#SHOWBIZ: HK actor Sammy Sum once lived on RM27 a day
In a recent interview with fellow actress Lee San San on her YouTube programme, the 42-year-old disclosed that his monthly salary was once as low as HK$6,000 (RM3,243).
Of this, HK$4,000 (RM2,162) was spent on rent for a flat in Tsim Sha Tsui, leaving him with just HK$2,000 (RM1,081) to cover all other living expenses.
To make ends meet, Sum undertook part-time jobs, occasionally borrowed money from friends, and limited his daily expenditure to no more than HK$50 (RM27).
"I used to walk from Tsim Sha Tsui to this barbecue shop in Mong Kok to buy two meal boxes for HK$20 (RM10) each.
I was surviving on HK$50 a day," he recalled.
"As long as I had a bed to sleep on, I was fine. I could chase my dreams with a simple heart, and that alone made me happy."
Sum, who joined TVB in 2006, first gained recognition for his performance in the 2011 series Lives Of Omission.
His breakthrough arrived in 2014 with the crime drama Line Walker, which earned him a nomination for Most Improved Male Artiste at the TVB Anniversary Awards.
The actor subsequently signed an exclusive deal with Emperor Entertainment Group in 2022, after his TVB contract expired in July 2021.

Sorry, Sir! and Heart Of Greed . In 2016, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at TVB's Anniversary Gala. Sin Chew highlighted a 2021 article where Chow spoke candidly about death: 'I've acted for 60 years and died many times on screen. Death is most fair – it comes for everyone, rich or poor… Just because you don't talk about it doesn't mean it won't come.' He had expressed his hope to pass peacefully, ideally after enjoying his favourite meal. His final wish was for his ashes to be scattered in a garden, so he could nourish the earth and leave behind a legacy of love.

Suria KLCC's Picnic in the Park returns with vibrant festival
KUALA LUMPUR: Suria KLCC has reintroduced its celebrated 'Picnic in the Park' event, transforming it into a lively festival at the Esplanade KLCC and KLCC Park. Running until July 6, the event offers an urban escape with curated activities, dining, and entertainment. Francis Tan, executive director and CEO of Suria KLCC Sdn Bhd, highlighted the festival's evolution. 'Picnic in the Park is our way of celebrating shoppers with a unique city retreat,' he said. KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian actress Datin Seri Umie Aida, 51, whose full name is Umi Khalsum Rahmad Ali, was recently fined NZD400 (approximately RM1,024) by Biosecurity New Zealand after an undeclared apple was discovered in her handbag upon her arrival at Auckland Airport. The incident, which Umie Aida shared on Instagram Threads, occurred when a scanner at immigration detected the fruit. The actress admitted that the oversight was due to her own carelessness and viewed it as a valuable lesson. "I did not bring food to New Zealand because I wanted to avoid problems like this," she explained in a recent video posted to her social media. "But, while I was at MAS Golden Lounge at KLIA, I took the apple intending to eat it on board the flight." She further elaborated, "However, I fell asleep and forgot about the apple. When I arrived in New Zealand, and when the officers found it, I was immediately imposed a fine." Umie Aida emphasised the importance for all travellers to be mindful of the immigration regulations of the countries they visit.
