3 superstars, all of them died one after another

Many Bollywood stars have passed away due to illness or health issues, leaving fans shocked and heartbroken, especially when their deaths were sudden and unexpected. One such emotional memory is tied to a romantic blockbuster which released 36 years ago, in 1989. Made by legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, it was the film Chandni which became a massive hit and ruled the theatres across India. It starred Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna in the lead, who are no more today. Besides them, the film also had Waheeda Rehman, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Mita Vashisht, and Manohar Singh in key roles. Not only the storyline and its star-studded cast, the film is still etched in the hearts of the audience, thanks to its music, cinematography and dance performances. Chandni, released in 1989, was a major box office success. The film reportedly earned ₹ 27.2 crore, which is equivalent to approximately ₹ 291 crore in today's time. It was a huge success, considering it was made on a budget of just ₹ 8 crore. Undoubtedly, the film was a turning point for both Yash Chopra and the cast. Chandni starred three big names, the three superstars of the time —Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, and Sridevi, who delivered unforgettable performances of their lifetime in the film. Unfortunately, all three passed away around the same time. In fact, they died one after the other. Vinod Khanna died on 27 April 2017 after hospitalisation in Mumbai. He died due to bladder cancer at the age of 70. After Vinod, came the tragic news of Sridevi's death. Sridevi passed in 2018 under mysterious circumstances in Dubai, where she was with her family for Mohit Marwah's wedding. The Chandni actress was found dead in her guest room at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel in Dubai, UAE. The cause of her death was cited as accidental drowning. Just two years later, Rishi Kapoor lost his long fight with cancer in 2020. After completing his treatment abroad, Rishi returned to India before COVID-19 cases surged in the country. He was admitted to Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital on 29 April 2020 after complaining about breathing difficulties. He passed away the next day from a recurrence of leukaemia. Even Chandni director, Yash Chopra, also passed away earlier in 2012. The cause of his death was said to be dengue, just before the release of his final film Jab Tak Hai Jaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma. Despite the loss of the cast, Chandni remains one of Bollywood's most loved romantic films.
