Aldi permanently changes name of store in a move shoppers are calling 'biblical'

Metro3 days ago
There's a major change afoot for an Aldi store in Greater Manchester, which is getting a permanent new name: Aldeh.
In honour of the Oasis reunion, and the Mancunian accent, the budget retailer changed the name of its Prestwich store, near to Heaton Park where the iconic band is playing its homcoming gigs.
The tribute was only meant to be temporary, but it turns out people were 'mad fer it' and it's now set to stay in place for good.
The sign had fans queuing up outside the supermarket for selfies and a petition was launched by Manchester local Ella Curtis to keep the rebrand, which was backed by Bury MP Christian Wakefield and received over 1,300 signatures.
'What started as a nod to a special reunion quickly took on a life of its own. The rebrand resonated with people across Manchester and beyond,' she wrote.
'Photos of the sign went viral because it tapped into something meaningful: pride in where we're from, and in what this city has given the world. In short, Prestwich got its own Blue Plaque.'
The sign has since been listed on Google Maps as a cultural landmark, alongside a string of five-star reviews.
One visitor declared it 'the Stonehenge of a generation', while one person dubbed it 'Biblical' (as Liam Gallagher would say).
'Went in for some milk and bread, came out with a renewed sense of Mancunian pride,' another wrote.
Aldi previously teased fans on social media about making the sign a permanent fixture. 'Boss said we also need 10,000 likes and a comment from one of the Gallaghers,' the Facebook post read.
Liam Gallagher himself was on board with the name change, sharing a picture of the 'Aldeh' sign on his Instagram.
The rebrand was also supported by Noel's daughter Anais, who commented on Aldi's TikTok post in support. And, with the Facebook post receiving over 15,000 likes, Aldi had no choice but to keep the sign.
Giles Hurley, chief executive officer at Aldi UK, confirmed the move on LinkedIn. 'Last week, a petition was launched by a local resident calling for us to keep the sign. More Trending
'So naturally, we took to social media to see what our shoppers thought, turns out… people are mad for it and want the sign to stay.
'I'm pleased to announce that we'll be keeping the Aldeh sign as a tribute to Manchester! As you were.'
Julie Ashfield, Aldi's chief commercial officer, added: 'We've been blown away by the public's reaction to 'Aldeh'. What started as a fun, temporary tribute to Oasis and the local accent has turned into something far bigger.
'We've heard shoppers loud and clear and we're absolutely delighted to keep the sign up for the long haul.'

Shoppers spot new flavour of chocolate Maltesers pouches on shelves with twist on festive favourite

SHOPPERS have spotted a new flavour of Maltesers pouches on the shelves with a twist on a festive favourite. One user picked up dozens of likes and comments this week for her review of the treat on Instagram after finding a pack of five in a huge supermarket. 1 Several chocolate fans have posted photographs of Maltesers Mini Reindeers Gingerbread Flavour on social media. It comes just days after shoppers spotted White Chocolate Maltesers as part of the meal deal options at Asda. The Mini Reindeers snack is on sale in Asda for £1.80. They are currently out of stock at Tesco and not yet listed at Aldi or Lidl. Another_snack_reviewer described the new pouches as "milk chocolate with a gingerbread flavour malt filling and honeycombed pieces". They added: "Yes, I realise this is a Christmas product and yes I realise it's only July. But I've always said if it's on the shelves then I'm gonna buy it! "I'm a big fan of the reindeer/bunny range (white chocolates are obviously the best) so I was super excited to see a new flavour!" The review continued: "Unfortunately these didn't quite do it for me. "While the malty, honeycomb flavour was there and the texture was the usual creamy yet crunchy one which I love, the gingerbread just wasn't strong enough against the other elements. "It did come through more in the aftertaste but I still would have preferred it to be a tad punchier." This prompted several responses from other users. One wrote: "Shame as I was so excited for the gingerbread flavour of these" while another wrote: "OMG Christmas food reviews in July? I kid I kid! "If they're selling it, you've gotta review it. "Very sad to hear they aren't that tasty though. I'll stick to my favourite reindeer, the mint one." 'Add the ginger!' Another posted: "Aww nooooo I was so hoping these would be full on gingerbread." A fourth user said: "Just add more ginger, don't know if its a cost saving or worried people would find them too gingery but seriously, people who don't like ginger aren't gonna buy them so people who will buy them clearly like ginger. Add the ginger!" One user lamented: "The saddest news I've heard all week. "Was so looking forward to these as well!" Maltesers' new white chocolate snacks are available at major retailers — but sweet lovers will need to act fast before they sell out. Originally aimed at "dieting women", White Chocolate Maltesers were the white-chocolate version of Maltesers. The key difference between them and the original was that, instead of being covered in milk chocolate, they were covered in a delicious white chocolate coating. Maltesers are round balls of malted milk covered in chocolate. They were launched in 1937 after being created by American Forrest Mars Sr. Maltesers were first released in the UK and were originally aimed at "dieting women" as a "lighter" way to enjoy chocolate. They have since become popular across Europe and in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Where can you buy discontinued chocolate bars? Here's where you can pick up the Breakaway, Caramac, Milky Way Crispy Rolls and Yorkie biscuit bars. Breakaway bars are still going for packs of eight in some stores, check out: Iceland - £1 Sainsbury's - £1.25 Tesco - £1.25 Caramac bars will be tough to find as they go viral as soon as they are spotted, try: Iceland - £1.25 (packs of three) Sainsbury's - 75p single bar B&M - £1.25 (packs of three) Yorkie biscuit bars are still stocked in quite a few supermarkets, check out: Ocado - £1.25 single bar Tesco - £1.25 single bar Asda - £1.25 single bar Fan favourite Milky Way Crispy Rolls have been spotted in stores despite being discontinued back in 2022.
