East Kilbride 3 Bonnyrigg Rose 1: Elliott at the double as Kilby take big step towards realising SPFL dream
The Lowland League champions will take a two-goal lead to New Dundas Park next week
It's advantage East Kilbride in the League Two play-off final after a sparkling display in the K-Park sunshine gave them the upper hand over Bonnyrigg Rose.
The Lowland League champions have waited over a decade for a place in the SPFL, but they have taken a huge step towards that with a strong showing against their higher-ranked opponents.
EK made a lighting start in the first leg through Cami Elliott's second minute header, but former Kilby midfielder Aaron Arnott levelled for Rose after 16 minutes with a composed finish inside the box.
However, EK found another level in the second half and a second strike of the match from Elliott, plus a smart finish from Jordan McGregor after 72 minutes, has given Mick Kennedy's men a two-goal lead to take into next week's second leg in Midlothian.
Kilby boss Kennedy made just one change from the side that successfully saw off Brora Rangers in the Pyramid play-off last weekend, with Ian McShane dropping to the bench and Jordan McGregor coming back from suspension.
Rose - who won promotion from the Lowland League through the play-offs in 2022 - had some familiar faces in their ranks with Hibs loanee and ex-Airdrie man Murray Aiken and former EK man Arnott among the starters.
The hosts stated their intent very early on and inside 45 seconds John Robertson cut inside before he saw a thumping effort deflected inches over the top.
And from the resulting corner, Kilby took an early lead. Reegan Mimnaugh swung in a ball towards the back post and Elliott's looping header dropped into the far corner to get the hosts off to a dream start.
Six minutes in, Rose got their first sight at goal when Cameron Ross got in behind and his persistence paif off, with room eventually opening up for a shot. However, he pulled his effort narrowly wide from 18 yards.
Ten minutes later, the visitors pulled level in controversial circumstances. EK were screaming for a foul on Jordan McGregor out wide inside their own half, but referee Dan McFarlane waved play on and Rose capitalised. Kieran Somerville drove into the box and his cut back found Arnott for a composed finish into the bottom corner.
Kilby's frustrations continued later in the half and assistant boss Si Ferry was shown a yellow card after venting his anger at McFarlane's handling of the game.
On the stroke of half-time, Arnott forced Kilby keeper Chris Truesdale into his first real save of the match when Rose won a free-kick out wide. He curled an effort towards the far corner, forcing Truesdale to tip it behind.
Mimnaugh came to Kilby's rescue in 52 minutes when he headed Angus Mailer's header off the line and that proved a pivotal moment, as Kiby raced up the pitch and scored from the next attack. Great work from Flanagan saw him burst down the wing and he delivered a tantalising ball across the face of goal for Elliott to slide in and knock home from all of two yards.
Rose were still very capable and they had EK breathing another sigh of relief just moments later when a corner to the back post found Cameron Ross, but he headed over the top from just a few yards out.
EK went looking for a third and when Lewis Spence played a one-two on the edge of the box with skipper Jack Leitch, the former Accies man curled a fine effort inches wide of Patrick Martin's far post.
In 72 minutes EK added to their tally after some fine build-up. Mimnugh dinked the ball to the back post and Jamie Hamilton of all people produced a stunning scissor kick, which crashed off the crossbar and fell to McGregor to poke the ball home.
Jamie Hamilton and Sean Fagan both went close with back-post headers as the clock ticked down and Rose tried to cling on to keep the tie alive.
In the 90th minute Elliott almost grabbed his hat-trick but Flangan's driven cross just escaped his clutches in the six-yard box.
The sides will meet for the second leg next Saturday at New Dundas Park, kick-off 3pm.

Jurgen Klopp sends warning to Florian Wirtz and admits Liverpool fee is 'insane'
Florian Wirtz's move to Liverpool has smashed the British transfer record after the Reds agreed to pay a colossal £116million for the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Jurgen Klopp has warned new Liverpool star Florian Wirtz that his £116million price tag will put a target on his back. Wirtz, 22, has joined the Reds in a British record-transfer deal, signing a lucrative five-year contract. Liverpool fended off interest from Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to sign the Germany international from Bayer Leverkusen. Klopp's former club will pay Leverkusen a fixed £100m plus £16m in potential add-ons. Despite describing Wirtz as an 'outstanding player', the ex-Reds boss can't help but baulk at the fee. In an interview with German newspaper Welt, Klopp said: "There's no question about it, it's an insane sum, and one that a player at Liverpool is aware of if things don't go well for two or three games. "We all agree that we're talking about a great player here. I know I once said that I'm out if we pay 100 million euros for a player. But the world is changing. That's just the way the market is." The 58-year-old went on to hail Wirtz, who has the difficult task of improving the Premier League champions. "I don't know exactly which position Arne (Slot) has Florian in mind for," Klopp noted. "He's an outstanding player who can give any club something great. Whether he'll make the reigning English champions even better remains to be seen." It's not the first time that Klopp has commented on Wirtz's record-breaking move to Anfield. Speaking to German broadcaster RTL last week, Red Bull's head of global football operations said: "It will be really, really great. I'm sure of it. "It's very difficult to strengthen them when you're champions. But Liverpool have managed that. They've signed an exceptional talent in Florian Wirtz." Klopp will be able to get the inside track on Wirtz's progress thanks to maintaining a strong relationship with Liverpool. "We're in very good contact - with some of the players who write now and then or send the occasional photo from their holidays," he revealed to Welt. "The owners have become good friends." Klopp also joked: "I've also written to Arne now and then; we've only seen each other once. He was pleased with my gesture back then. And to be honest: when things started off so well under him, I briefly asked myself as a person whether I was happy that things were like this." Airdrie hero Adam Frizzell says he's left Diamonds in a good place as he looks back on four-year spell
The club captain departed last week for Derry City Former Airdrie skipper Adam Frizzell feels he's left the club in a good place, as he looked back on his four years in the Diamond. The 27-year-old signed for League of Ireland side Derry City last week on an 18-month contract that he said was 'too good to turn down', with the side chasing a European place. Frizzell's new team are currently over halfway through their season as Scottish football prepares for the big kick-off and he believes he has left the club on strong footing. The midfielder departs with plenty of fond memories of his spell in Monklands having captained the team to a long-awaited trophy in 2023 with their SPFL Trust Trophy triumph and also promotion in the same year. Asked about his favourite moment from his spell at New Broomfield, Frizzell said: "There have been so many. The first season I went in, we were excellent. We finished second [to Cove] but we won almost every game that season. We had a really good team. "In the second year, we won promotion which was unbelievable as well. "In the third year we won the cup and the club hadn't done that in a long time. To do that as captain was a massive honour for me. "There will be a lot better players than me that don't lift a trophy in their career so it will probably be something I appreciate even more when I look back. "Last year was a bit sticky, but we got there in the end and kept the club in the division. "That was massive for me. If I thought there was a chance of moving on, I wanted to leave the club in a really good place, which I think it is. "It is a really young, exciting squad and I am looking forward to watching them this season, supporting them from afar." Frizzell feels he is making a step up by moving overseas and hopes to get a taste of Europa Conference League football with Derry next season. He said: "I got a very small taste of it [playing in Europe] when I was very young playing for Kilmarnock and we went out in the first round to a Welsh team. "That's what you dream of when you're young and to be going and pushing for Europe was a big selling point. "Not only that but I don't think it would be disrespectful in saying that it's probably a step up in general. It's a really tough league now with a lot of good players in it. It was time for me to come over and challenge myself and I'm looking forward to doing that."

Major Lawrence Shankland update as Hearts jet out to Spain for pre-season training camp
HEARTS are jetting off to Spain this morning for their pre-season training camp WITHOUT striker Lawrence Shankland. Jambos boss Derek McInnes had hoped to persuade him to commit to the Tynecastle club in a further round of talks this week. But Del's discussions have failed to reach a positive outcome and further doubt over Shankland's future at Hearts has now grown. The 29-year-old is out of contract so free to move elsewhere and has options in both England and abroad. McInnes has been reluctant to put a timescale on when he needs the Scotland striker to make his mind up - but has warned he won't wait much longer. Advertisement He remains convinced staying put is Shankland's best option and has made several pleas to the ex-Dundee United and Aberdeen forward in an attempt to secure him for next season. But with the Jambos players flying to Spain early this morning without Shankland as part of the party, the chances of him signing a new deal appear to be plummeting. McInnes has already added striker Claudio Braga in this window, with Elton Kabangu's loan from USG made permanent. While the door on Shankland is unlikely to be closed completely on the back of his decision to stay put in Scotland, the Jambos are ready to crank up their search for his replacement in the coming days. Advertisement The striker was last sighted undergoing some additional pre-pre-season training in Dubai in the company of none other than Rangers captain James Tavernier. He's had a busy summer already, after tying the knot with his new wife Nicole at a plush Scottish wedding venue at the end of last month. Rangers transfer special including Coady latest, why Turgeman move could be off & why Shankland's a no-brainer He's also been linked with a move to West Brom in England. Links between him and Rangers have gone cold recently with a new broom at Ibrox since the Andrew Cavenagh/49ers Enterprises takeover, but the sight of Shankland training with Tavernier made many Gers fans curious enough at least to see if something could still happen on the transfer front.
