The senior BJP leader held urgent discussions with Union ministers Pralhad Joshi and Piyush Goyal after former MLA and Prahar Janshakti Party leader Bacchu Kadu initiated a hunger strike in Amravati, demanding a Rs24 base price and the elimination of middlemen control.
Following the protest, Bawankule convened a high-level meeting at Vidhan Bhavan this week, attended by ministers Jaykumar Rawal (Marketing), Manikrao Kokate (Agriculture), and senior officials from various departments.
The discussions focused on overhauling the procurement system to ensure farmers receive fair compensation for their produce.
"The primary objective is to prevent farmers from distress-selling. We are working on a mechanism in consultation with the Centre to ensure transparent, efficient procurement directly from the producers," Bawankule stated, emphasizing that onion farmers must not depend on commission agents.
Marketing minister Rawal argued that the current system had been dominated by a few vested interests operating intermediary procurement centres. "Procurement and exports are unrelated. The system must be corrected. Farmers must get the benefit, not middlemen," he asserted, proposing the closure of all non-transparent procurement centres.
Agriculture minister Kokate supported this view, stating, "All govt procurement should be routed through APMCs.

It's the only way to guarantee traceability, fair pricing, and systematic procurement."
Bacchu Kadu, who ended his fast following the state's assurance, reiterated that central agencies like the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) and NAFED should buy onions directly from markets or farmers, not from agents. "A base price of Rs24 per kg should be fixed immediately. Onion procurement from outside the APMC system must stop," he demanded.
In the last procurement cycle, delays and poor storage conditions caused significant spoilage, with thousands of tonnes of onions rotting in godowns. Farmer groups have warned of a repeat if corrective steps are not implemented immediately.

Bengaluru to get 4,500 electric buses under PM e-Drive scheme
The city is set to receive a significant boost in green public transport with the allocation of 4,500 electric buses under the Union government's PM e-Drive scheme. The development follows a nationwide tender floated by the Centre-owned Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL), which falls under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model as per the Ministry of Heavy Industries guidelines. The CESL tender, issued last month, aims to procure, operate, and maintain 10,900 electric buses across five major cities, with Bengaluru alone slated to receive the largest share. The tender also covers the development of supporting infrastructure such as charging stations and related civil works. The Karnataka government had submitted a formal proposal in May, seeking the inclusion of the State in the Centrally sponsored scheme. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy had personally submitted the request to Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy, highlighting the urgent need to improve public transport in urban areas like Bengaluru. Responding to the State's request, Mr. Kumaraswamy had earlier assured that Karnataka would 'definitely' be allocated buses under the scheme. The PM e-Drive initiative, with a budget outlay of ₹10,900 crore, aims to deploy 14,028 electric buses across nine major Indian cities between April 2024 and March 2026. Discussions between the Centre and participating State governments are ongoing to finalise plans for the necessary infrastructure, including bus depots, charging points, and maintenance facilities. In September 2024, the Union Cabinet approved a scheme with a total outlay of ₹10,900 crore to support the procurement of electric buses and the installation of over 72,000 charging stations across cities and highways, aiming to reduce 'range anxiety' among electric vehicle users. The scheme will allocate a total of ₹4,391 crore for the procurement of 14,028 electric buses by State transport undertakings in nine cities with population exceeding 40 lakh, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad.

Little food: Congress leader flags abuse in Bengal rehab centre to Mamata Banerjee
Congress leader and former Union Minister Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding a thorough investigation into alleged malpractices and inhumane treatment at de-addiction centres across the the letter, Chowdhury alleged that some police stations are financially involved with certain de-addiction centres and that 'looting is taking place in the name of de-addiction.' He wrote, 'There is information that some police stations have financial dealings with certain de-addiction centres and looting is taking place in the name of de-addiction. People kept in these centres are subjected to severe mental torture.'advertisementChowdhury also detailed serious instances of abuse and torture within these centres. 'Those who are put in and stay in the Punishment Room face brutal abuse. They are given very little food, and four people are forced to bathe together naked, that too within a time span of 1 to 2 minutes,' he said. Chaudhary further claimed that the inmates lack basic human rights and hygiene facilities. 'The inmates do not have enough space to sleep properly, and are not allowed to use the toilet whenever they need to, with access allowed only once every 3 hours, and that too, for a short duration. They are made to drink water from the tube-well which is foul-smelling and unhygienic,' Chowdhury also accused the centres of extorting the families of the inmates. 'When a family member visits an inmate, a fee of Rs 400 is charged for the meeting. In the case of each in-mate, exorbitant amounts of money are demanded, ranging from Rs 8,000 in some cases to Rs 24,000, which can stretch up to even Rs 47,000. At the time of release, an additional Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 is charged. Thus, basically, they extract as much money as they possibly can from each person,' the letter that many of the people admitted to these centres have no history of drug use, Chowdhury said, 'There are many innocent people who have no involvement with drug use whatsoever and are yet falsely implicated and sent to these 'homes'. Huge sums of money are being earned by those running the centres, with the connivance of those in Authority.'He specifically named Disha Home in Berhampore, located near Panchanantala, as one of the centres allegedly involved in such concluded his letter by urging Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to launch a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#West Bengal
