MSU football completes flip from Rutgers, gets commitment from legacy LB Adam Shaw
Michigan State football has successfully completed the flip of Spartans legacy linebacker Adam Shaw from the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
Shaw announced his commitment to Michigan State on Tuesday morning, completing the flip from the Scarlet Knights. Shaw initially committed to Rutgers earlier in June following his official visit there, but then last week reopened his recruitment and elected to take an official visit to Michigan State -- which led to his commitment to the Spartans on Tuesday.
Shaw is a three-star linebacker in the 2026 class, and holds a recruiting rating of 88 on 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 47 linebacker and No. 16 player from New Jersey in the class, according to 247Sports.
Shaw has strong ties to Michigan State as a double-legacy recruit for the Spartans. His father, Scott Shaw, was an All-American offensive lineman at Michigan State in 1997, and his mother Angela (DiJames) Shaw was a star field hockey player for the Spartans.
Michigan State has been on a recent heater on the recruiting trail, with Shaw becoming the 18th commit for the Spartans and third in the last 24 hours. The Spartans' surge in recruiting has raised them into the top 25 nationally in team rankings on both 247Sports and Rivals.

4 Steelers could take over Cordarrelle Patterson's kick return duties, per Mike Tomlin
Cordarrelle Patterson was officially released on Tuesday, leaving kick return duties up for grabs — but HC Mike Tomlin already has a few Steelers in mind. Following Tuesday's practice at training camp, Tomlin addressed the opening at kick returner, naming four Steelers on offense who could take over the role. "We're not devoid of candidates," Tomlin told reporters. "Really excited about [Kenneth Gainwell] in that area. Certain, Jaylen Warren's got some experience in that area. We're looking at Kaleb Johnson. We're looking at Roman Wilson. We're not devoid of candidates. I'm pretty comfortable with the pool of candidates, but it's still some work to sort out." The Steelers may have one of the league's best pools of potential returners — as Gainwell, Warren, Johnson, and Wilson are all explosive and dangerous with the ball in their hands. Earlier in the media availability, Tomlin mentioned that Wilson was catching kicks and punts during pre-practice — so it wouldn't be far-fetched to consider him the front-runner for kick return duties. It's certainly a situation to keep an eye on as camp progresses — and we at Steelers Wire will keep you updated on the positional battle in Latrobe. 'Still dirty': Tigers fans issue warning to Lachie Galvin for Bulldogs grudge match
Wests Tigers fans have promised to bring the heat when Lachie Galvin runs out for the first time against the club he ditched mid-season. But they risk being drowned out by the rabid Bulldogs Army. The 20-year-old playmaker will line-up against the Tigers at CommBank Stadium on Sunday afternoon and can expect a serve from the home crowd with every touch of the ball. David Craine is a lifelong Balmain/Wests Tigers fan and administers the 'Wests Tigers Will Never Die' Facebook page, which has more than 44,000 members. He predicts Galvin will cop a hostile reception from both fans and former teammates. "The fans are still dirty over him walking out and will let him know. They will boo him at every opportunity," Craine told Yahoo Sport Australia. "And I believe it won't just be the fans - the players will be filthy as well. "I've heard reports that the team want payback for what he said about Benji…basically saying he can't coach. These players are only there because they believe in Benji. They will want to send him (Galvin) a strong message." But for all the passion and anger Tigers fans will muster, Craine concedes they face a tough time being heard over the raucous Bulldogs Army. Canterbury's fan base is on the march and turning up in big numbers during the club's best season in a decade. "I expect Dogs fans to be bigger and louder than our sobbing fans," Craine predicted. "Their fans are the most passionate and noisy in the game and will try to drown the Tigers fans out. But we won't back down and they won't back down. We'll both be doing what we can to give our side an edge. It's all set up for a really feisty afternoon with plenty at stake for both teams." Canterbury has kept Galvin out of the firing line this week, refusing to offer him up to media outlets for fear of heightening tensions. It's been left to teammates to speculate on how the rookie half will handle playing against the club he rejected two months ago. Halves partner Matt Burton said: "He'll just go to another level and get better from that (scrutiny). That won't faze him at all. "There's going to be a lot of talk, but whatever's in these four walls, we just stick together and we don't worry about that. It's like he's a 26-year-old in a 20-year-old's body. He's got that maturity about him."

Jonathan Smith provides injury update of Spartans on opening day of preseason fall camp
Head coach Jonathan Smith provides an injury update on the Spartans on the first day of fall camp In the words of Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith, the Spartans are starting fall preseason camp in a "solid" spot on the injury front. Michigan State opened up fall preseason camp on Tuesday, with the Spartans holding their first practice of the 2025 season. As part of fall camp opening, media was able to attend a brief portion of practice and have availability to ask questions to a number of players and Smith. One of the typically asked questions during this time of year is the injury status of the team, which Smith was able to provide a positive response. "I'd say solid," Smith said when asked about the overall team health of the Spartans. "Knock on wood, but we haven't came across the season-ending injury (or anything) to that extent. We definitely are being, I'll call it, smart with some guys in camp and we will ease them into it. But currently, we are feeling pretty solid." Now, preseason camp has just started so, of course, we are only dipping our toes into the injury front at this time. But, this is certainly reassuring knowing there aren't any offseason injuries that Smith and the Spartans were ready to announce on opening day of fall camp. This is a notable development as we get going on the 2025 season. Throughout fall camp, injuries will be something to monitor so stick with Spartans Wire for the latest updates. Hopefully, we don't have any news of any significant injuries before Michigan State takes the field on August 29 in the season opener against Western Michigan.
