People losing faith in police, administration: Ram Kripal

Time of India15 hours ago
Patna: After LJP (RV) chief Chirag Paswan, senior BJP leader and former Union minister Ram Kripal Yadav on Monday expressed serious concern over the frequent murders taking place in Patna and other parts of the state.
Talking to this newspaper, Ram Kripal asked: "Yeh kya ho raha hai. If this is the crime situation in Patna where all the top officials sit, then one can imagine the situation in remote areas of Bihar. Police and administration must control the situation, otherwise people are losing faith in them," he said on way to meet the bereaved family of party leader Surendra Kewat, who was shot dead by unidentified criminals Saturday night.
Ram Kripal, once considered as the 'Hanuman' of RJD chief Lalu Prasad before he parted ways and twice became the BJP MP from Patliputra constituency by defeating Lalu's daughter Misa Bharti in 2014 and 2019 before losing to her in 2024 Lok Sabha polls, however, praised CM Nitish Kumar for prompt action in the businessman Gopal Khemka murder case.
But he said, "Public perception matters a lot and there is no better example of this than that of Lalu, who was thrown out of power on the twin issues of corruption and crime."

He was referring to the state assembly elections scheduled this year.
He blamed the police for the rising crime and sought investigation into the involvement of RJD people, as has been alleged by BJP leader and deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sinha.
But he said, "Hatya ka daur jyada hin ho raha hai. Kahin to full stop lagega. It's a matter of worry as people are feeling insecure and losing faith in the police. The administration must act tough against criminals to revive people's faith in the system."
Earlier, Union minister Chirag Paswan raised his concern and asked, "How many more murders will Biharis face now? It is beyond understanding what is the responsibility of Bihar Police."

BJP welcomes CAT stay on Urdu mandate for Naib Tehsildar posts in J&K

The BJP on Monday welcomed the decision of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) for staying the government order making Urdu mandatory for applying to the post of Naib Tehsildar in Jammu and Kashmir. The CAT directed the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Recruitment Board (SSRB) to accept applications from candidates who possess a graduation with knowledge of any of the five official languages Hindi, Kashmiri, English, Dogri, and Urdu. The Bharatiya Janata Party legislative party on Monday held a dharna in front of the Civil Secretariat and Assembly to lodge their protest and press for the revocation of the government order making Urdu mandatory for Naib Tehsildar examinations in Jammu and Kashmir. "We welcome the decision of the CAT to stay this illegal and discriminatory order of the National Conference government. It is our victory", Senior High Court lawyer and MLA R S Pathania told reporters here. The bench comprising Member (A) Ram Mohan Johri and Member (J) Rajinder Singh Dogra had given the verdict on the matter. The applicants, represented by Senior Advocate Abhinav Sharma and Advocate Abhirash Sharma, challenged the Urdu language condition as being "ultra vires the Constitution of India," citing violations of the principles of equality and non-discrimination. CAT issued notices to the respondents, directing them to file their reply within four weeks from the date of this order. The next date of hearing is fixed for August 13. BJP MLA said that it is good news that CAT has stayed the government order on Urdu. "All candidates can now file their applications for the post of Naib Tehsildars. There is no discrimination on the basis of language ", he said. The Union minister laid out a vision for an ecologically sustainable growth model that can blend commerce with carbon credits (Image: PTI) Municipal solid and liquid waste in India can be turned into a Rs 5-lakh-crore business, Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari said in his inaugural address at The Times of India Social Impact Summit in Mumbai. 'With the right approach, we can convert waste into wealth, create jobs, and address environmental concerns,' he said. 'Plastics can be turned into fuel, sewage into industrial-grade water, and even garbage into commercially viable products,' he added. Citing a project in Mathura that treats sewage flowing into the Yamuna, he said, 'That treated water is now being used by nearby Indian Oil refinery.' The particulates are treated with organic culture while the extracted sludge is turned into bio-flocculants. 'If we scale this up nationally, the potential is enormous,' he said. Gadkari drew from personal experience, saying: 'For the past nine years, I have been selling treated toilet water from my constituency, earning Rs 300 crore annually.' He highlighted clean energy as another area of potential. 'Thermal plants have traditionally used coal, but NTPC and the Maharashtra govt have started using biomass—also known as white coal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo It costs Rs 7 per unit but is far cleaner,' he said. Tree plantations around mines can earn carbon credits,' he said. A deeper rethinking of CSR in India is the need of the hour, said Sivakumar Sundaram, CEO (Publishing), The Times of India. 'India's CSR investment was approximately Rs 30,000 crore last year,' he said. 'But more important than the quantum is the quality—how we measure impact, how we embed sustainability into strategy, and how we turn compliance into conscience.' Balasore campus horror: Congress calls 'Odisha Bandh' on July 17; accuse BJP of 'cover up'

BHUBANESWAR: The Congress party has called for an "Odisha Bandh" on July 17 following the death of a 20-year-old BEd student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, who had attempted self-immolation after alleging sexual harassment by a faculty member. The student, who sustained 90% burn injuries, died at AIIMS Bhubaneswar late Monday night despite intensive medical care. Her death has triggered widespread outrage and political uproar across the state. On Tuesday morning, tensions flared outside AIIMS Bhubaneswar as Congress workers staged a protest, demanding justice for the victim. Protesters were later detained by police. AIIMS Bhubaneswar stated that the woman was brought to the casualty unit on July 12 after being referred from the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital. She was admitted to the burns ICU but could not be revived despite advanced treatment. Congress has slammed the state government for failing to act on the woman's harassment complaints and accused authorities of negligence, demanding accountability from both the college administration and the state. Congress leader Yashir Nawaz slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of attempting to cover up the incident. He demanded strict action against those responsible. "They are trying to cover the incident with the help of is the fault of the BJP government. Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj must be removed. There must be strict action against those responsible. The government, with the help of the police, want to take the body away after the postmortem. There is no action against the Higher Education Minister; he has not been sacked. No action has been taken against those responsible, " Nawaz said. Nawaz further remarked that it was deeply unfortunate the student had to plead for justice and ultimately lost her life while fighting for dignity and self-respect. "It is so unfortunate that a student begged for justice to the MP, SP, principal, Higher Education Minister and the CM, but even after being an ABVP leader, she was not safe. She lost her lie for her dignity and self-respect. We are protesting because they are conducting the post-mortem at 2 am. When we met the AIIMS doctors in the evening, they clearly told us that she was 95% burnt, she had low chances of survival, " he further added.
