KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said tourism continues to be Sabah's main economic driver, contributing more than 380,000 jobs across various sectors. He said, in a speech delivered by Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew, that the sector accounted for around 15 per cent of the state's GDP in 2023, generating RM13.1 billion in revenue.
Advertisement Community-based tourism alone brought in RM7 million last year from 18 active districts, with more rural initiatives in the pipeline. The State Government is investing in infrastructure upgrades, including the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) and rural access roads, alongside digital platforms to enhance tourism services. Hajiji said hosting Asean Travel Exchange (Atex) 2025 is a key milestone in positioning Sabah as a regional tourism partner, while also highlighting the sector's potential for sustainable and inclusive growth. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kiulu youth recognised for community impact

Joniston with the youth during the Santai Pitimungan Belia Kiulu programme. KIULU (July 14): Kiulu youth were recognised for their contributions to community development through the presentation of awards for outstanding youth in tourism and agro-based entrepreneurship. The awards, introduced for the first time, aim to acknowledge and encourage young individuals who have demonstrated leadership and initiative in their respective fields. The recipients were Juanson Moidin (Youth Tourism Entrepreneur) from Kampung Pahu; Charlie Gumbolog (Youth Agro-Agriculture Entrepreneur) from Kampung Taginambur; and Dell Darion Victor (Youth Agro-Fisheries Entrepreneur) from Kampung Rugading. Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment cum Kiulu assemblyman, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, presented the awards during the Santai Pitimungan Belia Kiulu programme, yesterday. More than 500 people attended the event, which was jointly organised by Kelab Belia Prihatin Kiulu and the Kiulu Tourism Association, with support from the Kiulu ADUN's Office. The programme took place at the Pulou Kelapa Eco-Tourism Open Hall in Kampung Malanggang Lama. Kelab Belia Prihatin Kiulu chairperson, Elsheera Alfred Yapat, said the programme served as a meaningful platform to encourage active youth participation in building their character and contributing to their community. 'Our goal is clear, to bring Kiulu youth together in an empowering environment where they can share talents, experiences, and build networks for a brighter future. 'As Datuk Joniston has often emphasised, Kiulu has great potential in tourism, agriculture and industry. I believe our youth have everything it takes to unlock this potential, with creativity, spirit, and wisdom as their greatest assets,' she said. Meanwhile, Joniston said recognising youth achievements is crucial to motivating more young people to take an active role in areas that directly impact the community, such as tourism, agriculture and social initiatives. 'The young people of Kiulu should not rely solely on existing opportunities, but must be bold in creating their own space, be independent and competitive. 'Technology and social media should be used wisely to highlight village uniqueness, generate income, and support initiatives such as agropreneurship, home cafes and community-based tourism services,' he added. He also proposed having an Idea Pitch Mini programme as a platform for young people to present business or community project ideas, with the opportunity to receive seed funding. This, he said, should be part of efforts to further empower youth in Kiulu. During the event, two former students of SMK Tun Fuad Stephens — Joshua Subing from Kampung Pahu Lama and Adellysandro Edward from Kampung Longkou Baru — were also recognised for their achievements in sports. Joniston also presented incentives to 17 outstanding STPM students from SMK Tun Fuad Stephens in recognition of their academic accomplishments. The programme featured a traditional costume design competition, musical performances, a local produce market, as well as information-sharing on financing opportunities available for young entrepreneurs through relevant agencies.

Mapping Sabah's grassroots innovations to inclusive and sustainable futures

Published on: Monday, July 14, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 14, 2025 By: Paul Canigea, Anita Limjoon, Fiona V Loijon Text Size: The Institute for Development Studies Sabah (IDS), Sabah Techpreneur Association (Sata) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) launched a research project to map grassroots innovations across the state to explore this potential. THE demand for innovation is global, and particularly in the context of sustainable development goals. Grassroots innovation is becoming a powerful tool in tackling local challenges across Southeast Asia. In countries like India, innovation ecosystems have grown significantly and in 2023 alone over 75,000 patents were granted. Vietnam and Thailand are also investing in rural innovations which promote sustainability, for example, solar energy projects which provide reliable power to local communities. For instance, Thailand has built solar microgrids in rural areas, allowing villages to produce and control their own electricity. Small scale hydropower projects have been deployed in remote areas in Indonesia to supply renewable energy to support local economies. These examples show how improved infrastructure can support community driven solutions that can promote both economic growth and environmental sustainability. Sabah's role is unique in this regional context. Subscribe or LOG IN to access this article. Over 60,000 in Sabah, Labuan enjoy improved electricity from Petra projects

Published on: Monday, July 14, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 14, 2025 Text Size: Fadillah and others visit the KKBU project. More than 60,000 electricity users in Sabah and Labuan are now enjoying a more stable power supply following the completion of seven energy projects worth over RM260 million by the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra). The projects, which include grid upgrades, new substation connections and enhanced safety systems, cover areas from Tanjung Aru to Ranau, Batu Sapi and Labuan. Deputy Prime Minister and Petra Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof officiated the handover ceremony at the Kota Kinabalu Bulk Supply Substation (KKBU), part of a special federal initiative known as PPKBES. The KKBU project, under the 10th Malaysia Plan, replaces outdated systems and now supports 11,452 users including those at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, with enhanced capacity and newer gas-insulated switchgear and transformers. Among the other completed works is the RM34.92 million Labuan–Sipitang grid upgrade, enabling Sabah to eventually import up to 30MW of electricity from Sarawak through a regional Asean Power Grid once Sarawak's portion is completed. Inland, the RM31.3 million Ranau substation has connected the town to the state grid, reducing diesel dependency for over 15,000 users, while the RM30 million Batu Sapi substation has improved distribution in Sandakan's surrounding areas. Also completed are key infrastructure upgrades at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan's Rancha-Rancha substation, and a submarine cable protection system - all contributing to a stronger, cleaner and more reliable power network across the region. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
