Deputy PMs urge reflection and unity in Maal Hijrah messages
KUALA LUMPUR: The Islamic New Year of Maal Hijrah 1447 should serve as a renewed commitment to strengthening unity, cultivating compassion, and building a peaceful, progressive and resilient nation capable of facing any challenge, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said Awal Muharam, which marks the first day of the Islamic lunar year, is a significant moment for self-reflection, renewing resolutions, and reinforcing the spirit to continue striving for improvement as individuals, families, communities, and as a nation.
"God willing, may this new year bring abundant blessings, grace, and strength for us to move forward with confidence and trust in His plan," he said in a Facebook post today.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this year's Maal Hijrah theme, 'Membangun Ummah Madani' (Developing a Civilised Society), reflects the importance of upholding universal Islamic values for the greater and more inclusive benefit of society.
He said the theme fosters the development of a progressive society that is mindful of humanitarian aspects, social justice, unity, economic growth, and siyasah (governance).
"With the many crises and global challenges occurring today, we must also see this as a call to build a stronger Muslim society, one that is resilient and has a firm identity," he said.– BERNAMA

Continue Support, Expand K2K Programme
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, wife of the Prime Minister, has called for continued support and expansion of the Kita-Untuk-Kita (K2K) Programme to benefit more communities in public housing areas. The Bandar Tun Razak MP said the programme, launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in April 2023, is part of efforts to empower communities in People's Housing Projects (PPR) in a comprehensive and inclusive manner. She said the programme comprises four key components, namely community empowerment, co-management of public housing, economic and income enhancement, as well as advocacy and policy reform. 'Through the implementation of this strategy, more than 50,000 residents in the Klang Valley are now part of a wave of transformation that is making their communities more resilient and sustainable,' she said in her speech at a ceremony to celebrate the academic excellence of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students from PPR Taman Mulia under the programme here today. Also present were political secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Azman Abidin and K2K Programme director Dr Shahridan Faiez. Dr Wan Azizah said the PPR Taman Mulia community had chosen to implement the Free SPM Tuition Project under the K2K Community Grant Programme, which not only had a direct impact on over 40 students there but also strengthened the spirit of solidarity and shared responsibility. She said the project had received RM17,052 in funding through the K2K Community Grant, managed by Think City. 'With this funding, a total of 48 classes for core subjects were successfully conducted. In addition, learning facilities such as tables, chairs, printers and projectors were also provided to create a conducive learning environment even after the grant period ends,' she said. She added that the K2K Community Grant not only supports PPR Taman Mulia but also targets 10 public housing areas in the Klang Valley, with a total of 39 community projects worth over RM1 million.

Only Platform Providers Can Block Social Media Content And Accounts
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- The act of blocking or removing social media content or accounts can only be carried out by the platform providers themselves, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the government has no authority to instruct social media platform providers to take such actions, which are only carried out if the content or account is found to have violated the law. 'When a piece of content or an account is taken down or blocked, it means the platform acknowledges and complies with existing laws and believes that the content has breached those laws,' he said at a press conference after launching the Nadi Aspirasi Nasional Bersama Anak Muda (NANBA) programme here today. Also present were Community Communications Department (J-KOM) director-general Datuk Ismail Yusop and Batu MP P. Prabakaran, who is also chairman of the Special Task Force Committee for the Indian Community Transformation Unit (MITRA). Earlier, in his speech, Fahmi said 173,642 pieces of content had been taken down by social media platform providers from Jan 1 until yesterday. Fahmi, who is also Lembah Pantai MP, said 51 per cent, or more than 90,000, of the total involved online gambling, while over 43,000 were scam-related, with the remainder linked to other criminal activities. He said Facebook was identified as the platform with the highest number of online gambling and scam advertisements, followed by TikTok, while Telegram was found to be the weakest in managing scam-related issues. 'Of the content requested for removal on Telegram, half were scams, but the platform did not take down all of them. So we need to be firm with these platforms. 'Telegram representatives will be in Kuala Lumpur this week to continue discussions with MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission), covering, among others, scams, online gambling, child sexual abuse material, prostitution content, and copyrighted films or TV episodes previously accessible via various Telegram channels,' he said.

South Korea praises Malaysia's Asean Chair role in Myanmar crisis
KUALA LUMPUR: South Korea has praised Malaysia's active leadership as Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), highlighting its constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability. South Korea's Ambassador to Malaysia Yeo Seung Bae said that as Asean organises for peace and stability in Southeast Asia, Malaysia as the chair plays an important and active role, especially in addressing the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. "Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim visited Bangkok a couple of months ago and met both the military leadership and the opposition leadership. "By doing this important role as Chair, Malaysia is making a positive contribution to regional peace and stability. "In that regard, Korea highly appreciates the role of Malaysia, and our government will continue to support Malaysia's active role as the Asean Chair," he told Bernama in an interview recently. In May 2025, Anwar initiated separate dialogues with Myanmar's junta leader Min Aung Hlaing and the opposition National Unity Government (NUG), marking a significant step towards fostering direct engagement between the conflicting parties. Subsequently, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM 2025) held in May also agreed that Asean would undertake internal consultations on the proposal to appoint a permanent Asean Special Envoy on Myanmar for a three-year term, a move aimed at ensuring continuity and sustained engagement in addressing the protracted crisis. On June 22, Malaysia called for enhanced collaboration between Asean and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address the deteriorating situation in Myanmar, with a focus on ending violence, alleviating the humanitarian crisis, and supporting long-term peace in the country. Meanwhile, for the upcoming 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) this July, Yeo reaffirmed South Korea's role as a responsible member of the international community and a strong supporter of Asean centrality, particularly in Malaysia's efforts to improve the security situation in the region. Korea is an active member of the East Asia Summit and the Asean Regional Forum, as well as being a key dialogue partner of Asean. "So definitely our new government places big importance on this July's Foreign Ministers' Meeting," he said. The 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) will be held from July 8 to 11, 2025, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre and will bring together the foreign ministers of all Asean member countries to review Asean's progress and unity, as well as discuss key regional issues. – Bernama
