Colts pass on QB, pick top pass rusher in 7-round mock draft of active NFL players

In a unique 7-round mock draft of active NFL players, the Colts pass on a quarterback and take the top pass rusher instead.
The Indianapolis Colts were the first team not to select a quarterback in a very unique seven-round mock draft put together by Chad Reuter of NFL.com.
In this mock, rather than selecting the top college prospects or redrafting past drafts, Reuter selected only active NFL players. In doing so, he had one goal in mind for each team, which was to "win now."
So, which non-quarterback did the Colts prioritize selecting in this mock draft, and what did their seven-man draft class end up looking like overall?
The Indianapolis Colts picked DE Myles Garrett in the first round
Of course, in a quarterback-driven league, those players dominated the first round of this mock. The Colts were one of just a couple of teams that did not pick this position.
So, with the Colts able to take the best non-quarterback in the draft, they selected Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett.
This past season, Garrett totaled 83 pressures and 14 sacks, according to PFF. He's recorded at least 14 sacks in five straight seasons and has had 70-plus pressures over the last four years.
Up to this point in his career, Garrett is a six-time Pro Bowler, a four-time All-Pro, and he was the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year.
Who else did the Colts pick in this mock draft
Perhaps in a fitting fashion, even in this mock draft, the Colts will have some question marks at quarterback. Wilson will be on his third team in three seasons this year, and while his numbers on the surface are solid during that span, the overall offensive output from his units hasn't quite been there. The 2023 Broncos and the 2024 Steelers were both ranked in the bottom third in points per game and yards per play.
McBride provides a high-end pass-catching presence from the tight end position, while Harrison Jr. gets to return home to play for the Colts.
As GM Chris Ballard would, the Colts prioritized the trenches in Reuter's mock, picking two offensive linemen and a defensive lineman, while Bates brings really good ball production to the back end of the defense.
To see which current Colts players were selected in this mock draft, you can find that here.

A CFL team owns Shedeur Sanders' negotiation rights. Here's what that means

Shedeur Sanders is preparing for his rookie season with the Cleveland Browns after being selected in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders joined a crowded Browns quarterback room that was already comprised of 40-year-old veteran Joe Flacco, 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett and third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel. The four men are expected to battle both to be Cleveland's starting quarterback while also jockeying for position on the depth chart as whole. While much of the focus surrounding Sanders is about his first season in Cleveland, the Browns aren't the only professional football team that owns his rights. The Toronto Argonauts – a long-time member of the CFL – have Sanders on their negotiation list, meaning they are the only team that can sign the former Colorado quarterback should he ever want to play in the league. Here's what to know about the CFL's negotiation list and why Sanders is one of many young, NFL quarterbacks on it. Which CFL team owns rights to Shedeur Sanders? The Toronto Argonauts currently own the exclusive CFL negotiation rights to Sanders. Should the current Browns quarterback ever want to play in Canada, he would have to negotiate a contract with Toronto to make that happen. It isn't clear how long the Argonauts have owned Sanders' rights, as CFL teams are allowed to add college players to their negotiation lists. The league made the full negotiation lists public for the first time on Wednesday, July 2. EXCLUSIVE: Why did Shedeur Sanders slide in draft? NFL team execs give blunt views What is the CFL's negotiation list? Each of the CFL's nine teams maintains a negotiation list of "up to 45 players who are currently either unsigned or are playing in the NFL, in another professional league, or in college," according to the CFL's official website. Teams hold the exclusive CFL negotiating rights to the players included on their lists. Players can be added or removed from the list at any time, and teams are also allowed to trade the rights to players on their negotiation lists to other clubs within the league. Is Shedeur Sanders going to the CFL? Just because Sanders is included on one of the CFL's negotiation lists does not mean he is going to play in the league. It simply means the Argonauts will retain his CFL rights if he ever does decide to play north of the border. But if Sanders accomplishes his goal and carves out a long-term NFL career, he will not join the Canadian league. NFL ROOKIES TO WATCH: Ashton Jeanty headlines most explosive players in 2025 Other QBs on CFL's negotiation list Sanders is far from the only NFL quarterback on a CFL team's negotiation list. Many of the league's clubs stockpile the rights to high-end college quarterbacks and back-end NFL roster candidates in the hopes one will eventually decide to join their teams. Sanders is among the most notable, with Saskatchewan Roughriders stash Trey Lance – the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft – also being among the best-know candidates on the combined lists. Below is a look at the quarterbacks on the CFL's negotiation list for all nine teams, along with their alma maters or the most recent college program for which they played. Giants' Malik Nabers one of NFL's most targeted safety blankets

Malik Nabers set an NFL record for receptions by a rookie wide receiver last season (109), also amassing 1,204 receivng yards and seven touchdowns. Nabers was also at the top of the passing target list with 170, second only Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase (175), but Nabers had the highest targets per game in the league (11.3). Another stat Nabers where Nabers was high on the list is threat rate. which is simply 'target rate based on the number of routes the player runs' or the 'highest target rates among NFL wide receivers when their quarterback faced pressure' per Pro Football Focus. Nabers ranked sixth with a threat rate of 19.1 percent, as per PFF. For scale, Atlanta's Drake London ranked first at 21.1 percent. Last year's sixth-overall draft pick saw 41 targets with his quarterback under duress last season, the most for a rookie receiver since 2020. Nabers and Ladd McConkey were the only rookies to be targeted more than 25 times in such situations, and Nabers also tied McConkey with 24 catches. He finished with 311 receiving yards, 16 first downs and four touchdown catches. Nabers also ranked eighth in yards after the catch (79) and yards after contact (35) and generated the fourth-best deep target rate (31.7%) in pressure situations. Nabers missed two games with a concussion or he would have surely led the NFL in targets last season. Still, he had a complaint about his usage, especially early in games. The Giants rectified that as the season went on. This year, there will be more mouths to feed on the Giants' offense and there should be better protection from the offensive line. In addition to the new faces in the quarterback room, those factors could lead to Nabers seeing a reduction in overall targets but an uptick in production.
