Mum buys two drinks and three tapas in Benidorm and is floored by the price
A British expat who has spent most of her life in Benidorm has revealed just how far under £20 can get you in certain parts of Benidorm if you are thirsty and hungry A pint of beer, a glass of wine and a selection of food may be a costly endeavour in many restaurants – but one mum in Benidorm has uncovered a new 'bargain' deal while visiting one of her favourite pubs. Michelle Baker has lived in the British tourist hotspot for over 40 years and the expat used to run a newspaper in the region. She now shares useful information on her Benidormforever Facebook page. And the mum, who has raised her children in sunny Spain, shared her latest food and drink find. Speaking about the new offer at Baldo, which is based by the Benidorm Beach hotel, Michelle enthused on Facebook: 'I love this new brunch deal at Baldo Benidorm; a trio of tasty tapas including the CUTEST mini paella, DELICIOUS'mussels a la vinaigrette' & the CRUNCHIEST pork crackling… 'It comes with TWO drinks - choose from wine, sangria, beer or a soft drink and the whole thing costs just 20 euros - about £17! 'A perfect lunch to share (or keep it all to yourself ) the 'Tapas Time' deal is available every day up until 5pm and is a great introduction to the wonderful world of Spanish 'tapas' - plus the perfect opportunity to try paella if you've never had it!' Michelle added that it was one of her favourite places in the whole of Benidorm and praised the atmosphere, great food, beer and cocktails, the latter being available on a two for €12 deal (approx £10). Writing under the post, one person said: 'Can't wait to try here in September.' Another wrote: 'Baldo Benidorm is fabulous, we did the bottomless brunch in June and it was well worth the money – lovely food and great choice of drinks, would highly recommend.' A third said: 'That looks great value.' And a final comment read: 'In June this year we did the brunch at Baldo and it was honestly amazing. The food was amazing and the service was perfect. I think we had about 7 cocktails each in the time given so if anyone's looking to book a brunch I highly recommend Baldo you won't regret it.' For anyone jetting off to Benidorm for some sun this summer, Michelle has previously offered top tips, while also revealing the most common mistake Brits make on day one of their holidays. Speaking to the Daily Star, she urged people to avoid being a 'first day fool', and explained: 'They get here, the measures are so massive, they set foot on the street and they say 'Oh beer is €2 a pint, let's have seven straight away'. If you can, just look around and see what the locals do, they have lived here a long time. Drink in the shade and drink water along with your alcohol." She added: "I'm not saying don't drink alcohol, that's ridiculous, but drink water alongside it because alcohol dehydrates you. And if you are travelling with families, keep an eye on the kids. The kids will spend the day in the pool and they won't feel thirsty so it is up to you as a parent to keep topping them up."

Beware! Ignoring The ‘No Sex' Rule After Turkey Hair Transplant Can Lead To This Risk
The boy from Wales flew to Turkey to get his hair transplant done for free. Medical surgeries often come with some precautions to follow post-treatment. The Turkish hair transplant procedure also has a list of rules that should be avoided for a specific period. However, a 24-year-old influencer has recently ended up breaking one of the rules, resulting in a swollen face. As per Daily Star, Ruben Owen, who recently had his Turkish hair transplant, was advised to avoid any strenuous activities that could lead to sweating. This meant that he could neither sunbathe nor work out or have sex for two weeks. Flouting the 'no sex rule' led to his face blowing up like a balloon. Talking to the daily, he said, 'I wake up and my head's blown up like a balloon—face puffed, scalp tight, and it looked like I'd been stung by 100 bees." The boy from Wales flew to Turkey to get his hair transplant done for free. Reportedly, this was some kind of barter collaboration where Owen had to do clinic modelling in exchange. While the surgery was successful, his mistake during the post-surgery phase led him to one of the biggest troubles as soon as he came back to Wales. 'I didn't quite listen about the sex part," he admitted. Waking up to a swollen face scared Owen, who feared getting an STI. He immediately used Google to see if his symptoms matched with any STI. However, after figuring out what had really happened, he immediately regretted ignoring the doctors' advice. He was relieved after being told that the swelling would go down eventually. 'I looked like something out of a film. It was something else," the influencer added. It took seven days for the swelling to settle down. Ruben decided to get the transplant done at the age of 22, worrying about his receding hairline. He flew out to Turkey in November 2022, which cost him nearly $1,078 (£800) for his round-trip flights. He was back to Wales within a day of the procedure. Turkey has become a popular destination for individuals to get cut-rate cosmetic procedures. The cheap prices might sound attractive to many but may lead to high risks in a few cases if there are complications. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Toddler stung to death by swarm of wasps as brave dad tried to save him
Two-year-old Narathip was playing with friends in Thailand when the deadly insects struck — he died in hospital of a severe allergic reaction while his dad is fighting for his life A two-year-old boy tragically lost his life after being attacked by a swarm of aggressive wasps while playing with friends in northeastern Thailand. The toddler, Narathip, also known as Akhin, was cycling with other children near an old rice mill when they were suddenly set upon by the territorial insects in Nakhon Ratchasima on Saturday. While the other kids managed to escape, Narathip was unable to make it too far due to his short legs and tumbled from his bike as the wasps relentlessly attacked him. His playmates quickly sought help, leading his father to the horrific scene. The determined dad braved the stinging swarm to rescue his son, enduring numerous painful stings himself. Despite being rushed to Bua Yai Hospital, the toddler devastatingly succumbed to his injuries six hours later. Medical professionals stated that he suffered a severe allergic reaction, which led to a rapid heart rate, acute kidney failure, and ultimately "cardiac system failure". The boy's father is currently in a critical condition following the ordeal, reports the Daily Star. Following the tragedy, local officials coordinated with exterminators to incinerate the wasp nest, found hanging beneath a metal structure in the rice mill's yard. Pitakpong Sirisak, a Provincial Council member, commented on the aftermath: "Since the incident, I've received more than 10 calls to destroy wasp nests and we've already coordinated with rescuers to remove four of them. I urge residents to carefully check their homes as well as nearby trees and electric poles for wasp nests. "If you spot a newly made nest, destroy it right away. But if it's already fully developed, don't risk it and just report it to the authorities for safe removal." Wasp stings can prove deadly, particularly for those who are allergic, with fatalities typically occurring due to anaphylactic shock — a severe, swift allergic response that can trigger airway swelling and cardiac arrest. Even in non-allergic individuals, multiple stings from hostile species can result in toxic reactions and organ failure. Previously, there was the harrowing case of two-year-old Beckham Reed, who was left battling for his life in hospital following a similar wasp assault. The toddler was playing with his cousins on an electric toy when he disturbed a nest of yellowjackets, which "swarmed him head to toe". His parents Mariah and Peyton rushed him to hospital, where medics administered morphine and Benadryl before discharging him home. Less than 24 hours later, Beckham's skin began turning yellow, forcing his frantic parents to race back to the hospital. Medical staff at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick swiftly recognised that Beckham was experiencing multi-organ failure. He was immediately transferred to the ICU at Memorial Savannah. Upon arrival at intensive care, Beckham required dialysis, ventilator assistance and crucial IV medications to allow his body to recover and eliminate the toxins. "Due to his age and size and the amount of stings he had, his little body was unable to handle the amount of toxins in his body," Tiffany Hewatt penned on a GoFundMe page. It's believed that Beckham was released from hospital in mid-July following a challenging recovery period.

Paul Weller shares terrifying moment he was attacked by lion on the way to a gig
The former frontman with The Jam said he was getting a lift in his dad's pal Ronnie's van - who kept the beast as a pet Paul Weller has revealed he was attacked by a lion whilst travelling to a performance. The ex-Jam frontman revealed he was hitching a ride in his father's mate Ronnie's van - who housed the wild animal as a companion. John Weller had enlisted his friend's help when his son's group needed transport to a Surrey show, with the big cat already aboard. Paul, 67, explained: "Yeah, I mean, it wasn't fully grown at that point. "Yeah, so Ronnie would drive the van and the lion would sit in the passenger seat. You couldn't get too comfortable, though. "You had to watch that. Because one time, we were sitting in the back and I leant on the back of the passenger seat. Next thing I know, the f***ing lion's gone for me. "He f***ing went for me! I nearly s*** myself, man. Attacked by a lion!". The You Do Something To Me vocalist said he had to endure another journey with the creature on the return trip. He quipped: "Well, Ronnie just dropped us off and came back later. With the lion, yeah.", reports the Daily Star. "He kept it for a few years and then I think he had to give it up because it was getting too big... you know, once the neighbours started disappearing.." Paul also told Uncut magazine that whilst he continues releasing fresh material, he's content to step back from live performances for the time being. The Modfather said he's cherishing precious moments with his second wife Hannah and their three youngsters John Paul, Bowie and Nova. He confessed: "I'm just enjoying spending more time with the kids and the feeling of not panicking every morning, waking up and thinking, 'Where are we tonight?', stomach churning. "I just need a break from that. You know what? I just think it'll always be like that. I was talking to Johnny Marr and he said the same thing. Every time you wake up, you're anxious and prickly." Only last month, there were reports of a large predatory cat lurking near Ed Sheeran's rural retreat. The 'Perfect' singer resides in this secluded spot with his wife Cherry Seaborn and their two daughters. However, a black panther-like creature was sighted in the countryside, alarmingly close at less than five miles from Sheeran's estate. A local managed to capture the creature on their mobile phone camera. The sighting occurred in the town of Eye, situated north of Ipswich in Suffolk. Matt Salusbury, who curates the Big Cats of Suffolk website, relayed: "The witness told me they'd seen a large black animal walking up and down along the tree line at the end of a field behind their garden. "The distance from where they were to the animal when they photographed it was a good few minutes walk. They observed it for more than five minutes before it sat down with its head up." The images depict a sizeable, dark figure skulking by the trees. Then, the mysterious animal disappeared from view. This eerie encounter took place on April 23 but has only recently been disclosed. In an earlier incident, growling noises had been heard around Mendlesham, a village in the vicinity.

Bangladesh puppet theatre uses fun to teach kids real-life lessons
DHAKA, Bangladesh (Daily Star/ANN) — Growing up, most children develop a certain fondness towards fictional characters. Cartoons, puppets or comics — they serve the same purpose. To entertain, to teach, and to play a vital role in the psychological development of the children. Presently, puppets may not be as popular as they used to be. And puppet shows are a dying art to some extent. Standing against such challenging odds, Kaktarua Puppet Theater is doing some commendable work. What is Kaktarua? A kaktarua, meaning "scarecrow," is an effigy created in human form made out of hay or straw, dressed in old clothes, and often a hat. A scarecrow is erected in order to scare away birds from a farmland and to protect crops. "Similarly, Kaktarua Puppet Theater aims to work by driving away all the negatives and superstitions from society. Hence, the symbolic name," said Asaduzzaman Ashik, the founder who started working with puppets in 2016, but it wasn't until 2019 that he established the theatre. The Puppets There are at least 30 different puppet characters that are used in different shows. Some of these are original characters, created by the members of the theatre. Some of them are based on mythical stories and used to recreate those tales. Others are based on the stories from the Bangla book of primary school, created in order to play out the stories from the books, so the children can learn by watching the puppet shows. "It's one thing to just read. But if you can integrate the lesson in a show, children love that, and this can be a way of teaching. Apu and Dipu'r Golpo is one of our most popular shows, and it teaches children about the demerits of fighting and quarreling," said Ashik after one of his shows where his team had just performed. The team is ten members strong, with Muhammad Aminul Islam Rasel making most of the puppets. The puppet and sound designs are done by Pronoy Sarker. The rest of the members work together to bring a show to reality. The puppet designs are sometimes inspired by the stories. Sometimes they are created based on the need of the story and show, and sometimes the team members just brainstorm and create a new look. Puppets for Palliative care and teaching "The reason I am still working with puppets is to bring joy to the children. I have had a few shows at CRP, NICRH and Dhaka Medical College. There were these children who were in so much pain and suffering. And I made them smile for a little while. By the end of the show, they wanted to shake hands with the puppets. This little girl, who had a cannula in her hand, reached out to me. And that is the moment that stuck with me," recalled Ashik when asked what his greatest achievement with the puppets was. "A lot of people are not aware of this, but puppets can be used as a palliative care and a tool to teach children. Their responses are amazing, and with more efforts into puppets, a lot more can be done for the children. Everyone is so engrossed in screens these days. We can use puppets to entertain them in a different way that is not confined to a screen," observed Ashik, pointing out that, as rewarding as the response is, the funding is very limited. The theatre can barely finance itself. Taking this as a full-time job would be next to impossible. With the rent for the studio, the expenses that go into the creation and maintenance of the puppets and the expenses of travel and others, it makes it a very difficult job to carry on, but Ashik has not given up. Impression As observed during a live show, young children are not only fond of but also interactive with puppets. And throughout the lesson delivered by the show, they remained interactive. This is a credit to the puppeteers as well as the fact that puppets are interesting to children. These shows can be a teaching mechanism, especially for children with special needs. With positive response from the children during different shows as well as organizations who work with children, Ashik and his team can see the potential for more elaborate shows and says he is just a phone call away for those who are interested in working with puppets or puppet shows. Nineties children grew up with puppets, and now those are little more than nostalgic elements. Similarly, bioscopes have gone extinct too. Kaktarua Puppet Theater has revived both of these things and is working to not only popularize them but also use them as teaching mediums. This deserves recognition and perhaps some attention from people so they can carry on the show. Because the show must go on.
