Cabinet note to be shortly moved for extending Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission till 2030
The five-year term of the scheme that aims to create a national digital health ecosystem ends in March next year, with only a third of the initial ₹1,600 crore allocated for the current phase having been spent.
An Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) note will be first moved, following which the cabinet note will be circulated.
The National Health Authority (NHA), which implements the mission, recently held discussions with states and union territories on the next phase of ABDM, which will focus on covering more people, onboarding private healthcare providers, and using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve healthcare.
ABDM, which was launched in September 2021, has three components—Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA), a digital health ID for each person, and a Health Facility Registry (HFR).
'Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is making efforts to connect healthcare services across the entire country digitally. With the first phase of ABDM set to finish in March next year, the NHA conducted theconsultation with States on ABDM 2.0" last week, the official said, adding states had a vital role to play in building a collaborative and inclusive digital health ecosystem under ABDM.
The official said thatthe focus was on shaping ABDM 2.0 for a 2026-2030 roll-out.
'The talks covered important areas like how to make better use of allocated funds and encourage more people to sign up for digital health records keeper, known as ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account)."
More than 790 million ABHA health IDs of have been created under the platform till date and 638 million health records linked to the system.
Discussions also touched upon how new technologies like AI could be used to improve healthcare and the need for closer teamwork with states. The main aim is to speed up the pace at which both government and private healthcare providers adopt digital ways of working.
'The NHA is now going to evaluate all the ideas and suggestions, following which they will seek the Expenditure Finance Committee approval for the funds needed to upgrade the digital health initiative, following which Cabinet note will be circulated," the official said.
To be sure, only about a third of the initial ₹1,600 crore budget for the current phase has been used so far. The recent meeting is a critical step in building a more efficient and widely available digital healthcare system for everyone in India, making this one of the central government's key initiatives.
Notably, 414,864 health facilities and 666,956 healthcare professionals have been verified and are on board ABDM.
Queries sent to the health ministry spokesperson remained unanswered till press time.
Arpita Mukherjee, professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, said the Indian healthcare system is fragmented and so is the healthcare data.
"So, we have to prioritize digitization. The under utilization of the funds in ABDM may be because government health portals are not interconnected," she said.
Dr. Harsh Mahajan, founder and chief radiologist, Mahajan Imaging & Labs, said the next phase of the mission will be even more important than the first one. "Bringing private healthcare providers on board and using technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) can improve how we diagnose and treat patients. In diagnostics, for example, AI can help doctors read scans more quickly and spot problems earlier.
'When this is supported by easy access to a patient's health records, it leads to better decisions and faster treatment. This is not just about technology. It is about making healthcare more connected and more focused on the patient," he said.

Make doctor's appointments, get lab reports on one platform: Delhi CM rolls out hospital management system
Patients can now make doctor's appointments, get lab reports, view and pay their medical bills at Delhi's government hospitals — all through a single digital platform, said Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta as she digitally inaugurated the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) on Thursday. 'Appointments can be scheduled from home, eliminating long queues. Once a patient presents their health card, treatment can begin immediately,' she said. Along with the HIMS, Gupta also launched 34 new Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, and 8 new Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs). Addressing the event at the Delhi Secretariat, the CM said over 93 lakh ABHA IDs (Ayushman Bharat Health Account IDs) have also been created, providing every resident with a digital health card. 'This card will allow citizens to access medical services in any hospital, anywhere, based on their medical history,' she noted. She also said the digitisation of hospitals is a reflection of the Capital's progress and commitment to quality healthcare. While inaugurating the Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, the CM said, the new centres will soon be dedicated to the public by MLAs in their respective constituencies. The government is planning to open 15 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in every constituency operating as primary health centres, offering multiple lab tests and essential services, she added. The event also saw Health Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh announcing the government's plans to establish 1,139 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across the Capital. The CM also claimed that corruption in medicine procurement has been effectively eliminated. 'All purchases are now processed digitally. We addressed the issue of overpriced medicines earlier by opening Jan Aushadhi Kendras. To strengthen healthcare delivery, we have also initiated permanent recruitment. Over 1,350 nursing positions that had remained vacant for over a decade have now been filled,' she added.

Now, book OPD appointments at 35 govt hospitals online
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday launched the Health Information Management System (HIMS), calling it a major leap towards digital, transparent and accessible healthcare in Delhi. The new system will allow patients to book OPD appointments online, receive digital OPD slips, and access their medical records in real-time—eliminating the need to queue up at govt hospitals. Gupta also digitally inaugurated 34 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs and eight Jan Aushadhi Kendras during an event held at Delhi Secretariat. Developed in collaboration with the ministry of health and family welfare and based on the NextGen e-Hospital platform, HIMS is integrated with Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs. Over 93 lakh ABHA IDs were already generated in Delhi, officials said. "This is a big relief for the people of Delhi, who will no longer have to stand in long lines or run from counter to counter. Everything is going digital," said Gupta. The platform will connect patients, doctors, and hospitals on one centralised network, making medical treatment more efficient and streamlined, she added. They didn't even appoint full-time medical superintendents. One MS was managing four hospitals. No permanent doctors, nurses, or paramedical staff were hired. They couldn't even complete one hospital in their tenure." Gupta also alleged that the previous govt left 24 hospitals incomplete and failed to operationalise seven ICU hospitals announced during the Covid-19 pandemic. "What they left behind were just empty porta cabins and iron structures. There were no doctors, no medicines, and no accountability," she said. There was no response from AAP to these allegations. Gupta further said her govt was now constructing seven new super-specialty hospitals and was committed to completing them on time. "We will make Delhi a hub of world-class healthcare and modern facilities so that patients from across the country can come here for treatment," she added. The 34 newly inaugurated Ayushman Mandirs are spread across areas such as Shilampur, Kalkaji, Burari, Karol Bagh, Paschim Vihar, Malviya Nagar and Gandhi Nagar. These centres will offer a range of primary health services, including vaccinations, maternal and child care, yoga sessions and wellness counselling. Health minister Pankaj Singh said that 68 Ayushman Mandirs were made operational in just a month. "This is not a govt of advertisements. This is a govt that works," he added. The eight new Jan Aushadhi Kendras—opened in govt hospitals—will provide essential medicines at subsidised rates. Seventeen such outlets were launched earlier this year, and more are expected soon.

Delhi Chief Minister Launches New Health Information Management System
New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday rolled out the expanded Health Information Management System (HIMS) and said that people will no longer need to queue up to take appointments as it will be possible to book them online. She also inaugurated 34 Ayushman Mandirs and eight Jan Aushadhi Kendras. The HIMS, based on the NextGen e-Hospital software, integrates Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs, allowing for secure and centralised tracking of patient health data, officials said. Gupta described the HIMS as a crucial step towards transparency and efficiency in public healthcare. "It's a huge relief for the people of Delhi, who will no longer have to stand in long queues or run from pillar to post. Everything is going digital," she said. Over 93 lakh ABHA IDs have already been generated in Delhi, she said. — Rekha Gupta (@gupta_rekha) July 24, 2025 "The health data of every patient will now be digitally recorded, making it easier for doctors to provide continued and effective treatment. This digital platform will connect hospitals, doctors and patients on one network," she added. Taking a swipe at the previous AAP government, Gupta said that while thousands of crores of rupees were invested in the name of healthcare, not a single project was completed. "Covid came and went, but even then, they could not make a single hospital operational. They left behind foundation pillars and iron porta cabins. There were no medicines, no doctors and no accountability," she said. The CM said Delhi will be developed as a hub of super-speciality hospitals and modern facilities to ensure people from across the country come here for quality treatment. According to officials, the HIMS will allow patients to book appointments online, receive digital OPD slips, and access their health records in real time. It is already live for OPD registrations in 35 government hospitals and will soon be implemented across all public health institutions in a phased manner, the officials said. The 34 Ayushman Mandirs inaugurated by the CM are located in Shilampur, Kalkaji, Burari, Yamuna Vihar, Gandhi Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Shakur Basti, Paschim Vihar and Begaumpur, among other areas. The officials said these centres will offer a range of primary health services, including vaccination, maternal and child care, wellness counselling and yoga sessions. Health Minister Pankaj Singh said the government has set up a total of 68 Ayushman Mandirs within a month, and that Delhi's health infrastructure is being strengthened rapidly. The current government is focused on delivering results and completing unfinished projects that were pending for years, he said. "This is not a government of advertisements, this is a government that works." The eight new Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which will offer essential medicines at subsidised rates, have been opened in government hospitals for the welfare of the economically disadvantaged. Singh said 17 such centres were opened earlier this year, and more will be added in the coming months.
