Engage The Public To Bridge Policy Gaps, PM Urges Senior Officials
GENERAL
LUMUT, June 15 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged all ministers, senior federal and state government officials, as well as policy and project implementers, to frequently engage with the public to better understand the issues faced by the people.
The Prime Minister said members of parliament should also adopt this approach to ensure local concerns are addressed more effectively and comprehensively.
'Even senior civil servants are requested to go to the ground, which is why we have initiatives like Sejati MADANI and Kampung Angkat MADANI. These enable senior officials, including ministers, to identify any disconnect between policy statements and their implementation at the grassroots level.
'When we engage at the ground level, we discuss issues like education, unemployment, drug abuse, healthcare facilities and economic projects. All these must be addressed thoroughly because the challenges reported may differ between federal and state levels,' he said.
Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said this at the closing of the Perak-level MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 held at Lumut Waterfront here today.
Anwar stressed the importance of directly listening to the people's grievances through initiatives like the MADANI Rakyat programme or dialogue sessions between leaders and the public to gather feedback on areas needing improvement in development projects.
Citing examples, Anwar said he learned about issues such as damaged toilets in many schools and limited internet access in higher education institutions (IPT) through interactions with the public during community engagement programmes at eateries or Friday prayers.
He said such grassroots engagement allows the government to act swiftly in addressing these problems.
'We talk about artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation, Microsoft and so on, but we still have broken toilets and no internet access. This is a major contradiction because while we want to prepare for an advanced future, basic infrastructure must be resolved first,' he said.
Also present at the closing ceremony were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, representing the lead ministry.
Among others present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, and senior federal and state officials.

MALAYSIA SEEKS WIN-WIN SOLUTION WITH INDONESIA ON AMBALAT ISSUE
AM TANGKAK, June 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will work towards achieving a 'win-win' solution with Indonesia on the maritime boundary issue in Ambalat, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He said this could be achieved through the formation of a joint development authority to spur economic growth and address technical issues in the area. 'Why don't we jointly explore the mineral resources there so that both countries can benefit from them? 'In addition, we will continue talks and negotiations on the border. So we don't want a 'lose-lose' situation (between the two countries),' he told reporters after officiating the Ledang UMNO Division Delegates' Meeting at Dewan Putra Padang Lerek here today. Last Friday, the media reported that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto had expressed the strong commitment of both countries to accelerate strategic cooperation in various fields, including joint development in the maritime border area of Malaysia and Indonesia in Ambalat in a peaceful and mutually beneficial manner. Anwar, at a joint press conference following a bilateral meeting at Istana Merdeka in Jakarta, said both countries should consider economic cooperation, including in the maritime border area, for the benefit of the people. Meanwhile, Mohamad said he would be visiting Rome and Paris starting tomorrow to meet with his counterparts ahead of Anwar's participation in the BRICS Summit next month. He said discussions with his counterparts would cover several issues, including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Palestine, and the conflict involving Iran and the Zionist regime. 'That has always been part of our discussions, namely (the conflict) in Gaza and now in Iran… that will be the main issue,' he said.

State Governments Urged To Expedite Adoption Of National Forestry (Amendment) Act
SHAH ALAM, June 29 (Bernama) -- State governments have been urged to expedite the adoption of the National Forestry (Amendment) Act 2022 by amending their respective Forestry Enactments to support efforts in strengthening the preservation and conservation of the country's forested areas. Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, said that to date, only the Federal Territory and Perlis have fully implemented the amendments in the law. 'The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) remains committed to enhancing efforts to preserve and conserve the country's forested areas. 'The government is steadfast in its pledge to maintain at least 50 per cent of the country's land area under tree and forest cover, in line with the country's commitment made at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992,' he said. He said this when opening the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign in conjunction with the 2025 International Forest Day celebration at the National Botanical Gardens here today. According to Huang, among other things being done to fulfil the commitment, include the gazetting of forest areas according to the importance of the role of the forests involved and increasing the allocation of financial incentives for Ecological Fiscal Transfer for Biodiversity Conservation (EFT). 'The ministry has intensified efforts to gazette other forested areas as Permanent Forest Reserves (HSK), watershed and fully protected areas, as well as to gazette proposed HSK areas, particularly those located within the Central Forest Spine and Environmentally Sensitive Areas. 'The EFT allocation has been increased to RM250 million this year compared to RM200 million in 2024,' he said. The incentive, he said, can help the state governments to identify and implement high-impact projects for conservation purposes in line with the six scopes outlined for EFT project implementation in collaboration with the respective State Forestry Department.
