38 Arrested Over 'Beef Head' Incident In Assam's Dhubri, CM Vows Strict Action Against Culprits

In response to the rising communal tensions following reports of desecration of a Hindu temple in Assam's Dhubri district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the police have arrested 38 people.
The police have arrested 38 people in an overnight crackdown after the 'beef head" incident, Sarma said in a post on X.
The Assam Chief Minister also issued shoot-at-sight orders in the state's Dhubri district, which borders Bangladesh. During a visit to violence-hit areas, Sarma said the act of throwing a cow's head near a temple should never have occurred and vowed strict action against those responsible.
In a post on X, Sharma wrote, 'I visited Dhubri and directed law enforcement officers to follow ZERO tolerance against elements who desecrate our temples, Naamghars and sacred spaces. The incident of throwing beef at the town's Hanuman Mandir should have NEVER happened, and those involved WON'T BE SPARED."
He also held a high-level meeting in Dhubri with DGP Harmeet Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tiwari, and other senior officials of the state administration.
The Chief Minister stated that Dhubri's law and order situation had been deteriorating for over a week. The trouble began on June 7, a day after Eid al-Adha, when a cow's severed head was discovered in front of a Hanuman temple, prompting calls for peace from both Hindu and Muslim communities. Unfortunately, similar incidents, including stone-pelting, recurred the following day.
Sarma also revealed that provocative posters were put up a day before Bakrid by an organisation called 'Nabin Bangla,' which expressed intentions to merge Dhubri with Bangladesh. 'Such elements are clearly trying to disrupt peace," the CM said.
He said that if required, he would guard the Hanuman Temple for the whole night. 'We cannot allow a section of the community to create such disturbances. Our government will not tolerate this and allow Dhubri to go out of our hands," Sarma asserted.
Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath stated that the situation in Dhubri town is currently under control. 'We've revoked yesterday's order, and shops and markets have reopened," he told PTI.

Himanta: Non-tribals on forest land will be evicted — period
1 2 Guwahati: Amid Assam's most aggressive land reclamation drive to date, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he has ordered a sweeping crackdown on forest encroachments across all districts of the state. He said here on Friday that all district commissioners have been tasked with conducting immediate surveys and initiating evictions, sparing only those protected under the Forest Rights Act, 2006 (Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006). The directive is clear—enforce the law and reclaim the land. "Tribal communities who lived in forests before 2005 are protected under law. Everyone else will be evicted, period," Sarma said here on Friday, adding that the scale of encroachment is staggering. "Even at one eviction per month, it will take a decade to reclaim the land," he added. Since May 2021, when Sarma's government came to power, over 1.19 lakh bighas (approximately 160 sq km) of land has been cleared, evicting nearly 50,000 people. Two men transporting cattle tied up, made to squat, 2 held: Bengal Police
TWO MEN were beaten, tied up and made to squat allegedly by members of a Hindu outfit, accompanied by some BJP workers, in Durgapur on Friday after they were spotted transporting cattle – including cows – police said. Two persons were arrested in connection with the incident, they added. Citing local residents, police sources said that the two men, who belong to another community, claimed that they were returning from Barjora of Bankura district after 'purchasing cows for agricultural purposes.' However, the BJP claimed that the men were asked to show proper documents regarding the purchase of cows but could not do so. Some BJP workers staged a protest over the incident. TMC MLA from Pandabeswar, Narendranath Chakraborty, said, 'This can't be allowed in Bengal. We have approached the police and demanded stern action against those who did this.' In a post on X later in the day, the West Bengal Police wrote, 'Two persons belonging to a minority community, while carrying cattle for farming purposes, were detained and severely beaten up in Durgapur by some hooligans… A case has been registered over the incident and two of the miscreants have been arrested. Raids are on to apprehend all those involved…' The police added, 'Nothing and no one will be allowed to dent our state's tradition of inclusivity and harmony.
