The new WWE: Unreal docuseries on Netflix has revealed another major scrapped storyline, and this one was pitched by The Rock himself. The series shows that The Rock and his creative partner, Brian Gewirtz, pitched a plan for Kevin Owens to surprisingly win the Undisputed WWE Championship from Cody Rhodes at the Elimination Chamber premium live event.
The shocking pitch would have completely changed the landscape on the Road to WrestleMania 41. It is a fascinating look into the kind of "seismic" moments The Rock wanted to create.
The Rock and his writer pitched an idea where Cody Rhodes turns down his favor at Elimination Chamber, so Rock uses his power to set up a title match on the spot against Kevin Owens, and Owens wins the Undisputed Title.

A "Seismic" Pitch
In the docuseries, longtime creative mind Brian Gewirtz revealed the motivation behind the pitch. He explained that he and The Rock felt the expected babyface rivalry between Cody Rhodes and John Cena "felt a little dry" and they wanted to inject "controlled chaos" into the story.
The idea was that after Cody Rhodes refused The Rock's on-screen offers, The Rock would have made an "impromptu title match right then and there." The plan would have then seen Kevin Owens, who was in a storyline with Rhodes at the time, come out and defeat him to capture the championship.
"Kevin Owens winning the title wasn't the end goal," Gewirtz explained. "The takeaway was whatever it is we do, needs to be seismic."

The Heel Turn That Happened Instead
Ultimately, WWE chose to go with a different "seismic" moment. The segment at Elimination Chamber in March did not feature a Kevin Owens title win. Instead, it saw John Cena make his shocking heel turn, aligning himself with The Rock and setting up his own championship match against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41.
Gewirtz's history as a head writer for WWE during the Attitude Era and his current role as a top executive at The Rock's Seven Bucks Productions make him and The Rock a powerful creative force. While the plan for Owens to win the title was scrapped, it shows the kind of unpredictable storytelling they were pushing for.
Both Owens and Rhodes remain at the top of the card in WWE, with Cody set to challenge Cena in a Street Fight at SummerSlam, while Owens will hopefully be back in 2026 after undergoing neck surgery.

WWE SummerSlam Night 2 live results: Updates, winners and losers, highlights, grades and analysis

WWE SummerSlam Night 2 closes out WWE SummerSlam 2025 weekend with a bang, ending the two-night extravaganza with a stacked card on Sunday evening at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. After a busy Night 1, the momentum only ramps up more for the second half of the festivities. Sunday's card features six title matches, with all but two featuring extra stipulations. The hotly-anticipated main event rematch between Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena and former champion Cody Rhodes takes place under "Street Fight" rules. The last time Cena and Rhodes met was at WrestleMania 41 in April, when Cena dethroned Rhodes in his first match as a heel. Cena appeared to turn back to his classic babyface ways on this past Friday's "WWE SmackDown," however the question remains whether Cena's words were sincere or simply another ruse to distract Rhodes all over again. The Women's World title will once more be contested in a triple-threat match, as new champion Naomi defends against two of the former champions involved in this year's WrestleMania classic, Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley. They won't be the only women competing for gold though, as Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria battle it out in their bad-blood trilogy for Lynch's Intercontinental crown. There will be no DQs and no count-outs in that one, and if Valkyria loses, she'll be unable to ever challenge for the title again. Men's Intercontinental Champion Dominick Mysterio also be defends his belt against former champ AJ Styles after weeks of shenanigans on "WWE Raw." Then, rounding out the chaos, United States Champion Solo Sikoa will be locked in a Steel Cage for the latest chapter in his rivalry with Jacob Fatu. Yet all of these matches will surely pale in comparison to the WWE Tag Team title match. It will be Tables, Ladders and Chairs when the champions, The Wyatt Sicks, look to overcome five other teams. Here's a look at Saturday's full WWE SummerSlam Night 2 match card, which kicks off at 6 p.m. ET on Peacock: Undisputed WWE Championship, Street Fight: John Cena (c.) vs. Cody Rhodes Women's World Championship: Naomi (c.) vs. Iyo Sky vs. Rhea Ripley Intercontinental Championship: Dominick Mysterio (c.) vs. AJ Styles United States Championship, Steel Cage match: Solo Sikoa (c.) vs. Jacob Fatu Women's Intercontinental Championship, No DQ match: Becky Lynch (c.) vs. Lyra Valkyria WWE Tag Team Championship, TLC match: The Wyatt Sicks (Dexter Lumis and Joe Gacy) (c.) vs. Andrade and Rey Fenix vs. #DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) vs. Fraxiom (Axiom and Nathan Frazer) vs. Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Saban) vs. The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) Follow all of the action from SummerSlam Night 2 with Uncrowned's live coverage below:

WWE SummerSlam 2025 Live Results, Winners And Grades On Night 2

WWE SummerSlam 2025 Night 2 emanates from MetLife Stadium with almost 55,000 tickets sold. Cody Rhodes will challenge John Cena for the WWE Championship in a rematch of their WrestleMania 41 main event. John Cena shockingly turned babyface out of nowhere this past Friday on SmackDown, but much like Seth Rollins' knee injury, fans are dubious. WWE SummerSlam Night 2 offers up a strong follow-up to Night 1 after a wild ending where Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract after faking a knee injury at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event. CM Punk dethroned Gunther in an instant classic of a war during a 30-minute main event, only to be dethroned himself by Rollins. The WWE World Heavyweight Championship has changed hands three times since June 9, 2025. Last night was not without its flaws, however. Sami Zayn's win over Karrion Kross was forgettable to say the least. Kross has an edgy online gimmick going, but unlike Ricochet it has translated to real-life popularity. If MetLife Stadium is chanting your name, you're doing something right. Unfortunately, Kross' matches have left a lot to be desired. In his biggest WWE match to date, Kross underdelivered amid a promising stipulation. WWE added a wrinkle to this match after a surprise babyface turn from John Cena, leaving the finish even more in doubt. The odds are very close, and for the second night in a row, the main event is setting up for a wild finish. Potential show-stealing matches include the crowded Tag Team TLC match, which basically features the entire SmackDown tag team roster. Lyra Valkyria will attempt to regain her WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship—possibly with a Heel Bayley waiting in the wings. Jacob Fatu looks to regain his US Title against Solo Sikoa inside of a Steel Cage, and Rhea Ripley, Iyo Sky and Naomi will try to top last month's masterpiece between Rhea and Iyo. This was considered by many to be the greatest WWE women's match of all time, and Naomi crashed the ending with a Money in the Bank cash-in.
