The Dallas Mavericks made the move that had been long expected. Ever since the team won the NBA Draft lottery with a 1.8 percent chance, they had been expected to draft Duke star Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick.
On Wednesday night, that move happened. Flagg is now a member of the Mavericks and will be looking to help the franchise turn back into an NBA Finals contender.
After trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of the trade deadline last year, landing Flagg was a major stroke of luck. Nico Harrison has been given a second chance to get things right.

Now, the question becomes, how will Dallas use Flagg?

During his college career with the Blue Devils, Flagg played forward. However, in the NBA, it's possible that the Mavericks could look to play him at another position.
That is exactly what minority owner Mark Cuban is wanting to see. He wants to see Flagg play point guard and plans to let head coach Jason Kidd know that.
As shared by Noah Weber of The Smoking Cuban, Cuban spoke out on the matter in a recent meetup with the press.
"I'd send a text to J-Kidd, point guard, point guard, point guard, let him bring the ball up," Cuban said.
He also said that the team is "going to have the biggest team in the NBA."
Flagg has true generational talent. Should he reach his full potential, Dallas will have a very special player on its hands. Cuban knows that and he also knows just how wide of a skill-set the 18-year-old comes with.

In the 2024-25 college basketball season with Duke, Flagg played in 37 games. He averaged 19.2 points per game to go along with 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.4 steals, while shooting 48.1 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from three-point range.
All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what plans the Mavericks have in store for Flagg. They could look to play him at point guard or they could simply let him play his natural position of forward.
Regardless of where they play him, Flagg is going to be one of the most watched players in the NBA during the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Knicks Under Fire Over Head Coach Search After Jason Kidd Update

Knicks Under Fire Over Head Coach Search After Jason Kidd Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Knicks are on the receiving end of criticism following the surprise firing of Tom Thibodeau. The veteran head coach left the team after five seasons, posting a 226-174 record (24-23 in the playoffs) and leading it to back-to-back 50-plus-win seasons. Advertisement Thibodeau took the team back to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years, but the Indiana Pacers stopped their remarkable run with a 4-2 win. A couple of days later, the two-time Coach of the Year award recipient was dismissed. The team started looking for a replacement shortly after, and the front office reportedly focused on several coaches already employed around the league. Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Wednesday that the Knicks' request to interview Jason Kidd, currently with the Dallas Mavericks, was strongly denied. They additionally reached out to the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Houston Rockets to ask permission to interview Chris Finch and Ime Udoka, respectively, but their attempts weren't fruitful, either. Former New York Knicks head coach Tom ThibodeauVincent Carchietta-Imagn Images The latest update on Kidd raised several eyebrows on social media. Many fans criticized the team for firing Thibodeau without apparently having a clear plan to find his replacement. Advertisement "knicks don't know what the hell they doin," one fan wrote. "So they fired Thibs with essentially no plan…" another fan said. "Sounds like they really thought this out," a third fan sarcastically said. "This is a bad look on Dolan and Leon Rose…" a fourth fan added. "From an optics perspective, it makes @nyknicks look like a joke. Patently, no firm plan for any one candidate & no proper contingencies in place," a fifth fan wrote. "Knicks strategy is reaching out to teams current head coaches," a sixth fan said. There are still good coaches like Michael Malone and Taylor Jenkins unemployed out there, but the Knicks' front office has taken a different route. The offseason just started for them, and perhaps new opportunities will come, but fans aren't happy with their current approach. Advertisement New York has a solid team that showed it can contend, but if it fails to find the right piece to coach it, the disappointment will continue. Fans Link Knicks Player's Cryptic Post to Lonzo Ball Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Josh Hart sparked a lot of reactions with a cryptic message on social media. The New York Knicks could have a busy offseason, again, following an Eastern Conference finals elimination against the Indiana Pacers. New York is still looking for a new head coach, while free agency opens, but they have been mentioned in multiple trade rumors. The Cleveland Cavaliers, who beat the Knicks in their regular-season series (4-0), landed a solid guard on Saturday. Lonzo Ball is heading to Cleveland after the 2016 NBA champions sent Isaac Okoro to the Chicago Bulls. This message made a lot of fans think that he was referring to the Ball trade. The majority of comments suggested he was talking about Bulls' general manager Arturas Karnisovas, while others thought he was taking a jab at Leon Rose, the Knicks' GM. Advertisement "word, LONZO SHOUDVE BEEN A KNICK," one fan said. "Bro talkin bout Leon lmao," another fan said. "Bulls front office," a third fan said. "Bros talking about the Bulls GM," a fourth fan added. "Traded bro for peanuts lol," a fifth fan wrote. "Tell Leon to wake up big bro!" a sixth fan said. Warriors' Giannis Antetokounmpo Dream Not Dead After Latest Insider Update

Warriors' Giannis Antetokounmpo Dream Not Dead After Latest Insider Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A lot of people had given up hope on the idea of Giannis Antetokounmpo requesting a trade away from the Milwaukee Bucks this offseason. Shams Charania believes it is too early to rule it out entirely. Advertisement The Greek Freak has spent the entirety of his career in Milwaukee to this point. The initial silence gave those following the situation an early impression that it was going to continue that way. However, this may just be the calm before the storm. Teams like the Golden State Warriors should still have every reason to monitor the situation as it develops in Milwaukee. Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Adams-USA TODAY Sports Charania appeared on Get Up for ESPN (h/t Bleacher Report) on Thursday morning. The NBA insider expressed that if a deal gets done for Antetokounmpo, it could take some time. "[There's] a lot of observing," Charania told viewers. "He's been there for 12 years, so there's going to be that equity given to the Bucks to see what they do during the draft week, free agency week." Advertisement Charania continued, "How much can they improve this team in their moves? He said it, he wants to compete for championships. Can the Bucks make those championship moves? His future, I've said it for the last few weeks, it won't be tied to the draft, it won't be tied to free agency." The biggest hint dropped about when the dominos could start falling for this situation was included in the following statement. Charania mentioned, "If there is a resolution on Giannis Antetokounmpo, it could be later in the summer." This puts potential suitors like the Warriors in a tricky position. Putting all the eggs into the Antetokounmpo basket could limit overall roster upgrades that can be done in the meantime. Advertisement If the Warriors really believe as though they have a shot here, it would be wise to pursue it. Finding a cautious middle ground where upgrades can still be made while positioning themselves for the looming pursuit can be challenging, but ultimately worthwhile.
