
WhatsApp Bans Over 98 Lakh Accounts In India In June Due To THIS Reason
WhatsApp also received 23,596 complaints from users in India. After reviewing them, action was taken on 1,001 accounts. This included banning some accounts and restoring others that were wrongly banned. Most of the complaints, about 16,069, were related to ban appeals. As a result, action was taken on 756 accounts. Other complaints were about account support, product-related issues, and safety concerns.
WhatsApp explained that it detects abuse at three stages — when an account is created, while messages are being sent, and when it receives negative feedback like user reports or blocks.
WhatsApp Focuses On User Safety
The company added that prevention is its primary focus, as stopping harmful activity before it happens is more effective than detecting it afterward. The platform emphasised its commitment to user safety, saying it uses end-to-end encryption, safety tools, and dedicated teams to fight abuse, misinformation, and security threats.
The Meta-owned platform also works with experts to promote cybersecurity and protect election integrity, the messaging platform said in the report. Meanwhile, last month, the messaging platform has introduced two new tools – 'Status Ads' and 'Promoted Channels'.
WhatsApp Features
According to WABetaInfo, these features were available to select beta users on Android. Status Ads work like Instagram Story ads. Now, business accounts can post paid content that will show up in people's Status updates. These ads will appear between status updates from friends and family, with a clear 'sponsored' label so people can easily spot them as ads. (With IANS Inputs)

Deepfake video used for share fraud: 5 held from MP, Delhi for siphoning funds via crypto route
Days after a deepfake video of a share trading expert was used to dupe a Pune businessman of Rs 54 lakh, the Pimpri Chinchwad police arrested five men, two from Madhya Pradesh and three from Delhi, allegedly for siphoning funds abroad to cyber fraudsters through cryptocurrency route. An FIR in the case was registered by the complaint who runs a kitchen products business. Recently while watching reels on Instagram, he came across a video of share trading and finance expert Rachana Ranade. Probe has now revealed that it was a deepfake video directing the viewers to a malicious platform. After the complainant clicked the link, he was directed to a WhatsApp group. Subsequently he was manipulated into downloading a fraudulent application which promised very high returns on investments. The complainant transferred Rs 54.6 lakh to fraudulent mule accounts between March 27 and May 9. And the corresponding profit on the fraudulent app was shown as Rs 2.52 crore — which was over 400 per cent of the investment. While trying to withdraw his 'profit', the complainant realised that he had been cheated. He approached the Cyber crime police station of Pimpri Chinchwad police and an FIR was registered on July 12. As the team from Cyber crime police station of Pimpri Chinchwad police launched a probe, they zeroed in on a particular bank account that had received Rs 10 lakh of the total fraud amount. The funds were further diverted into two accounts. All these three accounts belonged to an entity based out of Indore named Mahavir Enterprises. A team from the police station was sent to Indore and a suspect identified as Punam Mangilal Jain (42), who owns a cold drinks trade business, was arrested. Probe revealed that he had opened seven accounts in the entity's name and four of them had received funds from the cyber criminals. Police further arrested his accomplice Ganesh Punamchand Dhole (28), with whose help accounts had been opened. Investigation into the technical leads obtained from these two, led the investigation team to three suspects in Delhi who in fact operated these accounts as mule handlers and converted the money to Tether cryptocurrency to be sent to international masterminds. These suspects were getting their cuts from these transactions, a probe has revealed. The police subsequently arrested the three suspects from Delhi identified as Rajesh Jaiprakash Kushwah alias Rocky (28), Pradeepkumar Madanlal Ken (30) and Harshit Omprakash Ghotan (28). For more than a year now, the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad police have reported what their cyber investigators are calling an epidemic, a worrying surge in online share trading fraud cases. Fraudsters employ a variety of baits, including trading tips, virtual lectures, mobile applications, and enticing promises of exorbitant returns. The Indian Express had earlier reported that deepfake videos of stock market experts and industry leaders urging investors to join WhatsApp groups or download spurious trading apps were part of the evolving strategies of the cyber criminals perpetrating the share trading frauds. The video has raised concerns about American jobs being outsourced to other countries at a time when the anti-immigrant sentiment is at an all-time high. 'Do you need one room key or two room keys?' the virtual front desk employee asks Langs, who replies, 'Two, just in case I lose one.' The receptionist, speaking over a video call through the screen, issues further check-in instructions and generates the registration form. 'Miami virtual check in at hotels!' Langs wrote while sharing the video on TikTok and Instagram. The video was reposted on X, where it sparked outcry against Indians for 'stealing' American jobs. Although there is nothing in the video to indicate that the front desk employee is Indian or not living in the US, viewers surmised from his appearance and accent that he belongs to the subcontinent. 'Hire Americans' 'Miami hotel has outsourced their front desk to India. Guests are checked in virtually on video call with an Indian representative,' read the caption on X. 'More American jobs outsourced overseas. At some point this should just become illegal. If you make money in America, you should hire Americans'. The comments section of the video was therefore quickly flooded with outrage as Americans blamed Indians for taking jobs. Many people also slammed the hotel for outsourcing the front desk role to someone sitting outside the US. 'So American jobs are being taken by Indian people overseas AND AI at the same time. Two slaps in the face,' a user said. 'The irony is people will hate the Indians who are just doing a job while completely ignoring the American bosses and shareholders who actually made the decision to outsource these jobs in the first place,' another pointed out. 'It's up to people to actually walk out. The problem is these hotels are cheaper than everyone else because they're hiring outside the country,' a third added.
