Apple's odd-sized iPhone Fold should learn a thing or two from the Galaxy Z Fold 7

Phone Arena3 days ago
The iPhone Fold, the first foldable by Apple, is nigh and will obviously go after Samsung and its Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 8, depending on when Cupertino's bijou drops.I say "obviously" because today, most people still go with Samsung's handsets, when it comes to foldables. Sammy is the go-to brand for such devices, even after it took a heavy blow from Huawei. As we've told you, Samsung's lead in market share is expected to shrink significantly, dropping from 45.2% in 2024 to 35.4% this year. Meanwhile, Huawei is holding steady with 34.3 percent, putting it within striking distance of overtaking Samsung for the top spot. That's because in China, people prefer to buy Huawei foldables (duh!), but not in the US – Huawei has been suffering US-imposed sanctions for years now. That's why it's important for Apple to come up with a foldable that's beyond "just good" – Cupertino has a loyal fan base and I do believe that foldables will be mainstream (once those ~$2,000 price tags make way for cheaper models). It remains to be seen if Tim Cook and Co. are able to pull it off. In 2025, AI is also pretty important for virtually all phone makers out there. But it's precisely Apple that is lagging behind: the delay of the AI-enhanced Siri is a fiasco, truth to be told.

Even though the iPhone Fold is still over a year away, rumors are already making waves – and these waves make waves in my head as well. I already told you how Samsung should be paying attention. One of the most talked-about details is Apple's rumored battery size, possibly between 5,000 and 5,500 mAh. That's a big leap compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 's 4,272 mAh. If Apple manages to fit a large battery into a sleek foldable, Samsung will be forced to up its battery game in the future as well.
Samsung's z Fold 7 model prioritizes thinness. But Apple's entry could shift the narrative. A bigger battery combined with iOS's efficiency could give the iPhone Fold a serious edge in endurance – maybe even a true two-day phone. That kind of performance would instantly raise the bar for what users expect in premium foldables. It goes the other way, too.
Render of the iPhone Fold. | Image credit – AppleInsider While Apple's rumored foldable and its XL battery could pressure Samsung to boost the mAh numbers, Apple itself shouldn't lose sight of why people buy foldables in the first place: screen size. Duh!
Recent leaks suggest the iPhone Fold may come with a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch cover screen – both noticeably smaller than what the Galaxy Z Fold 7 offers today. Samsung's newest Fold not only boasts a roomier 8-inch main screen but finally fixes one of its biggest weaknesses with a wider, more usable 6.5-inch cover display. That change alone has transformed the experience, making it feel more like a regular phone when folded, and less like a tall, awkward remote. If Apple chooses to stick with more compact dimensions, it might appeal to users who prioritize portability – but it risks disappointing those who expect a foldable to deliver true tablet-like utility. After all, the whole point of owning a foldable is to unfold something significantly bigger than a regular smartphone. Apple might win on design, battery life, or durability, but if the screen size falls short, it could limit the device's appeal. There's nothing wrong with going smaller – if it's done with purpose – but Apple should be careful not to undershoot expectations in a space where bigger often means better.Funny enough, in one of our polls regarding the iPhone Fold screen size, the results between the "Both screens need to be bigger" and "That sounds like enough screen real estate for me" options are really close, with just a percent more preferring the smaller rumored panels.

One more thing – our own Galaxy Fold 7 Cover Screen vs Main Screen battery testings reveal interesting stuff.
On the Galaxy Z Fold 7 , using the outer screen instead of the main inner display can extend battery life by around 10% on average. Video playback showed up to 17% savings, while web browsing saw a smaller difference of about 5%. Overall, the inner screen is surprisingly efficient, though the cover display still offers a slight edge in power consumption. Apple shouldn't be scared of big(ger) screens: if Samsung can pull it off, so can Cupertino… right?
Image credit – PhoneArena We don't need just another foldable – we need a better one. And a cheaper one. But that certainly won't be Apple's (price tag-wise).If Apple delivers on the quality front, Samsung will have no choice but to raise its game again. And honestly, that's the kind of rivalry we live for. Apple is very late, but it could be the case that it doesn't just join the party – it'll try to take over the whole room. Will it be able to do with a smaller foldable? It's not out of the question. I know that anything less than 8 inches (for a book style foldable, not a Flip style clamshell) is too small for me.
So let them compete, throw subtle shade, and flex specs. All we care about is getting foldables that are thinner, stronger, last longer, and maybe – just maybe – don't cost the same as a used car. Although the used cars market is bonkers as of late, but enough with the gloomy remarks. Life is good. Go get yourself a cool drink and stay hydrated. And start saving for a foldable. They're great.

iPhone 17 Pro may flaunt a feature that once made Samsung Galaxy phones stand out

The Galaxy S23 Ultra was Samsung's last flagship phone to feature a 10x telephoto camera. It has been replaced with a 5x sensor, and many are still not over long-range lenses which let them take incredible photos at a distance. While the Galaxy S26 Ultra is unlikely to fill that void, the Apple iPhone 17 Pro might step up to the plate, according to a new anonymous source has tipped MacRumors off about several iPhone 17 Pro specs. The leaker seems to know about an ad being shot for the iPhone 17 Pro by the Slovenian company Division Film. While Division Film's does indeed list Apple as one of its clients, MacRumors didn't independently verify the claim. The leaker claims that the iPhone 17 Pro will flaunt a new telephoto lens with up to 8x optical zoom, up from 5x on the iPhone 16 Pro. The lens will apparently have a moving element, which will allow for continuous optical zoom at various focal lengths. The iPhone 17 Pro may copy Sony Xperia's continuous optical zoom feature. | Image Credit - Sony Xperia" The tipster also says that the iPhone 17 Pro will come with an all-new pro camera app for both images and videos. It will rival the likes of Halide, Kino, and Filmic Pro, all of which offer a professional experience. There's also a chance that Apple will overhaul its Final Cut Camera app instead of building a new app. It's not known whether the new (or updated) app is going to be exclusive to the Pro models. Lastly, they also assert that the iPhone 17 Pro will have another Camera Control button on the top edge to make it easier for users to access the camera. The leaker also corroborated some earlier rumors, such as a new copper-ish shade for the iPhone 17 Pro and a repositioned Apple logo. The iPhone 17 Pro is rumored to have a horizontal camera bar, and a 48MP sensor is expected to replace the 12MP telephoto camera, making for a triple 48MP camera array. Earlier rumors have also pointed to video shooting upgrades such as the ability to use both the front and back cameras at the same time for recording clips. Thus, it does seem plausible that Apple will double-down on the camera-centric changes by introducing a higher-zoom range. This could also help it win over the Samsung users who don't find a 5x telephoto camera good enough for far-away subjects. And since it will be a moving lens, users probably won't miss out on a lower zoom level since the device should be able to optically achieve two levels of zoom. This is a trick that Sony's top smartphones also employ. Not only will Apple be going after the users of standalone cameras with this move, but it will also be courting Samsung and Sony users by launching the feature.

Deals: Samsung Galaxy Z foldables now available, S25 Ultra and S25 Edge discounted

The wait is over, Samsung's next generation of foldables is now available. That means the end of the pre-order perks, but you can still get some extras. Right now, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 are available with $200 Amazon Gift Cards (no more free storage upgrade, though). We have a detailed review if you want to do a deep dive before committing. If you decide to get one, you may want to also grab a case to protect your shiny new foldable. The Z Fold7 case no longer holds an S Pen (remember: support was removed), but it does have a grip. It's available in transparent and gray. The Z Flip7 cases offer a stylish leather option (Kindsuit) or a more playful look (Flip Suit). Of course, this year Samsung offers the more affordable Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 FE, which starts at $200 less than the premium Z Flip7, though this is with less memory. Also note that the Amazon Gift Card is only $100, which closes the gap between the two models even further. It has exactly zero discount at the moment, but the Motorola Razr 2025 is still $260 cheaper than the FE (if we look at the 256GB models). The chipset has noticeably less performance, but Motorola was ahead of the curve on cover screen size (3.6' vs. 3.4') and battery capacity (4,500mAh vs. 4,000mAh), so the vanilla Razr is worth a look if you are considering the Z Flip7 FE. Just maybe wait a week or two for discounts to come back. Motorola Razr 2025 Read our review 8/256GB - $700 at Amazon US By the way, the Samsung Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch8 Classic also went on open sale this week. The vanilla model is the thinnest Galaxy Watch yet and comes in two sizes (40mm and 44mm) with and without 4G. The Watch8 Classic is still the only option for a rotating bezel – this one comes only in one size (46mm), but you do get a choice between 4G and Bluetooth. Note: the Watch8 is $50 off, but you need to grab the discount code. The Classic has a $100 Gift Card attached to it instead. Putting foldables and watches aside, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra is still the best camera phone from Samsung this year and the only new phone with S Pen support. And it is currently running a solid discount. The slim and light Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is cheaper than the Ultra, but aside from physical dimensions, it doesn't compare favorably to it. Still, a display of this size is impossible to find on a phone this light anywhere else. For a cheaper option, the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE is back on sale. But wait – did you hear that the Samsung Galaxy A56 is finally available in the US after an inexplicably long delay? You can get a $50 discount with a coupon, which is the only thing keeping it in the game – even with that discount, the S24 FE may be the better value for money. The A56 also has the Motorola Edge (2025) to worry about. This phone has a good quality 6.7' 10-bit 1220p+ OLED display, an IP69 rating a 50+10+50MP camera with a 3x telephoto and a high-resolution ultra-wide and a 5,200mAh battery with both fast wired charging (68W) and wireless too (15W). Motorola Edge (2025) $110 off 8/256GB - $440 at Amazon US Finally, the Nothing Phone (3) still offers a free storage upgrade from 12/256GB to 16/512GB. Have you gotten used to its kooky look yet? We may get a commission from qualifying sales.
