Apprentice tradie forced to work 85 hours a week as dire pay issue exposed: 'Draining'

Thousands of apprentice tradespeople are being forced to take on second jobs or side hustles just to get by, and it's taking a huge toll on their mental health. It's no secret that tradies in training don't earn much money.
However, with the rising cost of living, some are struggling to make ends meet. Aidan Garcia has been loving his mechanic apprenticeship, but the 18-year-old said it's impossible to live off his roughly $600 per week salary.
"It's draining having barely any money," he told Yahoo Finance.

He has to pay $250 per week in rent, living with his brother, and around $110 per week in fuel.
After also buying food and paying off his phone bill and other expenses, he has virtually nothing left at the end of each pay cycle to spend on hanging with friends, his partner, or even just squirrelling some cash into his savings.
As a result, the second-year trainee has taken on a second job at a My Muscle Chef warehouse, where he does a variety of jobs like cooking food or packing meals into boxes.
When he initially started that side gig, he was working eight-and-a-half-hour days at a mechanic shop starting at 7:30am, and then would do an overnight shift at the warehouse from 10:15pm to 6:15am.
He did that five days a week.On weekends, he picked up odd jobs on Airtasker, like removing rubbish and helping fix people's gearboxes.
At his peak, he was working 85 hours a week. He's since dropped back to just three overnight shifts, but is still doing about 67 hours.
He would try to squeeze in sleep whenever he could, whether that was on his lunch break, during his lessons at TAFE, or the few hours between shifts.
"It does make you second-guess the apprenticeship," he said, adding that he's been close to dropping out several times.
Extra gigs have doubled his income, but at what cost?
Garcia admitted it has been a brutal slog, but the extra jobs have lifted his weekly wage from $600 to $1,400.
It's given him more financial breathing room, but it meant he had next to zero downtime and is still only just getting by.
He's keen to stick with his apprenticeship, as he'll soon be earning much more money. By the time he's fully qualified, his hourly rate is set to go up from the current $16 per hour to at least $28 per hour.
But it still bothers him that he could be earning better money elsewhere.
"My mates are all doing much better than me," he said.
"Some are making good money in the Army and loving it. Another mate told me about a job where he works, and I can make more money there in just three shifts than for a whole week as an apprentice mechanic."
But he's not alone.
"Most of the people I know either had second jobs or would just be scraping the bottom of the barrel," he added.
Research from Apprenticeships Are Us (ARU) has revealed more than 40 per cent of apprentices take on second jobs to help cover rising expenses.
This results in extreme burnout and can cause many to drop out of their apprenticeship altogether.
Low wages contributing to mass apprentice exodus
Australia is in the midst of a trade shortage, and many experts have been sounding the alarm that the housing crisis could become even worse because there aren't enough young people picking up a trade.
The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) recently found there has been a 17.4 per cent drop in apprenticeship commencements, and the non-completion rate for apprenticeships sits at 60 per cent.
Dennis Rodgers, apprentice employment manager at ARU, said with many trainees earning between $26,800 and $29,400 per year, it's no wonder some are dropping out.
'These young workers are forced to make tough choices about basic living costs. On top of that, they're expected to invest thousands of dollars into mandatory tools they need just to do their job,' he said.
'We're at real risk of losing the next generation of skilled workers altogether, and of our skills shortage worsening.
"Many young people are simply walking away from apprenticeships because they can't see a viable path forward — financially or mentally.'
Garcia said even the most basic toolkit that's essential for his job can cost from $4,000 up to $10,000. Some of his apprentice mates have taken out loans to get these tools, which has put them in further financial strife.
The government has announced a $10,000 incentive for apprentices, which gets paid out in instalments over the four-year training program.
Garcia said that would be a huge help, but said more needs to be done to help apprentices get paid more and not be forced into working around the clock to survive.

Millions of Australians are facing a bleak retirement, as they don't have enough savings to support a comfortable life. New data from Finder has found that many will be forced to work well into their 60s and 70s to build up their nest eggs before they can finally enjoy their twilight years. The consumer group discovered 20 per cent, equivalent to 4.3 million people, said their superannuation won't fully fund their retirement dreams. A further 20 per cent said they'll only be able to get by later in life if they cut back on their spending now. Some Aussies could have an even shakier financial future in retirement if they haven't paid off their mortgage or they are renting, which can be at the whim of price hikes. Finance expert Ben Nash told Yahoo Finance there are two main things you can do now to ensure you have the biggest nest egg possible. Nash said a quick health check on your account should be your first port of call. "Make sure your super is in a good fund with good investments," he said. "You want the money to be working hard for you, and not just for your super company. "There are a lot of great super funds out there these days that can be far cheaper, better options for the majority of people... you don't need a self-managed super fund (SMSF) to get great performance."You can log in to your superannuation account to see where your money is invested and some funds have financial advisors who can guide you into an arrangement that suits your age and risk appetite. myGov also has a handy tool that allows you to compare your super fund with others in the market, which can give you a broad look at how your money might perform. Nash added that if you're worried about being behind on your super balance, you can make additional contributions with your spare cash. Say you had $60,000 in your super right now, and contributed just $10 per week to your account. Over 20 years, you would have contributed $10,400. But thanks to compound interest, your super account would have been boosted by $319,091, based on a 9 per cent rate of return and monthly compounding. The Pivot Wealth founder said you should chat to a financial advisor to see if additional super contributions to your employer's would be a good idea for your circumstances. How much super do I need for a comfortable retirement? This figure can differ depending on who you ask, but the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (AFSA) suggested it's $595,000 for singles, and $690,000 for couples. The Association said if you live a modest life as a single person, you'd need around $33,386 per year. That goes up to $52,383 if you want a comfortable retirement. For couples, a modest retirement would require $48,184 per year, while comfortable twilight years would need $73,875 per year. According to data from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), the average Aussie has just $172,835 in their super account at the moment. The median, which can be a much better snapshot because it takes out the highest and lowest performers, super account balance was $60,037. Pascale Helyar-Moray, Finder's superannuation literacy expert, said it's worth doing everything you can while you're working to ensure your nest egg will get you through retirement. She said if you don't, it could be a dire future ahead for many. 'More and more people are worried that retirement will arrive before the money does, leaving them underprepared," she said. 'Super earnings below $30,000 are taxed at a maximum of just 15 per cent, which means salary sacrificing into super could help grow your wealth while also lowering your tax. 'You won't be able to access your super until retirement, so it's wise to ease into it – $100 a month may not sound like much, but it can make a real impact over time.' Some who don't have enough in their super might be forced to apply for the Age Pension to get by. However, Helyar-Moray said you shouldn't bank on this as your ticket to financial freedom. "The Age Pension isn't guaranteed – your assets could disqualify you from receiving it," she said.

Site works are accelerating and are on-budget and on schedule, consistent with the target of first gold production in January 2027. A trend of rising costs is evident in the global gold sector, including in West Africa, driven by a range of factors, not the least of which is a steady increase in royalties and indirect charges payable to host governments (and others) which are a function of prevailing gold prices. In other words, as the price of gold rises, so too do expectations by host governments and host communities of an increasing share of the higher gold prices. This occurs in the form of higher royalty and gold price linked indirect charges by governments as well as an increase in the cost of land access and contributions to community assistance funds, demanded by host communities. Other factors that impact Perseus's operating costs include the rising cost of wages, freight costs and therefore consumables and the fact that in some operations, as they mature, haul distances and elevations increase and facilities such as tailings dams require expansion. In addition, forecast costs are impacted by site specific factors outside of Perseus's control such as at Yaouré, where an expected interruption is expected to the availability of power from the Ivorian power grid in H1 FY26 caused by planned maintenance of power stations that contribute power to the grid. It has been assumed that Perseus will be required to make significantly more use of its standby generators during this period which operate at a cost that is materially above grid power costs.
