York police locate convicted sexual assaulter who had gone missing
York police are searching for 32-year-old Ryan Vandenakker, of Newmarket, who is convicted of three counts of sexual assault involving separate victims. Police say they've located a man from Newmarket who had gone missing after being convicted of multiple sexual assaults. In a release on Sunday, investigators with York police say 32-year-old Ryan Vandenakker was convicted of three counts of sexual assault involving separate victims. The offences occurred between 2018 and 2021, according to police. They say Vandenakker was reported missing on July 24 after failing to appear at the Superior Court of Justice in Newmarket for his sentencing. Despite his absence, police say Vandenakker was sentenced to seven years in prison. Police had issued a warrant of committal, along with a warrant in the first for his arrest. They say Vandenakker was found on Sunday in Orangeville. He's now facing additional charges of fail to appear and fail to comply with a release order.

Roof ripped off car in single-vehicle King Township crash, driver hospitalized
A man sustained life-threatening injuries following a single-vehicle collision in the Township of King last Friday, York Regional Police said in a news release Tuesday. The vehicle was found deep in a forested area with the roof completely ripped out, after officers responded to reports of a black sedan that went off the road near 16th Sideroad and 7th Concession around 7:30 a.m. Nobody else was injured, police said. The driver was alone in the vehicle and was transported to a trauma centre in Toronto. Anyone with information is asked to contact York police.

Male suspect wanted after shots fired at Vaughan business: police
Police are searching for a lone suspect after a Vaughan business was shot at earlier this week. Police are searching for one suspect after a Vaughan business was shot at earlier this week. York police say the shooting took place on July 17 at around 2:15 a.m. in a plaza near Centre Street and Westminster Drive. One person arrived in a white sedan, exited the vehicle, and fired multiple shots at an establishment before fleeing westbound on Centre, according to police. No one was injured. Investigators are searching for a Black male, about six feet tall, with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie, white undershirt, black pants, black shoes, and a black face mask. Any witnesses, or anyone with video or dashcam footage, are asked to contact police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7441, or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Teen cyclist charged in collision with vehicle in Vaughan, Ont., police say
A teen cyclist has been charged after colliding with a vehicle while riding the wrong way down a bike lane in Vaughan, Ont., police say. The collision happened around 3 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Beverley Glen Boulevard and Dufferin Street, York police said in a news release. When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a white vehicle in the right-turn lane of Dufferin Street, on the northbound side, and a damaged bicycle nearby. Police said the cyclist, 17, was already being treated by paramedics for minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured. Police found that the teen had been cycling south in a northbound bike lane, without a helmet. Bicycle helmets are legally required for cyclists under the age of 18 in Ontario. The 17-year-old has now been charged with careless driving and operating a bicycle without a helmet, police said. In the release, police reminded road users that cyclists are subject to the same rules and responsibilities as motorists under the Highway Traffic Act. They urged cyclists to:
