Avengers star unrecognisable in genre-bending horror film now on Amazon Prime
For those who fancy a night in, huddled on the settee with a cushion at the ready to hide behind, there's a top-notch horror film now available to stream for free on Amazon Prime.
Horror films might not be everyone's cup of tea, but when they're done well, they can take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride filled with suspense, relief after a scare, and adrenaline pumping through your veins. They often have a more profound impact on your emotions than your typical action-adventure flick.
If you're in the mood for a fright, then look no further than 2012's critically acclaimed horror The Cabin in the Woods. The film features a barely recognisable Chris Hemsworth and follows a group of university students as they head off to a secluded cabin for what they hope will be a pleasant getaway.
However, their trip quickly turns into a nightmare as they find themselves battling for survival against a relentless onslaught of terrifying creatures in a classic horror setting.
Minor spoilers ahead - but what sets this plot apart is that unbeknownst to the group, their time in the cabin has been meticulously planned out, as they unwittingly become part of a ritualistic sacrifice designed to appease ancient beings threatening to destroy the earth, all overseen by a facility full of bureaucrats dedicated to ensuring their sacrifice, reports the Mirror US.
The film is revolutionary in its approach, cleverly utilising traditional horror tropes but giving them a fresh twist and deeper meaning.
The movie boasts an impressive cast, including Thor's Chris Hemsworth, Grey's Anatomy's Jesse Williams, House of Cards' Kristen Connolly, and The Shape of Water's Richard Jenkins, who play the five students at the centre of the story.
This film breaks new ground by cleverly reworking traditional horror tropes to reveal the underlying themes, earning widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics. With a 92% 'certified fresh' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's a must-watch.
One Google reviewer gave it a 5-star rating, saying: "One of the greatest films ever and not just because it cleverly borrows from HP Lovecraft and others to tell of the horror behind the horror we're so used to."
They added: "Well-written, produced, acted, scored and filmed, TCITW is a winner on so many levels, the less you know about it before screening it, the better. It fully transcends the genre of "horror" plus offers a cute peek into the myths of other cultures. But ultimately, it is NOT what you expect it to be about at all."
Another reviewer praised the film, saying: "I love this movie, I thought it was smart and interesting with twists thrown in that I never saw coming."
The film is now available to stream for free on Amazon Prime Video for subscribers.

Next Bond movie will be written by Oscar nominated filmmaker behind iconic TV show
THE brains behind smash hit show Peaky Blinders has been signed up to write the next James Bond film – and he is promising to make it 'better, stronger and bolder'. Diehard fans of the suave spy had feared Bond would lose its identity after Amazon bought the franchise for $1billion in February. 2 2 But with 65-year-old Brummie Steven Knight at the helm, 007 expert Matthew Field says it is proof its British heritage will be preserved. He told The Sun: 'Amazon could easily have hired an A-list US writer but they chose Knight, a truly great British writer, who understands Bond's importance. 'He has a solid pedigree in film and TV that spans more than 25 years so it will be really exciting to see his world of Bond for a whole new generation of fans.' It is a job that Steven, who also wrote SAS: Rogue Heroes and co-created Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, says was always on his bucket list. Mega signing The youngest of seven children, he was raised by dad George, a blacksmith, and mum Ida, a bookie's runner. He has spoken about how gangster series Peaky Blinders, set in 1920s Small Heath, near Solihull in his home city, was inspired by tales of his dad's gangster uncles and his mum's work. The BBC drama ran for six series from 2013 to 2022, helping to attract record numbers of tourists to England's second city. The final outing became the BBC iPlayer's most streamed series of the year and the show is credited with seeing a resurgence in popularity for the names Arthur and Aida. Soldiers in Ukraine have even adopted the name Peaky Blinders for one of their military units. Married dad-of-seven Steven is a mega signing for Bond alongside Dune director Denis Villeneuve and producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal, known for the Harry Potter and Spider-Man films respectively. Brit acting legend admits he wants to play James Bond saying 'the world's gone crazy' if Amazon casts a US star for 007 Matthew says: 'It's a great collection of creative minds reinventing Bond. It's in really safe hands.' Before screenwriting, Steven trained as a blacksmith but admitted: 'I was useless at it.' After studying English at university, he wrote radio commercials, jingles and promotional game concepts for Capital FM under then-breakfast host Chris Tarrant in the Nineties. One game he developed was Cash Mountain, where players would be able to win an unlimited amount of money answering infinite, increasingly impossible questions until they got one wrong. However, he said: 'No one would insure that just in case, so we had to think of a limit, so we thought, well, a million, why not?' That concept became Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, which peaked at 19.2million viewers per episode and was adapted for around 100 countries. The success of the game show freed Steven to write what he wanted. When the 2022 Commonwealth Games came to Birmingham, he was an obvious choice to co-direct the opening ceremony. The industrial revolution-inspired show featured Sir Lenny Henry, UB40, Duran Duran, Ozzy Osbourne and a 33ft mechanical bull. Two years earlier, he received a CBE for services to drama and the community in Birmingham. He said he planned to celebrate 'Tommy Shelby-style' in reference to the main Peaky Blinders character and his love of whisky and cigarettes. Now the creative force behind Bond, he told BBC Radio 5 Live: 'I'm hoping that, being a Bond fan for so many years, it'll be imbued into me and I'll be able to produce something that's the same but different, and better, stronger and bolder.'

Alex Jones confirms return of her The One Show co-host after lengthy break
The One Show host Alex Jones confirmed the return of her co-host after a lengthy absence from the BBC programme. Alex Jones has disclosed that one of her previous co-presenters is making a comeback to The One Show next week. At the end of Friday's (August 1) programme, the Welsh host, who recently provided an update to her followers, i nformed BBC audiences that Ronan Keating was returning to the iconic green sofa following an extended absence. As the episode ended she announced to viewers: "That's all we've got time for tonight! a big thank you to our guests. "Now, Ronan Keating is back with me on Monday, with guest's Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Ade Edmondson and Helen George." The revelation follows the Boyzone singer's disclosure back in 2023 that he would be presenting fewer programmes owing to his musical obligations, reports Wales Online. In a statement released at the time, Ronan explained: "I'll be doing less shows this year due to my performing and recording schedule but I'm still very much part of the family." Meanwhile in the episode, presenters Alex and Clara Amfo admitted they felt anxious about one specific guest they would be interviewing. As Friday's programme began, BBC viewers witnessed Clara and Alex reveal who would be appearing later in the show. Initially they mentioned Vicky McClure would be performing live later in the programme with Jon McClure's band Reverend and the Makers. Nevertheless, it was actor Sam Claflin who left the pair feeling nervous about welcoming him onto the programme. Clara said: "We're equally excited by somebody else who knows a thing or two about rock'n'roll, actor Sam Claflin blew us away in Daisy Jones and The Six. "Honestly, myself and Al were obsessed with this show, we're a bit worried that he's going to be scared of us later, but we carry on!" Despite this, it appeared Sam was entirely comfortable whilst chatting to the duo, as they discussed his part in the Amazon Prime programme. Playing Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones and The Six, Clara didn't hesitate to enquire whether viewers might anticipate another series. The star responded: "I can't speak for everyone, I can speak for myself. I think we'd love to. It's just not in my hands! It's not my decision unfortunately. "I think getting six actors together with our schedules-obviously, if we were a band, our schedules would be aligned. "But, we're all actors, we all have families, we're all from different parts of the world. The desire is there, but it's out of my hands." The One Show is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
