Wyandotte County deputy killed in KCK shooting; suspect identified

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Police are investigating after a Wyandotte County deputy was killed in a shooting on Saturday afternoon. The shooting took place at about 3:45 p.m. near South 30th Street and Shawnee Drive in Kansas City, Kansas. The deputy was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, KCKPD said. The victim has since been identified as Elijah Ming. See the latest headlines in Kansas City and across Kansas, Missouri According to KCKPD, Deputy Ming was initially called to the area for a civil standby at about 3:30 p.m. after a woman requested that a law enforcement officer accompany her as she moved out of her home. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) said she had concerns about her safety. The woman reportedly told investigators that when her friends tried to help her, the suspect, identified by KBI as 38-year-old Shawn Harris, had threatened her with a gun. After the woman requested help, Deputy Ming and a KCKPD officer responded to the scene. However, according to KBI, as they approached the front door, Harris shot at the officers multiple times from inside the house. The KCKPD officer was uninjured in the shooting, but Deputy Ming suffered life-threatening injuries. Following the shooting, multiple law enforcement officers responded to the scene. As officers attempted life-saving measures on Deputy Ming, though, gunfire was exchanged between KCKPD and the sheriff's office. According to KBI, Harris had barricaded himself inside the home and was shot during the multi-hour standoff. Eventually, police were able to negotiate over the phone and get Harris out of the home by about 5 p.m. He was subsequently taken into custody and brought to a hospital, where he is said to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries. While formal charges are yet to be filed, Harris has been arrested and booked in the Johnson County Jail on suspicion of capital murder of a law enforcement officer. Newborn Kelce Taylor becomes youngest member of Swifties, Chiefs fandom KBI said Deputy Ming had also been taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. But despite life-saving efforts, he later died from his injuries. At this time, investigations are being taken over by the KBI. In a news release addressing the deadly shooting, the bureau said: 'This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature, and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings which take several weeks to complete. When this investigation concludes, case findings will be presented to the Wyandotte County District Attorney for charging decisions. The investigation is ongoing.' KCK and Wyandotte County officials spoke at a press conference Saturday night. Mayor Tyrone Garner called the shooting a senseless and unnecessary act of violence. He also called on the community to keep Deputy Ming's family and his fellow law enforcement and public safety officials in their thoughts and prayers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Third man charged in teen's ‘17 drug robbery death

As Anthony Triplett was set to get out of prison for killing a 14-year-old boy, charges were unsealed July 21 for a different criminal case for Diego Serna's Nov. 2, 2017 death in Gary's Miller section. Triplett, 27, of Gary, is the third man charged in Serna's killing. The case has been delayed for years. He has pleaded not guilty. His next hearing is Sept. 11. Against his better instincts, a 20-year-old man went to a Gary apartment complex on Nov. 2, 2017, to sell 1.5 ounces of marijuana to Augustus 'Gus' Johnson, his then-Hammond Walmart co-worker, charges allege. It was a setup. The man ended up seriously wounded and his friend, Serna, 16, of Hammond, was killed. Gary Police responded to the Marquette Apartments, 405 South Huntington St. They found Serna, who appeared lifeless, on his stomach. The marijuana dealer survived. Johnson, now 48, is awaiting sentencing after signing a plea deal in 2021. At various points, prosecutors filed to squash the deal, then go forward with it. He told police that he, another Walmart co-worker, Triplett, talked about robbing the dealer months earlier. That evening, they picked up co-defendant Marcell Ellison in East Chicago. At the Gary apartments, as the marijuana dealer approached Johnson's car, Triplett came up behind him and fired four shots, charges state. Ellison also fired shots toward the man. Johnson told police he was the getaway driver. Ellison's trial is set in November. The case was further complicated after the original detective got indicted in a federal child porn case. It has since been reassigned to a different investigator. Former Gary Police Det. James Bond, 52, of Crown Point, a former deputy chief, commander and homicide supervisor, was indicted in September 2024 after soliciting an explicit video from a 17-year-old boy working as a city intern in the police department last summer. Investigators found a latent cached screenshot on his iPhone. Triplett was sentenced in December 2021 for killing 14-year-old Arion Lilly, who was shot in the back after leaving a barber shop, lawyers said. Triplett said he was fleeing another car shooting at him and didn't mean to hit the boy.

NY parole officer who moonlights as therapist indicted on child porn charges

A New York State parole officer who moonlights as a therapist has been indicted after he was found with child pornography on his cellphone during a stop at JFK airport earlier this year. Colin Kowlessar, 53, was arrested when Customs and Border Protection agents found videos and photos of child porn on his iPhone during a stop at the airport after returning from a trip to Guyana on Feb. 27, according to a complaint from the time. Kowlessar, who worked as a parole officer with the new York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, is expected to be arraigned next week in Brooklyn federal court after a grand jury indicted him Wednesday in the same case on one count of possession of child pornography. Psychology Today Kowlessar, a husband and father living in Freeport, Long Island, has been free on $250,000 bond since his February court appearance. The conditions of his release included orders that he surrendered his service gun, agreed not to treat patients under the age of 18 as part of his side gig as a therapist, and stayed away from minors, with the exception of his 16-year-old son from another marriage. Advertisement The materials — including three short videos — found on his phone involved girls performing sex acts and were downloaded from the Telegram app, the complaint alleged. One of the victims was under the age of 12, according to the indictment. In the app, officers found archived chats in groups called 'Underworld VIP' and ' — which both contained a known code for child porn — an emoji of the number 18 crossed out in red, the court documents claim. Kowlessar was arrested earlier this year at JFK airport on a trip back to New York when border patrol officers stopped him and found the illicit materials on his phone. LinkedIn/Colin Kowlessar Advertisement Kowlessar admitted to cops during an interview that 'on at least two separate occasions he has purchased 'CP' [child porn] knowing that the persons depicted therein were minors,' the complaint alleges. 'The defendant also stated that he has since deleted the materials.' Kowlessar's criminal defense attorney Rich Langone told The Post by phone Thursday afternoon that 'this was an accidental downloading.' 'Be careful when you're floating around the internet,' Langone said. 'You never know what can pop on…and you go on something and something pops up and if it pops up, you could be liable for it.' 'He's a good man, a family man,' the lawyer said. 'He has no criminal history.' Advertisement Langone also said his client has never had a negative complaint from his work as a therapist. The defense attorney confirmed that his client has been on inactive duty as a parole officer since his arrest. Kowlessar's online therapist profile says he has 10-years of experience and helps clients with myriad issues, including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges and substance abuse issues, according to Psychology Today.
