New York Giants have been among NFL's worst drafting teams in Rounds 1-3 over past decade
How successful, or unsuccessful, have the New York Giants been in the first round of the NFL draft in recent years?
Not so good according to a new poll from Daniel Kelly of FTN Fantasy. Since 2015, they rank 26th out of 32 teams. No wonder they've lost 10 or more games in seven of the past eight seasons.
Like every team, they've had their hits and misses, but their misses are what the public is focused on these days.
From FTN:
The Q rating of the Giants' various first-rounders over the last decade is pretty high, but their fame-to-production ratio is lower than you'll find just about anywhere. Saquon Barkley was a hit in a vacuum, but a running back at second overall when guys like Denzel Ward, Quenton Nelson, Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson were later in that first round is a rough look, especially when it led to them reaching for Daniel Jones at sixth overall the next year. Add in the blow-up that was Kadarius Toney in 2021, and the Giants have struggled.
Saquon Barkley, although considered a future Pro Football Hall of Famer, is a miss because he didn't move the needle for the Giants as great as he was. They actually overdrafted him, which sounds ridiculous, but he is not a player you add to a rebuilding team. He is more of a final piece, as we've just seen.
The Giants still had some big hits in the last decade, such as Dexter Lawrence, Andrew Thomas, and Malik Nabers, but whiffed on players such as Toney, Eli Apple, Deandre Baker, and Evan Neal.
Evan Engram had issues as a Giant, but is still running routes in the NFL and having some success. The jury is still out on others, such as Kayvon Thibodeaux and Deonte Banks.
Daniel Jones is the lightning rod of the group. The issue with him is that he was extended beyond his rookie deal. That compounded the mistake of drafting him sixth overall back in 2019. It set the Giants back a half-decade.
The Giants have not fared much better in Day 2 in the draft according to the poll. They rank 24th over the past decade. Of the 21 players they picked on Day 2, they only have four Pro Bowls to show for their efforts.
Landon Collins was one of the league's best safeties for a while in there, with three Pro Bowls and a first-team All Pro in 2016-2018. It was another case of burning hot and bright, because his carry dipped from there, but it was a heck of a stretch. The Giants also got reliable types like Sterling Shepard, Dalvin Tomlinson and Wan'Dale Robinson, but the other particularly bright spot was Xavier McKinney, who ditched the Giants at his first opportunity and then made the Pro Bowl and got DPOY votes as soon as he got to Green Bay.
Last year, the Giants added what they hope to be two enduring pieces to their secondary on Day 2 in safety Tyler Nubin and slot corner Dru Phillips. They have three selection on Day 2 in this year's draft -- one in Round 2 (No. 34 overall) and two in Round 3 (Nos. 65 and 99).

Giants face Tyler Rogers for the first time, get clobbered by Mets 12-6
NEW YORK — After ending their six-game losing streak in extra innings the night before, the San Francisco Giants couldn't keep the jets going Saturday, reverting to erratic offense and mistakes afield. To add to their hurt, longtime Giants reliever Tyler Rogers made his first appearance for the Mets in their 12-6 victory at Citifield, allowing a single to leadoff man Heliot Ramos before retiring the next three hitters. It was Rogers' first outing ever for a club other than San Francisco. On the San Francisco side, it was a relatively new Giants reliever, Matt Gage, who allowed the Mets' game-tying and go-ahead hits when he came in with two on and one out in the fourth. Brandon Nimmo's single made it 4-4, and Francisco Lindor's bunt toward first sent in the second run of the inning. Dom Smith charged the ball, but Gage didn't cover first and Smith couldn't get any outs on the play. (Gage then got Juan Soto to ground out sharply into an inning-ending double play.) San Francisco's bullpen allowed seven more after that, Grant McCray made a throwing error in the eighth, and the Giants, who scored runs in the second, third and fourth innings, couldn't add on against the Mets relief corps until Willy Adames homered with two outs and one on in the ninth. The series brings a lot of old-home vibes; reliever José Buttó made his first appearance for the Giants on Friday after coming over in that Rogers deal, Dom Smith, a former Mets player, knocked in the game-winner for San Francisco in the 10th Friday and crunched a two-run homer off Senga on Saturday, and Wilmer Flores, who remains a fan favorite in New York, had two hits and a walk Friday before leaving with hamstring tightness. Flores said Saturday that he doesn't believe he'll need an IL stint for the minor hamstring tightness he incurred beating out an infield single the night before, and manager Bob Melvin said he believed Flores might even be available to pinch hit this weekend. Flores continues to get big cheers in Mets-land long after leaving as a free agent in 2019. He became something of a folk hero in 2015 when he cried on the field after hearing he'd been traded; that deal with the Brewers wound up not going through, but Flores' reaction endeared him to New Yorkers. 'When you ask people about me here, they only remember me crying,' he said with a smile. Buttó was spotted looking upset in the bullpen after learning he'd been sent away Wednesday, shades of Flores 10 years later. 'The first time you're traded is hard,' Flores said, 'but it's a fantasy to think you're going to play for one team your entire career.' Flores was, along with Justin Verlander, one of the pending free agents not to be traded at the deadline; he has '10 and five' rights, in the league 10-plus years and with his current team five years, so he could turn down any deal, but he said he had not been approached to do so. 'I'm glad I'm still here,' he said. 'They've treated me right.' It's likely the Giants fielded calls on Flores and didn't have interest in moving him, given his value as a clutch pinch hitter and a respected team leader, especially for the Latin players. Melvin said he hadn't been alerted to interest in Flores but said, 'I'm sure there were teams inquiring about him.' Outfielder-first baseman Jerar Encarnacion's rehab assignment at Triple-A Sacramento ended Saturday, so he's expected to join the team in New York. He's a right-handed hitter, meaning that unless Flores goes on the IL, Luis Matos is the most likely player to be sent out. Encarnacion was hitting .348 in his most recent rehab assignment as he returns from an oblique strain, and he was riding a six-game hitting streak going into Saturday.

Browns CB Martin Emerson Jr. suffers achilles injury in training camp
The Cleveland Browns have suffered a significant blow to their defense, potentially losing starting cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. for the season. The former third round pick and standout over the first two seasons of his career suffered an achilles injury in Tuesday's practice and had to be carted off the practice field. It was described as a non-contact injury as the Browns were not in pads for Tuesday's practice. Without speculating too much until results come in from testing, but these are rarely easy injuries to bounce back from quickly. Emerson is coming off a down 2024 season, looking for a bounce-back year in the Cleveland secondary. To make matters worse, Emerson is in a contract year too, looking to earn his worth with the Browns long-term. Now he will have to enter free agency on the heels of a likely significant injury. The Browns will now likely have to ask Greg Newsome II, who plays outside cornerback on base downs before kicking inside to the slot in nickel looks, to play outside full-time. Newsome II is also in a contract year with the Browns and has the opportunity to return to the type of player we saw from him early in his career. And if he does, he will be in line for a good payday. This means Cameron Mitchell or 2024 seventh round pick Myles Harden will be allowed to slide into the nickel cornerback position this season. The Browns also signed former Miami Dolphins' nickel Nik Needham this offseason, and he'll likely get looks inside as well throughout training camp. Regardless, this is a huge loss for the Browns if Emerson is sidelined for the entirety of the 2025 season. Browns QB Shedeur Sanders continues to quietly impress in training camp
Seven days of Cleveland Browns training camp are officially in the books. The headlines have centered around Martin Emerson's injury, Myles Garrett's dominance, and the four-man quarterback competition. Unsurprisingly, Shedeur Sanders has been the talk of the town, making a strong early impression. Throughout his first week of NFL training camp, Sanders has completed 70% of his passes in team drills, with five touchdowns and no interceptions, according to BetMGM. These stats should be taken with a grain of salt, as he is currently facing the second and third-team defenses. Still, having zero turnovers in his initial opportunities has made a positive impact on his reputation in Berea. Shedeur Sanders has consistently made the most of every opportunity to reinforce his image as a hard-working, dedicated athlete. He's been seen on social media putting in extra reps after practice and arriving early—often before his teammates. Off the field, Sanders has built strong connections with both the community and his teammates by participating in charity events and taking time to engage with fans in Berea after practices. The 'Sanders Circus' that many fans thought would enter Cleveland has been anything but that. The Browns will continue to challenge Sanders as the regular season approaches. He took his first reps against the Browns' first-team defense on Wednesday and is expected to earn more opportunities if he continues to progress. The real test for Sanders is likely to come during the Browns' joint practice with the Carolina Panthers on Friday, August 8th, where he will have his first taste of opposing NFL competition.
