
New Cupra Born spotted with a fresh face...but you'll need to look closely
The Cupra Born has been spied testing with a new look, ahead of an unveiling some time in the next six to 12 months.
The Born was the first all-electric model for the brand, sharing many of its key elements with the Volkswagen ID.3, but is now a little off the pace given the technical advances made by the larger Tavascan and forthcoming Raval.
The key exterior changes relate to the front and rear design. At the front, fresh headlights with Cupra's new three-point daytime lighting signature look to be on the cards, along with a redesigned bonnet and lower bumper. Advertisement - Article continues below
At the back, Cupra's new three-dimensional lightbar should provide fresh appeal, accompanied by an illuminated badge and triangular lighting elements. Beneath the camouflage, there's also likely to be a new rear bumper, but one that's in keeping with the Spanish brand's more eccentric design language.
What's less certain are what changes will be made under the skin, both inside the cabin and in terms of powertrain and battery tech. Volkswagen's ID.3 went under a very light facelift last year, gaining upgrades to some interior elements and the infotainment system – only some of which made their way on to the Cupra. However, the VW is in the process of going through a more significant redesign for 2026, which will see major alterations to the exterior design and cabin. With this Cupra prototype already out and about, it would appear that the Born won't get such extensive changes, and will therefore be offered for sale before the new ID.3.
The MEB platform itself has been through a couple of major upgrades, both in terms of efficiency and power, yielding better range and performance. This was reflected on the Born VZ, which picked up a new 79kWh battery pack and high-performance 321bhp electric motor.
There's unlikely to be any substantial changes to the Born's layout, though, with an under-floor battery pack paired to a rear-mounted motor still in place. Inside, we expect to see more improvements made to the digital interfaces, but we'll have to wait to see if VW's promise to bring back key physical controls in its future models extends to Cupra's sportier, more distinctive offerings.
Before this new Born arrives, the all-new supermini-sized Raval will give us clues to Cupra's future thinking in terms of design and interior ergonomics. While we don't yet know when the new Born will be ready for launch, it's expected to be revealed later this year or early next.

Ferrari boss Vasseur hands over to D'Ambrosio for Austrian GP
SPIELBERG, Austria, June 29 (Reuters) - Ferrari Formula One boss Fred Vasseur has left the Austrian Grand Prix to return home for personal reasons with deputy Jerome d'Ambrosio taking over for Sunday's race at Spielberg, the team said. Ferrari had Charles Leclerc set to start on the front row alongside McLaren's pole-sitter Lando Norris and seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton fourth on the grid. The Italian team have yet to win this season and Frenchman Vasseur has come under increasing pressure with speculation about his future. Belgian D'Ambrosio is a former racer who joined Ferrari from Mercedes and has been deputy principal since last October. Before that he was also a team boss with Venturi in the all-electric Formula E series.

Wise (formerly TransferWise) has quietly become one of fintech's biggest success stories, transforming how people and businesses send money across borders. From humble startup origins in 2011, Wise now moves over £145 billion internationally each year for 15+ million customers – at a fraction of the cost charged by banks. In doing so, Wise saved its users an estimated £2 billion in fees in FY2025 alone. It's a rare fintech that's both fast-growing and profitable, pursuing a bold mission encapsulated in its slogan: 'Money without borders – instant, convenient, transparent and eventually free.' This deep dive explores why Wise matters today – covering the massive market it's tackling, its journey and products, the technology and regulatory infrastructure under its hood, its recent financial performance, competitive landscape, and what customers and leadership are saying. A Massive Market Ripe for Disruption Moving money internationally has long been notorious for high costs and hassle. Over £22 trillion crosses borders each year, projected to reach £28 trillion by 2027 as globalization drives more migration, remote work, and global commerce. By Wise's own 2025 estimate, the number may be as high as £32 trillion annually. Historically, this market was dominated by big banks and legacy remittance providers relying on an antiquated correspondent banking network. International transfers often meant 'expensive, slow and inefficient service, reliant on outdated infrastructure,' as Wise's 2023 report bluntly puts it. Banks and incumbents like Western Union layered on fees and hidden exchange rate markups – profiting from customers' lack of transparency. The result: sending money abroad could cost 5-8% in fees (often not obvious upfront) and take days to arrive. Wise was founded to change this status quo. Its vision of 'Money Without Borders' is about making moving money 'as cheap, fast, and convenient as sending an email,' in the words of its co-founder. Wise's core innovation was using technology and clever account structures to eliminate intermediaries and hidden fees, giving users the real mid-market exchange rate and charging only a low upfront fee. As we'll see, this strategy is forcing the industry to evolve. Today, many fintechs and even banks are racing to offer cheaper, easier cross-border payments – yet traditional banks remain Wise's primary competitors, still handling the majority of cross-currency transactions. A growing field of digital challengers (from neobanks like Revolut to PayPal's Xoom and others) are also carving out niches. But Wise has a head start in scale, efficiency, and trust – built over a decade of singular focus on solving this problem. From Startup to Public Company Wise's origin story is a personal one. In 2011, two Estonian friends living in London – Kristo Käärmann and Taavet Hinrikus – grew frustrated with the 'massive problem' of bank fees on international transfers. They started TransferWise that year to help people send money abroad at the true exchange rate. The concept resonated: by 2014, having raised a $58 million Series C to expand globally, TransferWise launched in the US and Australia. The company hit major milestones quickly. It reached its first £1 billion transferred (cumulative) in 2014, and by 2017 was profitable with over £1 billion being moved every month through its platform – a rarity in fintech. Importantly, Wise also became an innovator in financial infrastructure early on. In 2016 it gained direct access to the UK's Faster Payments network (the first tech company to do so), showing a knack for working with regulators to improve speed and cost. Over time, TransferWise broadened its offerings beyond person-to-person remittances. In 2016 it launched its first business accounts for SMEs to send money internationally on better terms. The company's global footprint also expanded: it opened offices around the world (10 offices by 2019, including a European hub in Belgium to navigate Brexit) and set up an Asia-Pacific hub in Singapore in 2017. In 2021, reflecting its broadened mission, TransferWise rebranded to 'Wise.' That same year, Wise went public via a direct listing on the London Stock Exchange – notably, London's largest tech listing ever at the time. The listing valued Wise at ~$11 billion, signaling its arrival as a major fintech player. Philippe Krief: The engineering guru who swapped Ferrari for Renault
A successful one, admittedly – young Krief was rolling around in the back of DS Citroëns and had a soft spot for his father's Peugeot 504 coupé (the Pininfarina one, he reminds me), so delectable metal was on the scene. But it wasn't the impetus. Engineering was the job he always wanted to do, 'so I combined cars with my passion', he says. Engineering was the desire, cars the vessel. The balance has since shifted, and Krief today can't imagine engineering anything else. He says: 'The thing I learned, and that I now know would be difficult not to have, is the soul you give to a car,' he says. 'You can feel it when you test drive it.' I guess you can't get quite the same kick from designing an MRI machine, or even an unmanned rocket. That soundbite is typical Krief talk. He speaks softly, authoritatively, in accented English, enunciating precisely as he describes engineering concepts and management structures, but then often expressing a sentiment that would sound twee coming from anyone else. It helps that 'soul' is very much his oeuvre, as anyone who has tried his back catalogue knows. You get the sense Krief is a unique proposition. On one hand the man is obsessed with quantitative approaches – 'at the end of the day, what makes the car feel [special], even if it looks subjective, can be measured' – and he champions simulators, with their potential to do all the dogsbody bits of chassis development, driving down costs and freeing up talent. But he also firmly believes the human touch is non-negotiable if you're going to create a sports car that is 'completely harmonious in everything'. In many ways he is perfectly suited to taking a romantic brand like Alpine forward into what is, technologically, still rather an unknown space. The extent of Krief's uniqueness as a world-class chassis developer surely stems from his geographically varied and demanding career path. Part of the final year of an engineering degree was spent at Renault, developing early suspension simulation models. It was pioneering stuff in the '80s – and perhaps useful preparation for today's uncertain world. Next was Michelin, when tyre development was still a 'trial and error process'.
