Shukla In space: Benefits far outweigh cost, says Isro chief

The Rs 548 crore spent on the mission is a fraction of what India would have otherwise needed to spend on replicating the same training, exposure and systems-level experience, Isro chairman V Narayanan told TOI, in his first exclusive interview about the multinational commercial mission. Speaking from Houston, Narayanan said that the learning outcomes — spanning astronaut training (for two astronauts), mission operations, and hardware-software-human interface — cannot be measured purely in monetary terms. 'For a country of 140 crore people, what we've spent is only marginal,,' Narayanan said. For that, he said: 'We've gained access to infrastructure and experience that would otherwise require thousands of crores.' If one looks at the per capita cost on the Indian population, it adds up to around Rs 4 per head. Look Beyond Rupee Figure Narayanan, dismissing observations that Ax-4 is 'just a commercial mission', said discussions on such strategic missions must be rooted in long-term capability building rather than short-term financial arithmetic. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Morocco: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo 'For a programme like Gaganyaan , which spans Rs 20,000 crore including follow-on missions, these early investments are necessary. Training, confidence, exposure, systems understanding — these are foundational,' he said. He added that maturity in public discourse is essential. 'People must recognise that not all benefits can be quantified. But they can certainly be measured in preparedness and capability,' he said. Five Takeaways Narayanan identified five key areas where Ax-4 will directly strengthen India's human spaceflight capabilities: Training exposure, confidence building, operational experience, systems-and-process understanding, and cross-disciplinary learning. 'Our astronauts trained in world-class facilities simulating space conditions, including microgravity and life-support systems. Each hour of training they've undergone would cost crores if we were to replicate the infrastructure ourselves,' he said. He added that interacting with seasoned astronauts — including those who have flown to space multiple times or performed several spacewalks — helped boost the confidence of Indian crew members and mission teams. Astronauts — Shux and his backup Group Captain Prashant Nair — learnt how to function in space as a team, handle real-time challenges, and carry out experiments. He said working on and observing the mission to ISS has given India insights into module design, layout, onboard systems, and processes that will feed into future Gaganyaan and space station designs. 'We will, of course, have our own design and technology, but all this experience will help us develop those better,' he said. Isro Engineers Narayanan, who is leading efforts to ensure astronaut safety, said he has himself gained from observing operations in Houston. 'From data handling to high-level system safety discussions, our understanding of the end-to-end process has grown. This cannot be acquired by simulation or literature review alone,' he said. He added that the experience is equally valuable for backroom mission teams and decision-makers, who will now have real-world references to draw upon while preparing for Gaganyaan. TOI had reported last week about some specifics the Isro team is learning back in Houston, where mission control for Ax-4 is. Space Station India plans to build its own space station after the Gaganyaan crewed flights. Narayanan said direct exposure to the ISS environment will inform the design, configuration, and operational planning of the proposed Indian facility. 'We had only studied the ISS on paper. Now we are seeing it in action. We may not adopt the same model, but this will help us make informed design choices,' he said.

Nothing Phone 3 launched in India, brings new Glyph interface and tweaked design

After months of speculation and rather free-for-all leaks, the Nothing Phone 3 is finally here. The company launched the Phone 3 globally at an event in London and it is coming to India, given that India is Nothing's key market, at the same time. The Nothing Phone 3 has been priced at Rs 79,999 in India for the base variant. The top variant is priced at Rs 89,999. Although, Nothing says with bank discounts and exchange bonus for some consumers the cost of the Phone 3 could be as low as Rs 62,999. The phone will be on open sale from July the Phone 3 has been priced at 799 Euros. Alongside the phone, Nothing has also launched the Nothing Headphone 1 in India. This has been priced at Rs 21,999 but is available for now at Rs 19,999 as part of launch offer. Globally, the Headphone 1 has been priced at 299 Nothing, the Phone 3 marks its foray into a more premium and flagship segment. Its previous top phone — the Phone 2 — had more modest ambitions. To match its new aspirations, the Phone 3 also comes with upgraded hardware and feature set. The Phone 3 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. It sports a 6.67-inch OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. The base variant comes with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The other variant has 16GB RAM and 512GB to the previous Phone 2, the Phone 3 comes with a revamped camera system. In total there are now three cameras — all powered by 50-megapixel image sensors. One of the cameras also sports a periscope lens with 3X optical zoom. In addition, the ultra-wide camera too uses a 50-megapixel image sensor. Inside the phone there is 5500 mAh battery and the phone uses Nothing OS 3.5 software that has been augmented with some AI features. The phone is also IP68 certified against water and dust protection, which should help its credentials in that this is Nothing we are talking about, another big change is around design. First, the old Glyph interface which used lights arranged in thin lines on the back cover is gone. Instead, the phone now uses Glyph Matrix, which is essentially a large circle on the top right of the back cover. Inside the circle there are dot-matrix lights — 489 micro LEDs — which are customisable and can function in the same manner in which Glyph Lights used to do. In fact, the Glyph Matrix is one of the key features of the phone, so much so that Nothing has even put a round button on a back to control it and cycle through its various big design change is the new camera module — or rather the lack of it. In fact, this is going to be a polarising aspect of the Phone 3. Unlike camera modules in other phones which are symmetric, Nothing has decided to break some rules and has given the Phone 3 a camera module where lenses are placed asymmetrically. It gives the phone a distinct personality, a kind of cool quotient that no other phone will possibly dare to match. But for some users it may come across too edgy or too out of line. Talking of camera module design, one nifty feature seems to be a red square that will glow whenever the camera is recording a noted earlier, Nothing Phone 3 is going on sale in India from Flipkart and a few other stores on July 15. Although, pre-booking for the phone starts from July 1. Nothing says that those who pre-book the phone will also get Nothing Ear free with the phones along with one year additional free warranty.- EndsMust Watch

Nothing Headphone 1 launched in India, limited time offer means you can get it for Rs 19,999

We have seen several earphones and TWS from Nothing previously. Now, the company has launched the Headphone 1, its first around-the-ear headphones in India. While the Headphone 1 has been priced at Rs 21,999 in India, as part of the launch offer, Nothing is currently having it up on sale at a price of Rs 19, this price, the Headphone 1 is a compelling and very strong launch from Nothing. If you want to know more about it, please read our full review of the Nothing Headphone 1 noted, this is an around-the-ear product. In other words, the Headphone 1 is a full-size headphone, going up against the likes of Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra. Although, unlike them, it is priced more aggressively. Nothing says that for the Headphone 1 it has worked with iconic audio brand KEF to tune its sound. 'The Headphone (1) marks an exciting new chapter for us — our first over-ear headphones, and a bold step forward in our mission to make technology feel more fun and inspiring,' Nothing CEO Carl Pei wrote in a note. 'From the transparent design to the intuitive controls and precision acoustics, every detail has been carefully considered to deliver more than just great sound. We wanted to create something that looks different, works differently, and invites you to connect with your music in a more personal way.'advertisementThe Headphone 1 looks like a Nothing product as it follows the company's tech-industrial design as well as elements like transparent cover and red accents. Inside, it houses 40mm drivers. The Headphone 1 supports head-tracking for spatial audio, offers active noise cancellation, and comes with the ability to simultaneously connect with two particular, the company has paid special attention to noise cancellation in the Headphone 1. 'Advanced hybrid Active Noise Cancellation uses dual feed-forward and feedback microphones to cut external noise effectively,' notes Nothing. 'It scans your surroundings every 600 ms, adapting in real time, while a dedicated wear-detection system tracks noise leakage between the ear-cup and ear canal every 1875 ms, ensuring consistent and tailored noise cancellation no matter how you wear it.'The Nothing Headphone 1 had been launched globally, and in India, at an event in London that also saw the launch of the Nothing Phone 3. Just like the Headphone 1, the Phone 3 is also going on sale today.- Ends
