India's aggregate of 1,849 runs in the first two Tests of this series is now the highest by any team in the first two matches of a Test series, underlining their batting dominance and setting the tone for a series to remember.
India's total came from scores of 587 all out in the first innings and 427/6 declared in the second, setting England a gargantuan target of 608 — the second-highest India have ever set in a fourth innings and the second-highest England have been asked to chase at home.
This historic feat was built on the back of stellar batting performances. In the first innings, captain Shubman Gill led the way with a masterful 269, ably supported by Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42). Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal's 87 and Karun Nair's 31 had laid the foundation after a shaky start.
England fought back through a sensational 303-run stand between Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184*), but Mohammed Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) turned the game with the new ball, bundling England out for 407.

India then launched a blistering counterattack. Gill (161) and Jadeja (69*) struck again in the second innings, while Rishabh Pant (65) and KL Rahul (55) delivered quickfire cameos to push India's total past the 1000-mark before declaring.

Jonathan Trott Lavishes Huge Praise, Calls Gill A 'Carbon Copy' Of Kohli
Jonathan Trott praised India captain Shubman Gill's remarkable innings of 161 and 269 in the Edgbaston Test. Gill's 430 runs are the second-highest in a single Test. Former England batter Jonathan Trott was amazed by India captain Shubman Gill's remarkable innings of 161 in the second innings of the second Test against England at Edgbaston. Former England batter Jonathan Trott feels privileged to have witnessed current India captain Shubman Gill's remarkable double hundred and the second innings century in the Edgbaston Test, which had glimpses of another genius, Virat Kohli. Gill scored 269 and 161 in both Indian innings, making him the player with the second-highest individual aggregate of runs in a single Test (430), behind former England skipper Graham Gooch. 'Today, he showed how complete a batter he is. It reminded me of the previous Indian number four — almost a carbon copy of that genius. I don't think he could've dreamed of a better start to his first two Tests on this tour. Sure, he'd have liked to win at Headingley, but now he's hopefully set up a fantastic victory here tomorrow," Trott told JioHotstar. Former India pacer Varun Aaron also praised the visiting captain, highlighting Gill's hard work for the England tour. 'Shubman just can't seem to put a foot wrong, and I hope this form continues for as long as possible. But it hasn't happened by chance. He's put in a lot of hard work — even during the IPL — to improve as a red-ball player. He's tweaked his tactics, changed his technique a bit, and you can see the results. When someone as talented as Shubman Gill puts in the hard yards, he steps into that 'legend' territory," Aaron said. Shubman Gill amassed an impressive 430 runs across both innings, marking the second-highest total in a single Test, trailing only England's Graham Gooch who scored 456 runs (333 and 123) against India at Lord's in 1990. Gill became the second player to achieve 150-plus scores in both innings of a Test, following Allan Border (150* and 153) against Pakistan in Lahore in 1980. His performance also marked the first instance of a 250-plus and 150-plus score in a Test by a batter. The 25-year-old is only the second Indian, after Sunil Gavaskar, to record a double century and a century in the same Test. He surpassed former captain and legendary batter Virat Kohli (243 and 50) to achieve the highest aggregate by an Indian captain in a Test match. Gill is also the second Asian batter to score a 350-plus aggregate in a Test outside the subcontinent, following Pakistan's Hanif Mohammad (354: 17 and 337) at Bridgetown in 1958. Ex-England cricketer hails Gill, Pant for seamless transition in Indian Test team: 'The King is dead, long live the King'
Newly-appointed India Test captain Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant have been in red-hot form in the ongoing tour of England and former all-rounder David Lloyd felt the two had seamlessly filled the massive void left behind by Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. read more India captain Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant currently are the top-two run-scorers in the ongoing tour of England. Reuters There was a big question mark on what India's batting lineup in Test cricket would look like and how they would perform without Virat Kohli after the former captain and batting superstar abruptly retired from the format in May. Shubman Gill's red-hot form in the ongoing tour of England, however, has helped ease some of those concerns, with the newly-appointed Test skipper and Kohli's successor at the No 4 spot having smashed nearly 600 runs so far in the series. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Lloyd heaps praise on Gill and Pant after heroics at Headingley and Edgbaston Former England all-rounder David Lloyd, for one, feels India couldn't have asked for a better transition as far as India's premier Test batter is concerned and made a similar comparison between Pant and legendary wicketkeeper-captain MS Dhoni. 'People say world-class players are irreplaceable, but are they? This is a real case of 'The King is dead, long live the King.' Shubman Gill has taken over seamlessly from one of the greatest modern batsmen in Virat Kohli and in style too,' Lloyd wrote in his column for the Daily Mail. 'Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant is always box office and has taken India to the next level after MS Dhoni. High praise indeed, for both,' he added. Both Gill and Pant have been outstanding in the two Tests that have taken place so far in the series, with the second match entering its final day on Sunday. Gill has racked up 585 runs at an average touching 150 (146.25) – including 269 and 161 in the second Test at Edgbaston – in his first series since he succeeded Rohit Sharma as Test captain. Pant, appointed Gill's deputy in the format during the squad announcement in May, sits at the second spot on the run-scorer's list with 342 runs at an average of 85.50. That includes twin centuries in the first Test at Headingley that took his career tally of Test tons to 8 – two more than Dhoni, making him the Indian wicketkeeper with most Test centuries.
