College World Series: Power ranking the eight teams in Omaha. Where does LSU rank?
The College World Series is a championship like no other. Eight teams travel to Omaha with the aim of winning a national title. It's a 10-day event that features two four-team double-elimination brackets followed by a best-of-three championship series.
The 2025 field features some fresh faces. No team from the 2024 CWS made it back this year. However, most of these teams aren't strangers to Omaha. LSU is back for the second time in three years after winning the national championship in 2023.
West Coast powers like Arizona, UCLA, and Oregon State are here, too. Coastal Carolina has been to Omaha just once before, but it won the national title in 2016. Louisville is also familiar with the CWS, making its sixth appearance since 2007.
Then there's Arkansas, a perennial contender chasing its first-ever national championship. You have your Cinderella story, too, with Murray State making its first CWS trip in program history.
The action will begin on Friday, but before we get underway, let's rank the eight teams in the 2025 College World Series.
8. Murray State Racers
This is no slight on Murray State in the midst of its historic run. What the Racers have done so far is incredible. Murray State has 44 wins, upset Ole Miss and Georgia Tech in the regional, and upset Duke in the super regional. The Ohio Valley from Kentucky plays in a home stadium that fits just 800. Now, it's playing in the College World Series.
Don't underestimate this squad, but from a power ratings standpoint, they're the longest shot in Omaha. Per BetMGM, the Racers' national title odds are +3000.
With Jonathan Hogart and Carson Garner, Murray State has some hitters that can hit it out of the park. Dom Decker and Justin Mercer are hit machines, too. But the pitching is a huge question mark.
Murray State has won a few shootouts to get here, but that style of play won't work with the quality of pitcher it will face in Omaha.
7. Louisville Cardinals
Louisville made it to Omaha despite losing its last three series of the regular season and being one-and-done in the ACC Tournament. The Cardinals have since turned it around, winning the Nashville Regional and beating Miami in a three-game Super Regional.
But I have too many questions about this Cardinals squad to label them a contender. Louisville's ERA of 5.35 ranks 12th in the ACC, and the Cardinals allow 5.9 runs per game.
There are things to like. Louisville has 155 steals and ranks fifth in the ACC in slugging, but I don't think it has enough to overcome the pitching woes.
Louisville has a tough opener vs. Oregon State. If Louisville loses, it doesn't have the tools to climb out of the losers' bracket.
6. Arizona Wildcats
Arizona has won 10 of its last 11 games entering Omaha. But the recent success came right on the heels of a stretch where Arizona dropped five of six.
Arizona's run is impressive, but the Wildcats have been inconsistent vs. top competition this year. Arizona began its schedule 0-3, losing to Ole Miss, Clemson, and Louisville. Later in the year, Arizona dropped a game vs. Tennessee.
The Wildcats' run differential also ranks in the bottom half of the Big 12. They do a little bit of everything, but there's not one elite unit that can carry this team.
Arizona has a few guys that can hit it out of the park, but the lineup doesn't walk enough, and it's prone to strikeouts. That will hurt the Wildcats when facing teams like Coastal Carolina and Oregon State.
5. UCLA Bruins
UCLA is 47-16 on the year and ranks No. 11 nationally in the Massey Ratings. Playing in the Big Ten, the Bruins didn't face the same caliber of schedule as some other teams in Omaha did. Their NCAA Tournament path has been on the easier side too, facing UTSA in the super regional.
UCLA gets another favorable matchup in its CWS opener with Murray State on the docket. But UCLA must face LSU or Arkansas in its second contest. We'll find out a lot about this Bruins squad then.
Expect to see quality at-bats from this lineup. UCLA ranked second in the Big Ten in batting average, takes walks, and avoids strikeouts. The path for UCLA involves stringing hits together, but that won't come easy vs. the LSU and Arkansas pitching staffs.
4. Oregon State Beavers
Oregon State is making its first trip to Omaha since 2018 as the three-time champ looks to add a fourth trophy to the case.
Oregon State ranks No. 7 nationally in the Massey Ratings. Its offense and pitching/defense both rank in the top 10.
The Beavers had to play without a conference this year after the PAC-12 fell apart, forcing them to throw an independent schedule together. The strength of that slate was weaker than a few of their Omaha peers, but they've passed every test in the postseason.
The Beavers' lineup is dangerous. The only team in the CWS field with more homers than Oregon State is Arkansas. The group is led by shortstop Aiva Arquette, a potential top-five MLB draft pick. On the mound, Dax Whitney and Ethan Kleinschmidt give Oregon State two formidable starters who can duel it out with anyone in the field.
Oregon State is favored to win its opening game vs. Arizona.
3. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
Coastal Carolina is making its second trip to Omaha. The only time it was here before, the Chanticleers won it all in 2016. Now, Coastal arrives in Omaha as the hottest team in baseball, riding a 23-game win streak.
Coming from the Sun Belt, there are naturally questions about how CCU will fare vs. top competition, but the Chanticleers have come through when tested. The 23-game win streak includes a win at Clemson and a super regional sweep of Auburn.
The Massey Ratings slot Coastal as the fourth-best team in the sport, and the Chants are the favorite to win their side of the bracket. The pitching staff is among the best in the country, and the lineup is deep. They do the little things, too, leading the SBC in stolen bases and fielding percentage.
LSU has been here before. The Tigers have won seven national championships. Several players on this team were members of the 2023 squad that won it all.
Per BetMGM, LSU ranks No. 2 on the title odds board with +220 odds to win the championship.
The Tigers have the pieces to capture the trophy. The one-two starting pitching punch of Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson is hard to beat. And LSU's lineup is riding high after scoring 28 combined runs vs. West Virginia in the super regional.
1. Arkansas Razorbacks
The Razorbacks are the betting favorites to win the national title, and they take the top spot in our power rankings. Arkansas is led by long-time head coach Dave Van Horn, but it's yet to capture the elusive national championship. Perhaps, this is the Razorbacks' best chance yet.
Led by ace Zach Root, Arkansas has the deepest pitching staff in the field -- that goes for the starting rotation and the bullpen. The group is battle tested after competing in the SEC, baseball's best conference.
At the plate, Wehiwa Aloy is arguably the top position player in Omaha. He headlines a lineup that can do damage one through nine.
Arkansas has looked like a juggernaut at times this year. It had the occasional slump, but so did every team that faced SEC pitching each week. Arkansas' status as the favorite this week is well earned.

Watch Rams WR Puka Nacua surprise NFL rookies with message and signed jersey
Every NFL rookie has players they watched growing up — either right before they entered the league or throughout their childhood. These stars helped shaped who they became as players, and some will even be peers now. Some of the league's current and legendary stars gave to those rookies in an awesome "welcome to the league" video from Fanatics, where NFL rookies were surprised with a message and a signed jersey. Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua was a featured player who sent a message to some of the top first-round receivers like the Carolina Panthers' Tetairoa McMillan and the Green Bay Packers' Matthew Golden. Other NFL legends were also featured. Take a watch: It's a bit odd to see Nacua featured in a video that includes legendary players like Tom Brady and Hall of Famers like Peyton Manning, but his meteoric rise after just two seasons is also a testament to how quickly a young player can ascend to the top of his craft. Nacua was just a fifth-round pick before he broke out as a rookie and set NFL records. It's funny, too, that Nacua sent a message to McMillan after the Rams reportedly tried to trade up for the ex-Arizona receiver. This is a moment all the rookies will remember when they start their NFL careers. Perhaps McMillan will wear his signed Nacua jersey when the Rams face the Panthers in Charlotte in Week 13.

'This is his job to lose.' Rick Carlisle says Bennedict Mathurin will be Pacers starter next season
The biggest question surrounding Bennedict Mathurin this offseason was whether or not the Pacers would offer him a new deal as the fourth-year guard is eligible for contact extension this offseason. While that question hasn't been answered yet, another one has. Mathurin will be a starter this upcoming season. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle confirmed the news on Caitlin Cooper's podcast, which was released Tuesday. That decision seemed the likeliest scenario following Tyrese Haliburton's Achilles tendon tear that will keep him out for the 2025-26 season. In his first three seasons, Mathurin has proven to be every bit the gifted wing scorer the Pacers believed they were getting when they took him out of Arizona with the No. 6 pick in the 2022 draft. He's averaged 15.9 points per game across his first three seasons and he's the third-leading scorer in terms of total points in the the 2022 draft class behind only Orlando's Paolo Banchero and Oklahoma City's Jalen Williams, both All-Stars who are likely to earn max contract extensions. "He's a guy that's just a natural scorer," Carlisle told Cooper. "You put him in a rat game with a bunch of switching and a bunch of physical stuff, he's going to find 18 points and he's going to shoot seven free throws, at least. But the pure elements of the passing and the quick decisions and stuff like that are things that he is gradually getting, and he's going to get there. And I think, this year, right now, I'll break the news right here, I'm projecting him as our starter at the 2 this year on Day 1. I told him this, I was on the phone with him and his agent four days ago, and I said, 'You're going to be with the starters on Day 1. It's your job to lose. But here's what we need from you: We need you to keep working on the running and simply running to the corners and stretching out the defense.'" But Mathurin is the equivalent of a square peg the Pacers have been trying to fit into a round hole as his comfort in isolation and 1-on-1 basketball doesn't always jive in a system based on constant ball movement. Mathurin has had a hard time sticking in the Pacers' starting lineup and was replaced in the lineup when Aaron Nesmith returned from injury in February. The Pacers have pushed him to make quicker decisions with the ball to either shoot, pass or drive so that the ball doesn't stick. "Like you look at Ben Sheppard's game, I mean, Ben Sheppard probably gets more open corner 3s than anybody on our team simply because he's a soldier about getting to the corners," Carlisle said. "And so that's one thing that's gotten him on the floor, along with the fact that system-wise, he's a soldier in our system. He does everything we asked him to do defensively and offensively. And if he has a flaw, it's probably that he's not quite aggressive enough offensively looking to score. But in Benn's case we need him to be a great runner, a great decision-maker, as a movement guy, he's come light years, and he really understands and so this year with him as a starter on Day 1 and again, this is his job to lose. "And it's important to him to be a starter, he played very well as a starter last (year), but we got to a point where adjusting him out of the starting lineup became the best decision for our team as Aaron Nesmith became healthy. And Aaron Nesmith was a guy that at Vanderbilt, he was a guy that Jerry Stackhouse ran all kind of set plays for him. He can catch and shoot, and with our system in Indiana, he learned very quickly how he needed to adapt. You know, Lloyd Pierce works with him on a day-to-day basis. Works with him on running, footwork, blur screening, chase screening, doing all the random things, spacing the floor wider than probably intuitive than a lot of people would think, and so these are the adjustments that Benn is going to have to make as well. "I think one of things that's a challenge for Benn is he saw a path to being a great player in the NBA that was probably a little dated now. If you're looking at guys like Kobe and other guys that were more ball-centric during that period. The game has just changed a lot, and so you know, to be a great player now in a system like ours, and Pascal (Siakam) is living proof, and he give him all the credit in the world, he's a great leader on our team. He made tough adjustments where a lot of vet players would have come in and just said, 'Hey, I've been an All-Star twice, I've been all-league twice, you guys gotta get more with me.' But he's a great example of sacrifices that are made for our group to have a run like we did this year. But Benn Mathurin is going to get there, he's just, he has such great gifts as a scorer and our job as coaches is to meld guys like him that aren't necessarily seamless fits into a style that is effective for the rest of the guys and bring both forces hopefully closer together as time goes on.'
